Reddit Was Fun

Sadness. Joey stopped working today
I'd been using the Joey app to keep tabs on a few subreddits I'm fond of. It finally stopped working today.

Been on Lemmy since day -5 of the API fiasco. Was excited to recognize the unnecessary inventions guy while scrolling, only to be super disappointed when I realized it was a TikTok ad! ☹️

One thing I don't miss about Reddit is how dependence on automod made it literally unusable for new accounts
On Reddit if you have a new account that wasn't five years old and had over 9,000 upvotes you'd be de-facto banned from 90% of all subreddits by AutoModerator removing everything you posted. Even then if you didn't use proper bracketing or whatever you'd get removed as well.
Part of me thinks this was intentional to get people attached to their accounts that conveniently had their life stories, writing styles, beliefs, likes and dislikes all in one place.

Reddit Account Manager: a free tool to help you migrate to Lemmy by offloading your Reddit accounts, bookmarks, and subscriptions
cross-posted from: https://lemmy.world/post/5935182
What is this product, and what does it do?
Reddit Account Manager allows you to keep track of all of your accounts, subreddit subscriptions, and bookmarks—all in one place.
How does this product help me?
Reddit Account Manager acts as a database repository for your Reddit accounts, so that if and when you decide to delete your Reddit account, you have your accounts, subscriptions, and bookmarks all in one place. With Reddit Account Manager, you'll:
- Know exactly when you created every account
- Know how much post/comment karma each account has
- Know when it's time to delete an account
- Have all your subscriptions mapped out and ready to go for the next account you create
- Save all your bookmarks, even if your accounts are long gone
- Know when an account is active, deleted, or not created yet
Why did you build this product?
Despite many Redditors' desires to delete their account and start a new one, many refrain from doing so for multiple reasons. Reasons include (but are not limited to):
- Losing track of the subreddits they're subscribed to
- Losing bookmarks
- Lack of data export functionality from Reddit
- Time and effort in switching (and ditching) accounts
Why have multiple Reddit accounts, and why would I want to delete them periodically?
All of your Reddit activity is public. Over time, you become increasingly identifiable. By having multiple Reddit accounts designated to specific subreddits/interests, and deleting them after some time, you:
- Maintain pseudo-anonymity
- Subscribe to different subreddits across different accounts
- Keep a low profile and mix up data
Which platform do I need to use Reddit Account Manager?
You can use it out-of-the-box with any the following:
- Airtable
- Baserow
- Notion
- Coda
- ClickUp
Can I use this to store or migrate my Reddit data now that Reddit has killed third-party apps?
Absolutely, yep. You can (and should) use it however it works best for you.
Why did you make it free?
We all deserve privacy and to not be tracked all over the web. I knew this could bring value to every single Reddit user who wants to delete their account, start a new one, or simply keep track of everything you want to, so that if you ever do want to destroy your account, you'll be able to without worrying about losing track of it all.
And Reddit's recent decisions, Reddit Account Manager serves as a great tool to export your data and take it with you wherever you go next.

Reddit's official TikTok account hypocritically showing off MSOutlookit
www.tiktok.com Reddit on TikTokEverybody is so creative! Search “pcottle github msoutlook” to check it ou. #reddit #github #workhack
MSOutlookit is a "skin" for Reddit that makes it look like Outlook. In case the joke isn't clear it makes it easier to hide Reddit browsing at work from folks looking over your shoulder. http://pcottle.github.io/MSOutlookit/
It's just super disheartening to see Reddit themselves show this off after killing third party apps.

webapp for reddit to continue to lurk - for subs that do not yet have alternatives on lemmy.

Geddit is the shit for lurkers
As a 12 yr Reddit lurker, Geddit fits all my needs. It sidesteps the api using rss feeds and other technical stuff I don't know about. You can view posts and comments. Favorite subreddits. But can't post/comment/vote. I'm trying my hand at engaging more on lemmy, but for more content, Geddit is perfect for me.

I miss rif
I used to browse reddit on rif for years before the official app even released. The official app is like "can I have a reddit, mom?" - "we have reddit at home" Reddit at home: takes an eternity to load even if it's a text post, keeps recommending me stuff I didn't sub to, full of ads, screen is filled with full sized images so it takes a lot longer to see posts that I'm willing to click on...
I miss rif. I used to lurk and look at memes on rif all the time, occasionally asking for advice on relationships or jobs or whatnot. I'm considering quitting reddit altogether, just found out about Lemmy. Is there a lotr memes or prequel memes community over here?

I made a tool that transfers your reddit subscriptions to lemmy
github.com GitHub - induna-crewneck/Reddit-Lemmy-Migrator: Python script to transfer subreddit subscriptions to LemmyPython script to transfer subreddit subscriptions to Lemmy - GitHub - induna-crewneck/Reddit-Lemmy-Migrator: Python script to transfer subreddit subscriptions to Lemmy
One thing that annoyed me about moving to Lemmy was that I'd lose my subreddits and that looking for and joining communities on Lemmy would be tedious. So (logically) I spent 2 days writing a script, that gets a list of your subreddits from your reddit account and looks for communities with the same name on Lemmy. It also joins those communites. So all you have to do is download, enter your credentials and you're done.

10 year Club, Multiple Awards, 17k / 24k gone....
I never really cared about upvotes and downvotes, but I liked that my comments and participation meant something to someone at one time or another. I liked that when I posted a comment or asked a question people could look through my post history to learn more about me and answer accordingly. More than anything I miss my saved posts and comments and enjoyed going back to read through what was important or funny to me at a particular moment in time. I don't have close friends or any family that lives within 1,000 miles so the connections I made through Reddit meant something.
I'm grieving.

Should I reopen my blacked out subreddit?
I ran a NSFW subreddit that had ~150k people before I took it private. I’m pretty well into fully switching to Lemmy at this point and I haven’t been back over there since.
Do you think it’s better to reopen the subreddit and just not actively moderate or better to keep it dark?
-
Reddit was once an enjoyable experience but...
The toxicity became too much to bear. I couldn't go a post or a comment anymore without someone wanting to give me a hard time for it. Downvote brigading, using antagonizing logic to try and bait for responses that they want. The users digging into your post history to bring up things that have nothing to do with, with what you bothered replying to them in the first place.
I don't know who to blame, what to blame and when it happened. But, Reddit has long lost it's status as being an open forum to peacefully and civilly talk anything in without someone getting way too entangled with their own self-importance and how their opinions have to be seen as some form of law to be obeyed by.
-
Ok, now I'm finally done with Reddit.
Was still using it logged out for NSFW subreddits but they've finally blocked access via RiF. I guess I have a problem, had to browse certain subs every day, but you know what this may be cathartic. Now I have no reason to go to Reddit and will save myself some time. I also deleted my main account so can't discuss anything anyway. RIP.
-
Accidentally opened rif and it loaded. I'm still signed in.
It's working like normal. I'm guessing it won't work for long.

Sleeping habits disrupted
Anyone else having a hard time sleeping? My habit for the last 10 years or so was scrolling on RIF until I was ready to sleep. Now I'm navigating Lemmy, which I feel so-so about and it's not giving me the sleepy feelings. I just want to fall asleep! RIF, I miss you!

Does patching Rif allow you to use the app for free again?
As title says, I've read several guides across the internet but I still don't understand if you can use Rif again with 0 costs in money and if you can use all functions of Reddit is fun.
I also asked here how you could customize Reddit app and website home feed to make it look like Rif multi Reddit home feed but I got downvoted so I guess I understand it's not the best place to ask?
Please let me know what you think

You can post and vote with RIF again using ReVanced to patch the Client ID
I know there are still good reasons not to use or access reddit, but if you do and want to use RIF these instructions currently work.

NSFW subs still available on Reddit is Fun?
I heard that 5th of July that Reddit was blocking all access to NSFW if you aren't logged in, they're still open on RiF which is still functioning while logged out. Any clue what is going on or is Reddit just run by idiots?

Trying to learn how to use reddit desktop, how can I customize the main page to show the same subreddits rif showed?
Not sure if this is the right place to ask but I failed to get help elsewhere.
I've been using reddit is fun for almost a decade and now that is shut down, I'm trying to learn to use reddit desktop, witch it's not that bad.
So I remember my reddit is fun main/front page showed me hot and top posts for several subreddits, I remember: europe, todayilearned, todayifuckedup, oldschoolcool, gaming, funny, news, worldnews, pics, aww
I don't know if I customized it the first time I used rif, I can't remember. What I know is that going to reddit dot come front page and browsing "top" or "popular" posts shows me a lot of subreddits witch I'm not that interested about, like whitepeopletwitter and unexpected.
Does somebody know how can I customize the front page to show all those subreddits reddit is fun used to show me?
I've "Allow us to introduce recommended posts in your home feed" turned off already, turning it on only affects Best section IIRC, and it shows me subreddits where I posted, but not what rif showed me. When I go to hot or top posts it shows me a lot of subreddits I don't want to see...

- www.droid-life.com Goodbye, Good Reddit Apps
To kick off June, the world of 3rd party reddit apps was put on notice – prepare to pay by the end of the month or go away, they were essentially told. And well, it’s now June 30 and very few appear willing to pay. The end has come for some of the best reddit apps. For those catching up on this...

RIF can be patched to use your own OAuth client id and then used as normal
Not sure if people missed this post on this community earlier, but RIF can be patched so that it works the same as before: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/307734
Sure, the question of should you still be using Reddit after their horrible treatment of 3rd party devs is up to you, just wanted to let people know this was an option.
After I tried it, seems to work perfectly. The only thing I noticed is that imgur links won't work anymore, probably because the api keys RIF was using to pull from imgur are not valid after the OAuth client patch. Small price to pay to be able to keep using RIF though.
EDIT: @talklittle, if you are not okay with people patching your app, I can take this post down
