I started figuring that Lemmy is starting to get some MAGA folks when the past few days, we've been seeing some "both sides are the same" posts hitting feeds.
If it makes you feel any better, as far as I can see from kbin (where votes are transparent) - I'm the only one who downvoted this post, and I did that because ableism is never ok, even if it is aimed at someone abhorrent.
It shouldn't, because bigotry is bigotry, but generally people don't seem to give a shit about ableism, so it probably will.. ¯\(ツ)/¯
I understood them to not so much mean stupid in the clinical sort of sense, but instead the proudly ignorant sort of stupid. I've met a ton of conservatives and most of trump supporting type is in a bubble and actively avoids learning anything that they don't agree with. They form an opinion and then only look for supporting evidence. Critical thinkers instead look for information from various sources and then form an opinion based on the varied evidence. People who still support trump are not critical thinkers, or they know who he is and like that he attacks and blames the people that they want getting attacked and blamed. There's a reason he attracts hate groups, casual racists, and evangelicals. These people are also ignorant, but also pretty cunning about it.
But memes are bad at nuance, so they just said "stupid" as a general shorthand. At least that's what my take is.
More like 80 million. Only about half of our 332 million (ish) people vote, and the voters are split pretty evenly because a shitload of people are both passionate and not fully informed. About 8% of Americans are felons, and therefore unable to vote, so that's over 25 million disenfranchised voters right there. And when police targets a specific kind of person on sight who usually votes in a particular way, it's pretty clear which party they support even before you've looked at endorsements. All I'm saying is that cops rarely shoot conservatives.
It feels like we're kinda at the tipping point. They would've already irreversibly won if they'd had another ten years or so of defunding education before undoing Roe v Wade. There are enough people paying attention still, so individual states are putting their own abortion rights in place and voters are rejecting bans when they have a say in the matter. But the states where it's close will experience brain drain and eventually get their abortion bans through and then be a cinch for House seats and electoral college votes. If it works in enough purple states, it's game over. USA would be the new KSA.
Some of us Americans are paying attention, and we're scared shitless. I would rather not have to flee to Europe as a refugee, but as a power plant operator with water treatment expertise, I could bring value to whatever country would have me.

i dont even live in the u.s and could still notice there's no glimmer of hope for things to become better (also doesn't mean that i am living in a better place)

exactly. the best way to approach this is to keep an open mind and be willing to learn a new language and embrace a new culture to find a fitting job. Not all european countries fair well but some are better than others. i think thou that UK is still a no-go, since its the same bunch. Commonwealth my a$$.
Conflating harmful actions with lack of intelligence does everyone a disservice. To suggest that “stupidity” that is what makes people act badly undermines any real accountability. The causes of problematic behavior rarely have anything to do with mental acuity, and we can’t properly address harmful behavior while being so reductive about its causes. Carelessness, bias, hatred, greed, closed-mindedness, indifference – these are the traits that lead to oppression. Our intelligence is not the issue so much as our sense of compassion and justice.
A person can be unintelligent and still know right from wrong. There are people with cognitive disabilities who I respect a thousand times more than those who are supposedly more abled. They have stronger principles, seek to better themselves, and are committed to being good people. They are just capable of being sensitive and caring as everyone else. To imply that they aren’t is outrageous.
