What if the measurement device in the double slit experiment were a light year away?

In the famous double slit experiment, setting up a measurement device that watches which slit an electron passes through changes the eventual outcome on the screen, causing the wave function to collapse.

If the measurement device were a light year away and were precise enough to "zoom in" and see which slit the electrons went through, what would happen on the final screen?

Surely, if the measurement device were off, then the electrons would behave like waves and not particles. An interference pattern would appear on the final screen as there is no observer. On the other hand, if someone a light year away turned on the measurement device, this far-away person (and the measurement device) wouldn't know which slit the electrons went through until a year later. And, the electrons going through the slits wouldn't "know" they are being observed because no information (ie the measurement device turning on) can travel faster than the speed of light.

Youtube alternative solution
  • If I may offer a new way to think about things - YouTube ads support creators by allowing them to make a living making their videos. It's quite different than Facebook, Instagram, and Reddit, where a company is just hosting and monetizing people discussing and sharing things with each other. If you want to see good content, YouTube decentralized alternatives will really only take off if there is some sort of crowd funding going to creators. Which would most likely take the form of a subscription. And...that is essentially YouTube premium anyway. And I might add that I've had YouTube premium for years and it's my favorite subscription I have across the entire internet.

  • YSK: Buddy Icons can be set as your profile picture on Lemmy for that sweet, sweet nostalgia.

For example, on my profile picture. Find them on Coolbuddy or some other site and save as a webp.

  • The music in the credits was unbelievable (and the music throughout of course)

  • I would LOVE to see a feature film in that art style (at the end).

This is such a great all-around Zelda game and isn't a huge time commitment either. It's very linear but there's plenty of random mini games and shops to explore. It also is a very special and unique Nintendo game and incorporates an early looking version of Kirby and has chain chomps from Mario. The art direction is "toy style" and it's incredibly polished. It's really one of those remakes where they didn't cut any corners.

  • Wikipedia is amazing
  • Have you heard of Obsidian? It's basically a note-taking/journaling app that allows you to link entries to other entries similar to Wikipedia. Overtime you create a wiki of your mind and experiences. It's also free and saves your files in markdown.

  • This is not due to subscriptions - the same thing can be seen logged out. Additionally, communities you are not subscribed to show up in the home feed - you would need to block such communities to not see content from them. You could make the argument that one should really just browse communities you're interested in without viewing the home page, which is fair. However, take technology for example. There are many positive innovations that can be talked about. Instead - Right now, the posts in order, summarized in the same format as my post would be: 1. Corporation bad (ally bank). 2. global warming dystopia (Texas heat) 3. corporation bad (Netflix raising prices) 4. corporation bad (Elon Musk sued) 5. regular post 6. corporation bad (playstation store crap) 7. regular post 8 through 11 is corporation bad and AI dystopia news.

  • BOTW and TOTK are both 30 FPS - unless you played it on PC or Steamdeck emulated or something

  • Skyward Sword HD! The visuals and dungeons are so fun. Also, it turns out it's the only Zelda game that's HD and 60FPS. I hadn't realized this before. I really hope they remake other Zeldas.

  • This is aging incredibly well.
  • I might be pretty ignorant here but what is so proprietary about Twitter/Threads? It just lets people make public status updates and share photos. Unless they literally used the same lines of code, how is it infringement and trade secrets?

  • I have been using Reddit's direct video links lmao

  • People don't seem to realize how much power users have over their platform (Reddit)
  • I created one of the "big subs" on Reddit, and have felt particularly frustrated that whether I protest or don't, I will still get angry messages from both mods and users either way. Which makes the whole "you're not even paid for this" hit much harder. But here I am on Lemmy with a username different than my Reddit account breathing fresh internet air where no anonymous strangers yell at me

What if we replaced Captchas with tiny flash games requiring a specific score?

Just a 15 second game like Snake or Helicopter. Should stop a significant level of bots, no?

So do Lemmit bot posts show up in "All" section of different servers?

If Lemmit is federated, doesn't that mean that all of its crossposts of reddit content should show up in everyone's "All" feed (for example, on Lemmy.world)?

Why does Lemmy feel so fresh compared to Reddit?

As a long time Reddit user, there's something about Lemmy and the fediverse that feels really refreshing and new. I think it has to do with a few things...

    1. People are more respectful of each other and interested in discussion and being social.
    2. Less trolls (users are probably older?)
    3. Due to it not being absolutely huge, I feel like people will actually see my posts and comments instead of being lost in a sea of content. I suppose once Lemmy grows this will change, however the cool thing about the fediverse are the new servers. So you can stick to the server when you want smaller community discussion and go to "all" when you want more populated threads.
    4. The clean UI feels refreshing and clean, almost like the early internet.

What have you noticed? Do you find it refreshing too?
