Raspberry Pi launches its IPO
  • I like your optimism best to look on the bright side and all— curious what do you mean by fabless? Do they not require as complex facilities because they’re a larger process or something? Or for some other reason?

  • Given the resources to accomplish it, what wildly impractical project would you finally pursue?
  • To be fair I could have range with the hella expensive batteries, considering that weight isn’t a consideration (truck made out of steel) you might consider including a basic two speed transmission to keep the motor rpm more in its efficiency sweet spot for highway vs city driving def cool project considered doing something like that with a large boat style car. Plus (and this might just be my justification) if you build it and battery technology progresses it would be a simple matter to swap out the batteries and increase range while keeping the rest of the stuff (modulo maybe charge control) the same

  • Why mock them? Our quotidian musings are seldom unique. When an individual arrives at a realization on their own, should we not celebrate it? Is it not our collective duty to foster and encourage critical thinking whenever the opportunity arises?

I think the students should definitely be compensated.

However, in this case, it seems like this was some sort of partnership in which the company sponsored the research. As a current engineering undergrad, I believe this success will translate into some really good job offers after university.

Secondly, given that it’s expected to be adapted by other products, while it doesn’t explicitly state what the patent is for, we can expect that the technology will be used by other devices, so it’s not just that single company that will benefit.

Thirdly, I certainly don’t see why the university would benefit directly, as generally published academic writings are meant to be available for public use (except from the perspective of the evil publishing companies).

So while I’m with you in spirit, and given the vagaries of the article, we should find the positives when negatives are lacking.

  • How long have you gone without being in a romantic relationship?
  • Never really been single; I’ve been with my now husband since I was 15 (now 23). So I dunno goals from back then were nebulous, but generally revolved around becoming rich so that I could figure out what I actually wanted to do with my life without closing too many doors.

Back then I think I imagined college as more of a growth experience since I thought I would be living in dorms; but living at my parents in law’s house has been good too since I’ve learned a lot from them in terms of finances and they’ve taken me camping and backpacking a lot which is something I’ve always wanted to do.

At the end of the day I have someone that I love and who loves me and that’s all that matters. You might have to compromise more I guess as long as your mostly aligned you learn that the little things don’t matter too much. I’m happy I’m out from under my parents control (they sucked) which is nice too.

  • How do short-term thinking business types infiltrate technology companies?

I feel like it’s a common script that most good companies eventually fall to short term focused management types who are happy to shred the company as long as they get their golden parachute.

Why does this seem to be the case? If you wanted to build a company that was more immune to this sort of thing how would you go about it? Examples and counter examples of these sorts of companies would be awesome to hear about.

Ukraine was in trouble already — now it openly admits it's on track to lose
  • Well it eventually becomes difficult in the long term. I doubt the sanctions would be resolved any time soon but at a certain point unless your willing to go to war— which if we weren’t willing to supply probably won’t happen— you should eventually normalize relations once everyone who was involved in the war is dead.

  • Sorry for the low quality post but nonetheless need some advice
  • Get the cheap house then go out and do things experiences are worth their weight in gold. Plus if the other large house is in the burbs as many expensive ones are it will be hard to walk anywhere anyway so just invite people over and when you pay it off you can make it a cheap air bnb if you want.

  • A biased test kept thousands of Black people from getting a kidney transplant. It's finally changing
  • Thank you for the information! It was not my intent to echo any such refrain. If you don’t mind, would you point me to some good survey papers which might expand my understanding of the topic? (physiology and human phenotypes?) May not be the right terminology for apparent race but I’ll lean on your expertise to interpret my meaning.

  • A biased test kept thousands of Black people from getting a kidney transplant. It's finally changing
  • (I should preface this with the fact that I only really skimmed the aamc article you linked)

I think we have a serious bias problem in medicine. However, the right answer might be to fund studies that debunk the racist claims pervading the education system, rather than relying solely on stricter policies.

It seems to me that we want individualized medicine. Discounting race, different people may respond differently to various treatments; for example, I have really long tooth roots. Therefore, we should develop tests to identify these differences and tailor treatment accordingly. I understand the fear of research that could possibly establish differences in treatment across racial lines due to historical context. However, I would tentatively suggest that if one truly believes race is an ineffective descriptor for such distinctions, then one should expect that studies would more likely aid than hinder the effort to address racial disparities in medical treatment and outcomes.

  • 'Oppenheimer' finally premieres in Japan to mixed reactions and high emotions
  • I see what you’re saying. I will not speak of the American decision to drop the atomic bomb as I feel there are a mess of competing interests and parties involved, and I don’t know what to believe, ie: avoiding the death toll of invasion, showing the soviets the power of the atomic bomb, ending the war before the soviets could aid and therefore influence the aftermath of an invasion, etc. However for the sake of argument let’s say that it was done in a utilitarian fashion to reduce the overall death toll. If this is the case then I think we can say it was justified, while also acknowledging the horror of it.

To your second point, I think it is good to differentiate between the people and the government. The government should apologize full stop. However for those interviewed in the article, especially for those who were kids at the time, I imagine the horror of the bomb is a lot closer to them, also given they were coming out of movie about said bombs production.

Yet, I don’t know if there exists a general consensus in the Japanese population about the atrocities committed by their military during the war. I would imagine they know some of it given that Japan is a westernized country with the free press, yet often times past wrongs are left out of public school curriculum. Especially when like in the case of the Unit 731 the United States was very interested in their results initially.

On the one side I really like c and c++ because they’re fun and have great performance; they don’t feel like your fighting the language and let me feel sort of creative in the way I do things(compared with something like Rust or Swift).

On the other hand, when weighing one’s feelings against the common good, I guess it’s not really a contest. Plus I suspect a lot of my annoyance with languages like rust stems from not being as familiar with the paradigm. What do you all think?

How long are sporellated mushrooms good to harvest?

I recently left for a trip(the non mushroom kind) for 9 days, leaving my mono-tub with no visible pins. When I returned I found that many fruited (golden teacher) mushrooms had deposited large quantities of black spores all over the container. I picked them, where upon they felt of normal firmness, and dehydrated them on the day of my return.

I suspect I don’t have anything to worry about, as I don’t see any signs of contamination. However, as this is only my second flush on my first grow, I’m hoping someone more experienced here might lend me their advice on the matter.

    Thanks!
