When someone makes a crude joke on the internet
  • I'll make the analogy more clear to you. In 1984 the government got absolute information control, thats what you guys are worried about. In Fahrenheit 451 people themselves censored everything that offended anyone, eventually leading to all the books being burnt.

People have opinions, and lemmy is becoming a worse echochamber than reddit.

  • When someone makes a crude joke on the internet
  • How about just deal with it? Internet is meant to be free space, that includes racists, bigots, rednecks, people you disagree with.

Lemmy is worried about 1984 but in actuality is becoming Fahrenheit 451.

  • Oppenheimer review I saw on my walk today.
  • I hate the fucking movie. Everyone is pretending for it to be a masterpiece but in reality its fucking boring. 95% of the movie is just dialog. They didn't even properly show how the bomb was built or the problems they encountered. But for some reason I should give a shit about his ex wife and his current alcoholic wife. Boring movie and I will never watch it again, a waste of time.

  • What should I know before welding flux core for automotive work?
  • Okay, yesterday I tried out MIG and here are the comparisons with stick welding:

    1. Mig doesn't leave much of slag at all, the residue you get is more in a "dust" form which is much easier to brush off compared to the slag stick welding leaves
    2. Much harder to get impurities into the weld itself
    3. Harder to follow the weld line compared to stick welding using pencil holding technique
    4. Have to play with the settings quite a bit before you get consistent line
    5. Much better for spot welding because you can position your hand and electrode, and press the trigger when you are ready, avoiding additional hand movement.
    6. Surprisingly the spatter is more aggressive and gets stuck to surface more than my electrodes. Could be due to the wire I am using

These are my notes so far.

What should I know before welding flux core for automotive work?

Been doing stick welding for a bit, but when it comes to thin steel such as on cars, sticks blow right through. I was thinking about getting a flux core machine to do some exhaust work on my car because I don't want to mess with gas.

What should I know about flux core? What are the biggest cons about it?

First room temperature and pressure superconductor discovered
  • The researchers and university are trustworthy, however this information is so new that others are still learning about. What is interesting is that the process isn't very complicated and if you have a vacuum furnace, you can potentialy replicate their results.

  • First room temperature and pressure superconductor discovered
  • 127c is the maximum operating temperature. If it goes above that, it looses superconductivity.

This material below 127c (which is insanely hot for superconductors) will be superconductive.

Operating range is -273c to 127c

Could aircooled engines make a comeback?
  • Doesn't mean we have to burn fossil fuels. Ethanol is cool as fuck. Less range but more power and you can make it with various methods.

As for bicycles, I cycled for many years and worked at a bicycle shop. Their "gearbox" design is horrible. Their durability is tragic. For commute I am using electric scooter now, much less reliability issues. I hate the tires on bicycles and scooters though, seriously need to get tubeless.

  • European muscle cars?

Are there any european cars that can be considered "muscle" ?

Could aircooled engines make a comeback?

ICE aren't growing much in size and are getting more and more efficient. Why not make them air cooled? Porches used to be aircooled, and those were performance cars with the engine in the back. I would imagine having an engine in the front might be easier to cool, no?

    Update on the turn lights

Changed the light bulbs into white LED's (they didn't have blue ones) and from orange they turned yellowish.

I think this might pass the inspection, thank you for suggestions ^^

Need to make part of my turn signal glow white

So on the integra the front turn signal is made oit of two bulbs, I need the one circled in red to be white to pass inspection in my country. The problem is the bulb itself is white, but there is an orange filter inside and I cannot remove it.

My idea was to put in a bright blue bulb in there to compensate for the orange filter and make it appear white. Is that doable? Has anyone tried?

    Do babies have memory?

Unsure if babies can form memories ages 1-2, my oldest memory is from around age 3. They do learn words when they are around 1 year old, so there must be some capacity for memory? What is going on there?

What to avoid when buying a battery?

My battery died (can't get above 10.5V, loosing voltage while sitting etc) and I need to get a new one. What should I look out for? There are a lot of different types of them like AGM, Lithium Iron, Flooded Acid etc

    Car is Integra (1998)

I am gathering all bolt rust proofing methods, if you know of any, please share!

So, since I am living in a country with lots of anow and salt, rust has always been an issue for me. I started researching how to rustproof the bolts, because there is nothing worse than a rust-welded grade 10.9 bolt that had its head snapped lol.

All steel bolt rust proofing methods I've seen are based on creating a layer between the steel and oxygen. But the way the layer is made varies wildly:

    1. Oxide based coat
    2. Carbon based coat
    3. Metal based coat
    4. Oil based coat
    5. Paint based coat

For example there is a technique that is called "Oil Burn" where you get the bolt red hot and dip it into motor oil. There are various issues with this technique, which I will explain in a later post.

With your suggestions I will make a spreadsheet with various pros and cons listed and will share with the community.

As to prove I am serious about this, here are my current experiments: Before: !

    After: !

Is it me or do images on lemmy.world appear highly compressed?

Images look blocky on my phone while using liftoff, I am unsure if everyone else is experiencing something similar

If you ask someone "why?" enough about a subject you don't agree on, eventually both of you will come to a conclusion

Many hold strong beliefs and opinions, however not many know the roots of their belief. If a person agrees to explore it, both of you will learn something new and fascinating. The problem is finding someone who wants to think and ask the questions. This goes for both. Many want to "convince" someone, but how much do you truly know about the thing you're trying to prove?

This also comes back to the "why?" game so many kids play. Parents get annoyed by it, but are they really annoyed at the game or their lack of knowledge depth? Play the game, find out how deep you lake of knowledge goes

Update on stuck rusty bolts: got all of them off!

My solution was: a lot of heat Used my propane torch and to protect brake lines, I covered them with my welders gloves, because I couldn't find any plumbers mats. Each bolt took around 5-10 minutes of constant heating and then serious impact gun action, but I got there :)

    9

How to heat up a bolt without damaging stuff around it

I am working on my integra's front suspension, but 3 bolts are rust welded. My impact gun managed to get one off, but the others wont budge. I hit them so much that the impact bit got too hot to the touch. Sprayed with penetrating fluid, hit it with a hammer etc.

My only other option is heat, but the problem is, that it's a wheel well and it traps heat, not to mention there is a brake hose which is very close to the area I will be heating.

How can I contain my propane torch heat to this specific bolt without damaging other areas?

3 cylinder engines are very unbalanced. Wouldn't making the middle cylinder bigger improve the balance of the engine?
