We recently discovered that the end-user experience around denied applications is a bit confusing and perhaps in need of some work. As best as we can tell, if we deny an application there is no notification nor a reason displayed to the person who's been denied. We don't want this experience happening to anyone we deny (it's not particularly nice to ghost people!) and we expect that many of the denied applications are great people who are just in a hurry and not writing enough for us to assess if they're a fit for our ethos, so we wanted to make this post for anyone who tried to register and is confused about what happened or anyone still yet to register.
When registering, please answer the questions in full as it helps us to understand if you'd be a good fit here. We created a post in lemmy support to get some clarification on this issue, but we're not sure how long it will take to resolve or what changes we may need to do to our process.
Just out of curiosity, are y'all also assuming there's a notification sent out on approvals? Because I definitely waited a bit to see if there was a message indicating if I'd been accepted or not and then just decided to try logging in to see what happened and nothing ever popped up.
we're checking now, because this is obviously a big problem if people aren't reliably getting the emails. no ETA on anything further, but this really helps us get an idea of where the problem might be and if it's on our end or on lemmy's, or a combination of both.
To be fair submitting an email address when signing up is optional, so there’s a good chance people forgot to add an email address. I got an email once I was accepted.
I added my email but never received anything (not in spam either). I just tried logging in to see if I was accepted. They say above it is a gmail error, which is what I use so other gmail users may be affected.
noted and passed on. you might have been caught in a weird transition period; a few of our emails are also still bouncing, although we think the bulk of it is solved.
Lol, yeah I waited a full 24 hours and was assuming I was denied since I received nothing. I decided to just try logging in this morning to see and lo and behold.
When I applied yesterday, I was pleased (privacy reasons) to see that email address was optional, so I didn't enter it. Later I realized that meant I wouldn't get a notification of acceptance or not. Less than 24 yrs later I was able to log in, so "yay".
If I discover a benefit to providing my email, I'll do so, but for now it's nice to have the option to be stand alone.
we have been assuming this but that issue, at least, is less of one because we've never approved a user in less than 24 hours. if someone isn't approved though they'll literally have to infer that, whereas they generally won't need to if we approve them
Yeah. I figured that the rejection case is the more concerning one on the whole, but I figure some extra data points can't hurt.
Plus, I figure there'll probably be at least a couple of folks like me who weren't sure if it would be rude to try logging in after waiting a bit if they didn't receive anything, so seeing other folks encountering the same hiccup might be comforting. :P
we do appreciate it a whole lot yeah. this kind of fucks up our whole system and has led to our first real backlog in users that we don't know what to do with, lol
