'A king above the law': US Supreme Court's Trump ruling prompts judges to warn of 'nightmare scenarios'
  • So when Trump becomes president he can just throw all his political opponents in jail, right? It's a presidential action.

The USA just created a second Russia, China, North Korea, ...

Biden should take his balls in his hands and fire the republicans from office as an "official action to save the poor", get rid of the crooked supreme court justices as an "official action to restore balance", write a new constitution as an "official action to save the country from the brink of destruction", and just in general clean up the laws in the country as an "official action". No more gerrymandering, get rid of first past the post and the two party system, make the presidential election a direct vote instead of the bullshit electoral college, and so many other things.

    Do it, you fucking coward.

  • Answered: Is there such a thing as "overqualified"?
  • A PhD can get a much higher paying (and likely less physically difficult) job than fast food.

That maybe be true, but they may be trying a different career, or unable to find a job in their field because of oversaturation, or whatever other reason.

The unspoken assumption when someone is "overqualified" is that they will take a better job if the opportunity presents itself.

Isn't that everybody though? If a cashier in fastfood got an opportunity to become a highly-paid streamer, they'd quit their fastfood job immediately too. But I do get your point: better credentials mean better job chances, mean greater likelihood of moving a job that's paid better.

  • Answered: Is there such a thing as "overqualified"?

Or is it just a term made up to find an easier reason to reject job applicants?

    ---------

So it looks like the consensus is "overqualified" is a euphemism for

    • "I'm afraid you'll leave this job because I'm assuming you'll have better chances elsewhere" aka "you won't accept being my slave forever due to lack of opportunities"
    • "I'm afraid you might actually understand how shitty it is here and want to improve things. can't have that"
    • "I don't want to figure out how much to pay you when you know your worth"
    • "You cost too much"
    • "I have other reasons, but won't say them"

French authorities accused of ‘social cleansing’ of migrants and homeless before Paris Olympics
  • "migrants" 🙄 anybody coming from outside of France is a migrant. Are they removing Germans, Italians, Romanians, Spaniards and others from Paris?

They mean refugees. From countries we the West fucked up and continue to plunder. People fleeing those dire situations. And people from war zones too. They are seeking refuge! A person from Belgium isn't seeking refuge in Paris...

I'd love to see them rehouse Belgians, Swiss, and Brits. "GTFO, we don't want you here during the olympics".

  • Why don't low birth-rate countries make immigration to their country easier?
  • The screaming about low birth rate is because corporations want to keep a high labor pool so they can drive down the price of labor while keeping up demand for consumption.

It's not only that. By the time you want to retire, there won't be enough people to pay taxes for your retirement fund. With more young people than old, that is less of a problem.

  • South Korea is dying (but it has a plan) - CaspianReport
  • Historical population declines worse than the current ones like the Black Plague and WW2 have always resulted in a better world for everyone.

You do have to consider how those population declines happened though and in what state the world was in during and after. These countries with lower birthrates aren't war-torn countries or cesspits. Birthrates dropped because people could make a decision not to have children. They are more educated in general than the cases you stated and willingly (well, forced by economic pressure) making conscious decisions not to make babies.

When population goes back to 1950's levels, labor will be valued like it was in the 1950's, and the average person will once again have the wealth and leisure time to have a family.

    I like your optimism.

  • Tax the Rich - European Citizens' Initiative
  • I misread your comment. Apologies. Thought you saying right-wingers would tax the rich.

Yeah, Europe is just becoming an American colony. They didn't prepare their citizens for the internet and a reaping the stupidity rewards.

  • Why don't low birth-rate countries make immigration to their country easier?

Wouldn't they benefit from more people? Of course it would come with the condition of learning the language at an acceptable level and that being tied to residency.

Contactless wheel hub locking system could "set a new benchmark for e-bike security"
  • Also what happens when it runs out of power? Or the internet subscription runs out (I assume this requires a SIM card or eSIM wit ha subscription).

However, I do like the idea of locking the wheel rotation from within the wheel. Makes moving the bike without rolling it necessary, which means manually carrying it or plopping it into a vehicle.

    Is feddit.de working?

Sometimes I click on instances to check them out, but feddit.de has consistently been returning a 500 error however there are people posting from there. What kind of magic is this? Have the Germans figured out how to have a private instance that's somehow still connected to the fediverse?
