  • In case this is ever useful for someone to read:

It is OK to just put a child down and leave the room if you can't handle them for whatever reason. It doesn't make you a bad person. Just leave the room, get some space and call someone for help if you need it.

  • Register to vote for the General Election
  • For sure; that's why it pisses me off so much. At least with traditional bogeymen like Putin/Covid/inflation/Bin Laden etc it's a plausible 'other'. Trans people are UK citizens and we drink with them at the pub. It's literally an attack on our own cohort, to our own detriment.

  • Register to vote for the General Election
  • The UK is actually kind of libertarian in some aspects in autonomy around identity and right to be known to the government, etc

I've noticed that too. My uncle forgot about all of it in his twenties and heard nothing more until he was contacted about claiming his state pension a few years ago. It's not all bad I guess.

  • Register to vote for the General Election
  • I'm assuming this means vote against the Tories but please correct me if I'm wrong.

I have no dog in the fight with this topic but I will be voting against the Tories (in part at least) because they have sought to deflect attention from their failure and contempt for the public by using trans issues as a false enemy and decoy, massively wasting political resources and demonising my fellow countrymen/women/people for their own gain. Fuck em.

  • The May 2024 Organic Maps update with bookmarks and tracks sorting by name, better paved/unpaved paths colors, GPX import fixes, drive-through, and many other changes
  • Both are great but I find Organic better for searches and has a simpler UI (so a good replacement for google maps) but OsmAnd has more technical features and better for using offline, importing GPS tracks etc. I use Organic maps in the car and OsmAnd for hiking, cycling and sharing GPS coordinates.

  • A bit of a weird question: Can modern medicine be a threat to humanity long-term by greatly reducing effects of natural selection?
  • I would say that the greater the population (in part thanks to medicine) the greater the chances of beneficial mutations occurring and entering the collective gene pool. I see medicine as a safety net. I'm sure it's more complicated than that, but that's my professional take on it, as a musician.

  • Daughters and Fathers

This is a serious question, mostly addressed to the adult women among us but also to anyone else who has a stake in the matter.

What did your father do for you/not do for you, that you needed?

Context: I have recently become a father to a daughter, with a mother whose father was not around when she was growing up. I won't bore you all with the details but our daughter is here now and I am realising that I'm the only one in our little family who has really had a father before. But I have never been a girl. And I know that as a boy, my relationships with my mother and father were massively influential and powerful but at the same time radically different to each other. People say that daughters and fathers have a unique relationship too.

Question: What was your father to you? What matters the most when it comes to a father making his daughter loved, safe, confident and free? To live a good life as an adult?

I'd like this to be a mature, personal and real discussion about daughters and fathers, rather than a political thing, so I humbly ask to please speak from the heart and not the head on this one :)

    Thank you

P.S Apologies if this question is badly written or conceived; I haven't been getting enough sleep! It is what it is!

What is the most downvoted post you've seen on Lemmy?

Pretty much the title. Here is my best find so far. Really funny thread.

    What was made beautiful?

What did other people do in the past to make our world beautiful but which we do not notice now?

I am rural and I want to plant some trees and copses on my land, in particular places, with beauty in mind. It just occurred to me that others, who are long gone, may have done the same thing here in the past; planting a particular tree in its place only for its beauty. It may have outlived both themselves and their vision of what beauty is and I have not noticed it. Perhaps there are things around us which we thought were utilitarian, or even mistakes, but which were a choice made by someone with a subtler purpose than we give them credit for.

Have you ever noticed something in your surroundings and thought that it was done deliberately to be beautiful, and maybe you are the only person around now to have noticed it as such?

    Who Are Todays Heroes?

Who are the heroes of our time? Who is driving us to a better future? And who is inspiring and guiding us?

Anything goes: famous people, people in your own life, fictional people who represent something to your culture, groups of people working behind the scenes etc.

The only rule is they must be current.

    Automatic Playlist Generator: A Thing?

Is there such a thing as an automatic music playlist generator? Or even something that will play a similar track next?

I've been (re)building an offline music collection and sometimes I'm too lazy/uninspired to make a new playlist or I get tired of ones I've already made. At times like this I would like to be able to select a song and tell my computer to make me a playlist of similar tracks, or use it as the basis for a 'radio' mode, like I used to do once on a streaming service.

    Any pointers appreciated!

I'm able to use the command line and (laboriously) write primitive bash scripts. A GUI to take care of me would be ace tho ;)

Getting People Onto a Good Messaging App

Folks, I have finally figured it out.

    Have a baby.

Since having a baby a week ago, all of a sudden everyone is willing to install a decent messaging app in order to receive pics of the baby.

We explained that we weren't ready for images of our child to end up in the wrong hands via non-private apps. Another thing was telling them that the one single friend who had already got on board with this had already been recieving pics...

It's been a conversation starter for many and I think seeing privacy from the point of view of a newborn has helped our family and friends understand it a bit more easily. Plus they've had to put up with it if they want any photos, so they will see it working firsthand.

So, if you want to have a baby, know that it can be a wonderful opportunity to help loved ones communicate more privately.

It also increases the sum total of love, community and compassion in the world and in your own life but that's a conversation for another community :)

Edit: If anyone has good tips on how to share a little one's journey more privately with those that care about them, please post them in the discussion.

    Only Primary Comments

Does anyone know how I can see only the primary comments on a post on Lemmy, either in browser or (for bonus points) the Jerboa app?

I often click on a post only to get bogged down and sad with people arguing back and forth about each other's comments. I would like to just see the comments in direct response the post.

    Possible?

    Thanks!

    New Desktop Advice

I'm thinking about getting a desktop and am looking for some advice. The machine will primarily be for photography and digital art, music production/recording and, ideally, for experimenting with local AI. I would like to use only open source firmware and drivers if possible, as well as have a discrete GPU. If I can keep cost down by buying second-hand then that is fine! I currently use Debian on my laptop and would lean towards using that on the new computer, although KXStudio looks like it could be good for the music side of things. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated :)

Cronjobs: When First Connected to Internet

Hi folks, Does anyone know how to instruct cron to carry out a command when a connection to the internet is first made after boot? I have a few jobs that only need to be done once per day and require an internet connection e.g downloading the weather forecast and my rss feeds. I'm not always connected to the internet on boot and do not have the computer switched on at the same times every day. Many thanks for any suggestions.

I downloaded the latest development release of GIMP today to check out the effects layers and it's awesome! Such a happy day for me to edit non-destructively in GIMP! Really looking forward to the stable release :)

    Distributor of donations?

Does anyone know of a way to distribute donations to multiple open source projects at once? I would like to donate more frequently and broadly but because of the large number of different projects it would be laborious and inefficient to donate small fractions of what I can afford to each of them manually. What would be helpful is a distributor to whom I can say "These are all the people I want want to donate to and here is some money. Please distribute it to them on my behalf."

Does anything like this already exist?

Text tool stops working how I expect

Hi folks, can anyone help me figure out what's happening here with editing text?

Sometimes when I'm trying to change the font of text it stops working. I'm attaching an image to better illustrate the problem.

With text highlighted I go to change the font settings in the section circled in red but they do not actually change the font/update the settings outlined in blue. I cannot use the settings outlined in blue to select the font from a list, so I cannot use this as a workaround.

This problem doesn't always present itself and I suspect that I'm causing it myself but I just don't know how.

Any help would be much appreciated!

    Learning/playing sax on a budget

Hey guys, I'm thinking of trying out sax but I can't really afford to pay for lessons or buy an expensive new instrument. Can you recommend any video tutorials for beginners? And what might be a good option for a secondhand sax? Thanks :)

Light-hearted romance novels for my mother.

My mother has asked me to find her some romance novels. She wants something which isn't overly heavy or gnarly (i.e no violence or rape scenes). Just sweet fun romance. Can you recommend anything? Thanks!

    Hue-Saturation Question

Is it possible to manually select the colour to work on with Hue-saturation? Say for example I want to change the hue or saturation of an orange whilst leaving the majority of reds and yellows unaffected, how do I do this? In Hue-Saturation I can only choose from the preset colours (and Master). Or is there another tool that would accomplish this? Thanks
