What happened to 'tags' in the bookmarks?
I am unsure if this happened with the new update or if I noticed it only now, but I cannot add any tags while bookmarking a page from the star icon in the address bar. The whole 'tags' field as shown in the image is completely absent now when bookmarking in that way.
The only way to add/edit tags seems to be through the bookmark manager.
Is this a new feature or I simply realized it now?
Edit: if it's not a new feature, does anyone by any chance remember which version of Firefox last had that tags field?
#Firefox doesn't need any new features to be more attractive for users, it just needs to make CSS theming more accessible

Bypass short links
I use Firefox on Android 11 and Windows 11. What's the best way to bypass short links and sites that make us await a certain period of time (say, 10 seconds) before proceeding? Is it Violentmonkey + Bypass all shortlinks (debloated)?
What are specific examples of Google shaping web standards, especially ones that require browser support?
It's no secret that Google has a very large influence. They have influenced web pages into being highly optimized for high search engine rankings, and have pushed AMP: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/07/googles-amp-canonical-web-and-importance-web-standards-0. However I haven't found any concrete examples of Google pushing web standards that have been adopted and require browser support. I've read comments here and there like this one, that the Shadow DOM was created and pushed by Google, perhaps to make it harder to block ads, but didn't find any sources on that.
Any ways to edit Firefox tabs and bookmarks like Vim / Oil.nvim?
Vim's modal editing system is very efficient for manipulating text with little keystrokes. Let's say I had a list of URLs like the ones below, representing tabs. I could have the list as a text file, navigate them with arrow keys to move a text cursor, press enter
or another key to focus on the tab under the cursor, d
to cut a link (like cutting a file in a file explorer, or like how d
deletes or cuts text in Vim), and p
to put it in another position where the cursor is. I could select multiple lines to do d
or p
, or press y
to yank (copy) them to my clipboard.
startpage.com reddit.com/r/firefox lemmy.ml/c/firefox
Oil.nvim seems to be a good point of reference for this. Its a Neovim plugin that acts as a file explorer, where all the files are text listed in a vim buffer, and you can do d
y
or p
. I did a bunch of searches to see if Vimium Tridactyl or Surfing Keys can do this and nothing showed up. If they can, then an explanation would be helpful.
People should stop mentioning Firefox Google deal when they defend Firefox against their advertising investments.
If Google stopped supporting Firefox today, Bing would still pay to be the default engine. If bing does not pay, Yandex would do.
My point here is Firefox still has 2.71% market share, a lot of search engines operators would pay Firefox good money to be their default engine.
The default search revenue stream is guaranteed as long as they have good amount of users.
But they actively choose to ruin it.
Mozilla encourages Gavin Newsom to veto popular AI regulation bill
Context
Senate Bill (SB) 1047 is legislation proposed by Senator Scott Wiener for regulating AI models that cost over $100 million to train. The bill was designed to hold AI companies accountable for potential damages caused by their models.
It gained widespread support from the population of California and a broad coalition of labor unions, AI safety advocates, Hollywood figures, and current and ex-employees of AI megacorporations.
However, many giant corporations including Google, Amazon, Meta, and OpenAI opposed the bill, asking Gavin Newsom to veto it.
Mozilla's statement
On August 29, Mozilla joined the corporations to endorse a veto, publishing its own statement:
>Mozilla is a champion for both openness and trustworthiness in AI, and we are deeply >concerned that SB 1047 would imperil both of those objectives. For over 25 years, Mozilla has >fought Big Tech to make the Internet better, creating an open source browser that challenged >incumbents and raised the bar on privacy, security, and functionality for everyone in line with our manifesto. > >Today, we see parallels to the early Internet in the AI ecosystem, which has also become >increasingly closed and consolidated in the hands of a few large, tech companies. >We are concerned that SB 1047 would further this trend, harming the open-source community and >making AI less safe — not more. > >Mozilla has engaged with Senator Wiener's team on the legislation; we appreciate the Senator’s >collaboration, along with many of the positive changes made throughout the legislative process. >However, we continue to be concerned about key provisions likely to have serious >repercussions. For instance, provisions like those that grant the Board of Frontier Models >oversight of computing thresholds without statutory requirements for updating thresholds as AI proves safe will likely harm the open-source AI community and the startups, small businesses, >researchers, and academic communities that utilize open-source AI. > >As the bill heads to the Governor’s desk, we ask that Governor Newsom consider the serious >harm this bill may do to the open source ecosystem and pursue alternatives that address >concrete AI risks to ensure a better AI future for all.

Gavin Newsom vetoed this bill on September 29th.

Mozilla removes uBlock Origin Lite from Addon store. Developer stops developing Lite for Firefox; "it's worrisome what could happen to uBO in the future."
Mozilla recently removed every version of uBlock Origin Lite from their add-on store except for the oldest version.
Mozilla says a manual review flagged these issues:
> Consent, specifically Nonexistent: For add-ons that collect or transmit user data, the user must be informed... > > Your add-on contains minified, concatenated or otherwise machine-generated code. You need to provide the original sources...
uBlock Origin's developer gorhill refutes this with linked evidence.
> Contrary to what these emails suggest, the source code files highlighted in the email: > > * Have nothing to do with data collection, there is no such thing anywhere in uBOL > * There is no minified code in uBOL, and certainly none in the supposed faulty files
Even for people who did not prefer this add-on, the removal could have a chilling effect on uBlock Origin itself.
> Incidentally, all the files reported as having issues are exactly the same files being used in uBO for years, and have been used in uBOL as well for over a year with no modification. Given this, it's worrisome what could happen to uBO in the future.
And gorhill notes uBO Lite had a purpose on Firefox, especially on mobile devices:
> [T]here were people who preferred the Lite approach of uBOL, which was designed from the ground up to be an efficient suspendable extension, thus a good match for Firefox for Android.
New releases of uBO Lite do not have a Firefox extension; the last version of this coincides with gorhill's message. The Firefox addon page for uBO Lite is also gone.

Throwback: 2019 Mozilla-affiliated group asks how to build a queerer CreepAI: a "non-committal sexting bot" emerges.
This session is facilitated by Emily Martinez, Ben Lerchin Show on schedule About this session Come interact with the first iteration of Queer AI, a conversational chatbot trained on queer literature. The bot currently engages in a variety of conversations around intimacy and relationships, but we...
On Valentine's Day 2024, Mozilla came out with a piece critical of AI chatbots titled "Creepy.exe: Mozilla Urges Public to Swipe Left on Romantic AI Chatbots Due to Major Privacy Red Flags."
But before they found red flags, back in 2019, Mozilla promoted a workshop on a creepy, rainbow-washed, chatbot ecosystem where people identified as "queer" were required to bare their most intimate sexual thoughts.
From the post:
> your... interactions will be recorded... you will occasionally be prompted with random survey questions
What kinds of questions did they randomly ask the people who would "queer the AI"? Creepy stuff like
> Have you ever sexted with a stranger? > Have you ever sexted with a machine? > Do you remember the first time you were aroused by language? > Do you think an artificial intelligence could help fulfill some of these... needs?
The workshop providers guided people into establishing an intimate, sexual connection with the chatbot they could create.
> How might we build trust with an AI? > How might we give it its own sense of desire?
Even the consenting participants in the workshop complained about the AI's creep factor:
> it feels like the A.I. is gas-lighting you. > Seems like a noncommittal sexting bot. It should at least be clear about what it’s trying to do.
The startup that Mozilla fostered for this panel ended up crashing and burning, but its creepier, worse brethren live on inside of Firefox 130, displayed as first-class options within Mozilla's chatbot options. I just thought it would be fun to take a trip down memory lane to see how many creepy red flags AI companies could get within Mozilla's view without ever concerning them.
The poll is over, and the result is clear:
The poll is over, and the result is clear:
\#FireFox users have very little interest for Chatbot integration into their browser.
I am very much aware that the people, who voted in this poll are hardly a representative sample, but more than 2.4K people is a better size than many "professional" opinion polls.
@mozilla & @firefox should take people, who actually care about their #browser choice, seriously.
I still seriously believe that #Mozilla's fate matters,

There's also another API that you can actually use if you're a developer in Browser Toolbox, enable Browser Toolbox
and type gBrowser.addTabGroup
, you can add tabs to group using this API, and if you find a way to append it to Tab Tray you should be able to create something like this image:

How can I get access to my connect.mozilla.org account back?

Can't grant access to location
Hi all! I hope this is the right community for this, I have a rather strange issue with Firefox for Android, and I couldn't find any info on this particular bug(?).
For a while now (though I can't really put my finger on since when) I can't grant access in Firefox to location data. The small modal popup appears, but the button that should allow the use of my location just... doesn't do anything. I can press as many times as I want, but the dialog doesn't disappear, the button does not doing anything. I can see it gets pressed, but no effect.
But not always. Sometimes it works, but 90% of the time it won't. There are times when I can spam it till I die, other times the button gets pressed after a while, or after trying different angles to press the button. Yeah, I know, it sounds silly. And also, there are cases where it works right the first touch on the "Allow" button.
This feels even worse in Private Browsing session, tho I don't know is it technically worse, but it definitely feels worse.
I have the latest version of the browser that is available in the Play Store. Android version 14, running Samsung One UI 6.1.
Checking system settings lead to nowhere, it seems every relevant setting is OK, but I haven't changed anything around them in a good while.
As I said, I'm not sure whether a Firefox update or an Android/One UI system update caused this, or what else, it's like from one day to another, which makes it super weird.
Anyone having any idea? I haven't tried full data wipe on Firefox nor reinstalling it, I wouldn't really like to do that, but if there's nothing else, I may try that too.
Thank you guys and have a nice weekend ;)
Curious.
I keep a close eye on the job listings posted to Mozilla's job board. They don't post new job openings very often, so I always want to be tuned in when new listing pop up. All of a sudden, a lot of new job openings have appeared for a company that just laid off 36 people...

Yeah, !important
doesn't affect inheritance in any way. It only means that this particular rule is to be used if there are multiple rules that would set that particular property for the element in question (unless there's some other more specific rule with !important tag as well). MDN lists property inheritance in the formal definition section. You can totally make background-color inherited though - like *{ background-color: inherit }
(and then set the property to something else on the root element from which you would want to inherit from) but it would then either not apply if website set it to anything else for an element or override any other set value if you used !important
tag.
One other thing worth noting is that I would not recommend the rules mentioned for userChrome.css to be used as is - at least on Windows they completely break Firefox startup - it fails to display any window if you do that. Instead you should add a [sessionrestored]
selector to wait a bit before those rules are applied to main-window:
#main-window[sessionrestored], #tabbrowser-tabpanels{ background: transparent !important; }
If the problem doesn't come from an add-on, it's best to download Firefox from the Mozilla server for your system in your language and see if it's there. This version is then shielded from the other Firefox installation and is like a new installation of Firefox. Also you can then narrow down the problem and see if there is a problem with your current Firefox installation or if it is due to something else.
I have the tag function as in the picture in 132. Do you use any add-ons that have something to do with bookmarks? I couldn't find an option that affects this either. Not even in about:config.
I found 3 solutions, all of which have the same solution. You should enter a bookmark tag in the Bookmarks Manager so that this appears. It's probably a bug since Firefox 116. Solution 1, Solution 2, Solution 3.
Now it remains to be seen whether it will work for you.
Edit: Have linked solutions.

Reviving a long-dead thread for a relevant update, in a top-level post because you deleted all of your replies in the thread where it was relevant.
Mozilla did reply to my email asking for clarification on their Fakespot privacy policy, and whether they collect or sell user data, as we were discussing - though that reply took them four weeks. Their response in full:
""" Hello,
Thank you for contacting Mozilla and for your question. At this time, Fakespot does not sell or share any user data pursuant to any applicable privacy laws. The only data we share outside of Mozilla are generalized aggregated metrics with service providers who make Faksepot run to help us with logging and debugging issues to provide an uninterrupted experience for our customers, and we do not share this data for monetary gain. We are in the process of updating our privacy policy for additional clarity on all the points referenced in your email.
We trust this answers your questions and thank you again for reaching out.
Kind regards, Mozilla """
Same here. I have to trust/use an extension and third party desktop application (Progressive Web Apps for Firefox) to get this feature to work and not have to rely on Chrome/Edge/etc.
I can easily see less patient or understanding users dropping Firefox if they find out it doesn't work with Progressive Web Apps.
Honestly, I don't see why CSS theming is important. The customization is nice and all, but that's not going to make people switch to Firefox. There are many other things that could be improved, like adding tab grouping. I use this extension called Tree Style Tab which I cannot live without. Firefox having something like that by default instead of an extension would be nice.
However, having said that, OperaGX did find quite a lot of success by simply making it easy to theme the browser, so I can see where they are coming from.
There's Stylus
@RmDebArc_5 @firefox I believe they really need better tab organization (without the need for extensions). just basic tab grouping like chrome is a very important feature.

Part 1
I don’t have numbers that would directly address that. However, there are lots of statistics on the number of mobile users vs desktop users when it comes to the traffic in general. This trend has been clearly visible for about 15 years now.
Here’s something I found on a short notice. link
It's probably the nature of the change, too.
- It's easy to add a switch to disable the button.
- It doesn't cut into their bottom line.
- It's damn good PR.
Other stuff that people have been complaining about, like the massive backlash against baking in 3rd-party AI, won't make the cut.
Relatively benign things like tab grouping are challenging, so despite being much more popular, the easier-to-implement AI features were given a fast pass to Release versions of Firefox.
