  • I live in Canada, so I'm obviously biased in the sense that we're one of the countries most affected by US politics, what with them being our largest trade partner and having a massive land border with them.

That being said, are you unaware of the global rise in right-wing extremism and fascism following the 2016 election? The US is the richest country in the world, with the largest military, and they also have a tremendous amount of soft power (at least in English-speaking countries) through their cultural influence in media exports.

I don't understand what you gain by pretending the US isn't a massive global power with huge influence over international relations.

  • Alberta seeks to block trans athletes from female competition but can't say how many will be impacted
  • Care to share sources for any of these claims?

I assume by "the trans athlete in swimming" you're referring to Lia Thomas. Here's an excerpt from her Wikipedia page:

In March 2022, Thomas became the first openly transgender athlete to win an NCAA Division I national championship in any sport after winning the women's 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:33.24; Olympic silver medalist Emma Weyant was second with a time 1.75 seconds behind Thomas.

1.75 seconds is hardly "30 seconds" as you claim. Note that this is the only event she won, no one seems to care that she also placed last in the 100 freestyle event, or that even in the event that she won she was over 9 seconds slower than the women's record for 500 yard-freestyle.

As for the MMA fighter, after a quick search I'll assume you're talking about Fallon Fox? It's true she did injure one of her opponents, Tamikka Brents. I don't know much about MMA, but seeing as it's a sport where people punch and kick each other violently, I'd assume injuries happen.

Let's assume she did have an advantage as a result of going through male puberty as a teen. Where do we draw the line in regulating biological advantage in sports?

Caster Semenya, a runner who was assigned female at birth and has lived her entire life as a woman, has higher levels of testosterone than the average cis woman. Should she be banned from competing?

Michael Phelps, a cis man with many Olympic medals in swimming, has an unusually large wingspan, double-jointed ankles, and produces around half the lactic acid of an average person, all of which gives him a biological advantage. Should we rescind his medals?

Why is "unfair biological advantage" in sports only brought up in the case of trans women (or in the case of Caster Selenga, gender non-conforming women who are mistakenly assumed to be trans?)

I'm sad for Green candidate Kevin Arseneau who lost his seat in Kent North, he was a very dynamic speaker in Fredericton.

I hope the remaining Green caucus pushes hard for electoral reform; the Lib majority tonight was won more off of Higg's failures than by the actual Liberal platform. As always in NB elections, we voted a government out rather than voting one in. I wish that would change, but it won't as long as we have first-past-the-post.

Don't pretend the CAQ (Coalition Avenir Québec) government is particularly concerned about secularism unless it pertains to religions other than Christianity. It was like pulling teeth trying to get la CAQ to remove the crucifix from l'Assemblée nationale, their argument being that it was a cultural and historical symbol, not at all religious! How do you reconciliate wanting to keep a cross in your legislature with loi 21's goals of eliminating the wear of personal religious symbols?

Note: the cross did get removed eventually after some pressure from QS (Québec Solidaire).

Separation of religion and state is something I am fervently in favour of, however I think going after public servants wearing a niqab as part of their personal beliefs while actively trying to keep a crucifix up in the legislature are the actions of a government motivated more by xenophobia and racism than by secularist ideals.

Air Canada's chatbot gave a B.C. man the wrong information. Now, the airline has to pay for the mistake

Jake Moffatt was booking a flight to Toronto and asked the bot about the airline's bereavement rates – reduced fares provided in the event someone needs to travel due to the death of an immediate family member.

Moffatt said he was told that these fares could be claimed retroactively by completing a refund application within 90 days of the date the ticket was issued, and submitted a screenshot of his conversation with the bot as evidence supporting this claim.

The airline refused the refund because it said its policy was that bereavement fare could not, in fact, be claimed retroactively.

Air Canada argued that it could not be held liable for information provided by the bot.

Pourtant, la SAAQ s’abstient de faire le changement pour les autres personnes qui ont formulé exactement la même demande.

Audio devices disappear after reboot (EndeavourOS, Pipewire)

Hello! I've posted this a few weeks ago on /c/[email protected] but I didn't get much of an answer, I hope it's okay to post it here as well.

I use 3 audio devices on my computer: my monitor's speakers (through HDMI), my headphones (through line-out/built-in audio) and my microphone (line-in/built-in audio). They all work fine, but when I reboot my headphones / line-out don't seem to get recognized at all.

The only solution I've found thus far is to re-install alsa-utils twice after rebooting. Upon the first reinstall, my line-out / headphones reappear but my line-in mic disappears, only to come back after the second reinstall. Technically my sound works perfectly fine after this, but it feels extremely dumb to reinstall a package twice after every reboot.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance :)

My audio device configuration disappears after boot-up

Hi there! For context, I'm on EndeavourOS using Pipewire.

So like the title says, my audio configuration works until I reboot my PC and then I need to fix it. I'm using both my CPU's internal audio (to power a microphone and headphones through 3.5mm audio jacks) as well as my GPU (to send audio to my monitor through HDMI). I never use the headphones and monitor speakers concurrently, I switch between them in the device manager as needed.

When I reboot, only my HDMI audio and microphone appear in my device manager. The only fix I've found so far is to sudo pacman -S alsa-utils, which makes my internal audio reappear but makes my microphone disappear. I then re-reinstall alsa-utils which makes the microphone reappear, giving me access to all three of my devices.

Anyone have any leads on how to permanently fix this? My system still works, but it feels really silly re-installing alsa-utils twice after every reboot.
