Is there a word, phrase, or trope for an idea that gets more popular the more it fails?
  • Sounds about right. This keeps happening at my job, executives throwing good money after bad in an attempt to get some return on their investment. If we had just cut our losses years ago we'd be in a much better place now.

  • Loadbalancing between 2 locations
  • Where would you host the script? If it's expected that the server that fires it off is always online and performing health checks, why not have it host a load-balancer? Or another local instance of the website? It's something fun to play around with, but if this is for anything beyond a fun exercise there are much better ways to accomplish this.

  • Loadbalancing between 2 locations
  • If you don't want to mess with another VPS you can use a global server load balancer (GSLB) provider like Akamai, Cloudflare, Azure, etc.

This being a self-host community though it's unlikely you'd want to pursue something like this, but without knowing more about your specific use case it's tough to make a recommendation.

If global high-availability is your primary goal then a hosted solution is probably best.

If this is just an exercise you and your friend are working on for giggles and it's not for a mission-critical Production instance, then presumably self-hosting a load-balancer on each of your servers that includes both nodes in a target group would achieve this, though somewhat counterintuitive; if the website goes down at either location, I would imagine there's a pretty high likelihood the LB itself would be down as well.

  • What is your pet peeve in 2024?
  • Google is so bad now and has been for a while, it's tough to believe its name is still synonymous with search.

I've been toying with the idea of using Kagi, but paying for a search engine is still such a foreign concept for me. I think if you can find a good SearXNG instance you'll have a much better time.

  • Elon's Death Machine (aka Tesla) Mows Down Deer at Full Speed , Keeps Going on "Autopilot"
  • Remember when they removed ultrasonic and radar sensors in favor of "Tesla Vision"? That decision demonstrably cost people their lives and yet older, proven tech continues to be eschewed in favor of the cutting edge new shiny.

I'm all for pushing the envelope when it comes to advancements in technology and AI in its many forms, but those of us that don't buy Teslas never signed up to volunteer our lives as training data for FSD.

    The Boogeyman (2023) | Discussion

As with most films I went into this completely blind and it turned out to be one of my favorites of 2023. While not super original, the acting is top notch, set design is phenomenal, and atmosphere is pretty unsettling at times.

Creepy monster design will make you check the closets tonight. Anyone with kids might find this one tough to watch in some parts.

Who here is making money 3D printing?

I am a hobbyist, and my job will probably never require me to design and print anything for work.

I do really enjoy the process of conceptualizing, designing, and printing, and have done so for myself and some close acquaintances.

I've spent many hours/days learning the tools of the trade and was wondering if there was an opportunity to make some money as a side gig. Has anyone been successful doing this, and how did you go about it?

Here are a couple of my early designs, I plan to upload more once I clean things up a bit.
