  • I naively walked into Lemmy thinking it might be a friendlier respite from the echo chamber that is Reddit. I was wrong. From everything I've seen, it's just a more concentrated pit, where all people want to hear are their opinions repeated, plugging their senses from anything contrary.

I also wanted/hoped this would be a place where people wouldn't get downvoted and cast away just for stating different opinions. Nope. It's the same old emphasized emotional outrage, where you can't even offer a different take without a virtual lynching.

I don't want to see that from the left or right. Civility would be nice for a change...

Edit: I see the downvotes are starting. I guess I can soon expect to be attacked by weak expletive rage because my colors don't match the hive.

  • [x-post] - Hobbies have been killed by money making side hustles
  • My brain does the same thing, but I'm trying to 're'learn how to just enjoy hobbies without having to push them to their maximums.

I will say, though, that built in automation is a good idea for even the simplest of hobbies, so bots may be a good move for you. My fishroom is mostly automated at this point. It's nice not having to worry about every detail of care.

  • [x-post] - Hobbies have been killed by money making side hustles
  • I fell into this trap with one of my main hobbies.

I've always loved Aquariums and plants, and found my favorite niche in aquascaping planted aquariums. It gets expensive. I needed money to support my hobby and life. I sold a few extra plants and realized I could start making the hobby pay for itself. Everytime I sold something I'd add to the fishroom. I made ok money and eventually built an impressive aquarium collection.

I got a bit burnt out, realizing I was spending all my hobby energy on farming and selling, rather than creating aquascapes. My selling channels also mostly dried up, and I don't have the drive anymore to search for other markets.

Now I'm weighed down with a fishroom that I still keep running, but pay little attention to. Not sure what I should do with it.

I still sell occasionally, so if anyone wants any aquatic plants or shrimp, I have plenty...

  • Casa Bonita Workers Issue List Of Demands To 'South Park' Creators After No Tipping Policy Backfires
  • I used to wait tables. Made a couple dollars an hour plus tips, and it was a decent wage.

From that perspective, I get it, but I also can't stand that everyone demands tips these days. As a consumer, I'm far more inclined to visit a place with a no tip policy. In fact, I make it a point to not return to places that push their guilt trip tip iPads in my face before they've even performed a service. I have tipping fatigue and limited funds.

$30 does seem like a competitive wage there. Provided they get the hours to work, I'm sure many people would be happy with that pay. The protesting workers should probably seek work elsewhere instead of dictating terms this early in their employment.

  • Despite an attempt to make RFK a thing, the fact is he has no support among Dems
  • True, and that may be the wrong approach. But from what I gather, he would be incentivizing and subsidizing tech like renewables to make them more attractive to the market. He would also push more litigation towards bad actors.

I'm not convinced that anything else we're doing or any other plans we have are going to work, so I'm ok with trying a well-managed free market route.

  • Despite an attempt to make RFK a thing, the fact is he has no support among Dems
  • I don't align with either party, at all. I don't like any candidates, and question if I'll even bother voting.

If I do vote, I would have to determine how much the negatives weigh down positives from any candidate, and I'm not sure yet if RFK's BS runs too deep for me to stomach, compared to the few benefits he may offer. Those few benefits, though, are among my primary interests. At this point, he seems the best option to push for environmental protections and government transparency.

Is he a loon? Yes, but I firmly believe all of our candidates are severely psychologically imbalanced.

  • Google engineers want to introduce DRMs for web pages, making ad-blocking near-impossible in the browser
  • Thanks. Can't say I'm surprised..

Seems a necessary arrangement to keep Mozilla alive and Google on the throne. After reading that, I doubt it's possible for Firefox to ever get out from under Google's wing, but I can see Google eventually tossing Firefox from the nest. I guess that's how business works...

  • Hey, so there's a circus to your left, a carnival to your right, and a mall ahead, which way do you go?
  • If that's the case, I'm going to all 3. First the Roman circus to the left. Next, Mardi Gras in Rio de Janeiro. Then one of those massive middle Eastern malls like the one in Dubai or Iran. After a week or so of exploring all that, I'll head back behind me to my mansion to play with all my souvenirs.

  • Possibly a controversial opinion but I think we should have ads on Lemmy
  • I'd really prefer that to be a last resort. Instead, maybe there should be donation drives like Wikipedia, and rewards like Reddit.

I never once bought coins to hand out in Reddit, but might be convinced to here if I can trust where the funds go.
