PSA: Uploading any pictures will fail until end of migration

We have to move to object storage to have efficient image storage. We are currently at 70% of our disk storage.

We are sorry for the short notice and we don't know how long it will take though we believe it will take multiple hours.

    ---

    Small post mortem :

    1. The migration required us to be down - we thought we could run without images
    2. It took much longer than initially anticipated
    3. It broke at close to 2:30AM - 3 hours into the migration and I couldn't fix it so the server has been down doing nothing for hours now
    4. We're booting back up from the backup made before the migration was attempted, we'll try another strategy.

There might've been some data loss in images, we're looking into it. In the meanwhile, if your profile picture or banner is broken, feel free to re-upload them.

    ---

    Update :

    Hi Beeple!

    We're trying this again.

This time, Beehaw should remain available though no pictures will be able to be uploaded. The error will likely be weird because Lemmy will think it is possible but we will block the upload from happening.

We'll take a snapshot of the pictures before the migration in 60 minutes at 21:00 UTC - it should take around one hour, do the migration and testing on our own before shipping on Beehaw.

Once we've resolved all these kinks, Beehaw will momentarily go down and then back up with the migration complete without losing any old pictures.

Beehaw's Demographics survey of June 2023!

Compiling this data was not as hard as I expected, let's go through the data and the shiny graphs!

    Age of Beeple

    !

Most are above 24! Seems we got an older average age compared to a lot of social media. It would be interesting to see how many came here with experiences from independent forums before Reddit.

    Where Beeple reside

    ! !

This one's a big graph. Though we can notice most people are from the US. Would be nice to see more countries represented though a big part of it likely has to do with language. (You will need to open the big graph in another tab, it's too big to show properly.)

    Gender identity of Beeple

    !

So, as expected, mostly men. However, less than expected which is nice to see. There should be outreach to at least equalize this.

    Sexual orientation of Beeple

    !

This is kinda surprising. It seems we managed to get a lot more LGBTQ+ people than expected considering most of you all come from Reddit - so this is nice to see. This is most likely because of our focus on a safe space.

    Whiteness of Beeple

    !

As expected, mostly white which is unfortunate. I think there's outreach to be done in that regard as well.

    Neurodivergence of Beeple

    !

We seem to have a really surprising amount of neurodivergent people! Definitely nice to see.

    Beeple with disabilities

    !

I.. have no idea how to interpret this data so I'll just say, shiny graph.

    Beeple's awareness of the Fediverse

    !

Most knew about the fediverse but still a good 20% had not heard about it so glad to see you all managed to find your way here!

How Beeple have been dealing with Beehaw

    ! !

It seems most people feel relatively confident in their ability to use Beehaw and most people seem to enjoy it. That makes me really happy to see. Feels rewarding, feels good.

    Conclusion

I wanna thank everyone for the feedback about the survey and its questions - we'll do better next time! I'm glad we did this survey because it shows the areas to work on in terms of outreach! Thank you all for your participation!

Defederation from instances suspected of becoming bots haven

based on the list of instances made by @[email protected] here - Thank you again for that work, it's highly appreciated.

This is a preventive measure against massive amounts of accounts being created for botting purposes. Most instances banned appear to be 1 user instances so we don't think this will have a great effect on anyone's usage of Beehaw. If you are an admin of one of those instances, feel free to contact us at [email protected]

[SOLVED] Still can't sign up for Beehaw 😞🐝
  • Lemmy creates the account before being approved - it is quite silly. If you can give me the username, I can give it a look, we're currently going through all the backlog for people we missed.

  • Beehaw's mod tool needs
  • Yeah, the issue is people without email but also people with the wrong email. I've caught quite a few typos from our email server not being able to send their approval because the email had a typo. I did send them manually and tell them the error they made.

So, I guess we could just change email but I don't see quite the difference in terms of abuse with regards to change password if I could simply change someone's email and get it anyways.

  • Beehaw's mod tool needs

Here's a laundry list of sort with tons of tools we'd like to see

    • Role for approval of applications (to delegate)
    • Site mods (to delegate from admins)
    • Auto-report posts with certain keywords or domains (for easier time curating without reports)
    • Statistics on growth (user, comments, posts, reports)
      • User total
      • MUA
      • User retention
      • Number of comments
      • Number of posts
      • Number of reports open
      • Number of reports resolved
    • Sort reports
      • by resolved/open
      • by local/remote
    • Different ways to resolved a report
      • Suspend account for a limited amount of time rather than just banning
      • Send warning
    • Account mod info
      • Number of 'strikes' (global and local) and reports
      • Moderation notes
      • Change email
      • Change password
      • Change role
    • Ability to pin messages in a post
    • Admins should be able to purge
    • Filter modlog to local
    • Better federation tools (applications to communities, limiting)
      • Applications to communities to allow safe spaces to exist (people should not be able to just "walk in" on a safe space - similarly to follow requests in Mastodon in a way)
      • Limiting (Lock our communities down from certain instances but still allow people using our instance to talk to people from those instances)

Obviously considering the moment when this is being made - federation tools are our highest priority.

[SOLVED] Still can't sign up for Beehaw 😞🐝
  • It's been approved. Thank you for your patience.

  • [SOLVED] Still can't sign up for Beehaw 😞🐝
  • Ah yeah, Lemmy doesn't say when a username is taken..

Was that really the problem all along?

  • [SOLVED] Still can't sign up for Beehaw 😞🐝
  • What? You signed in today? https://beehaw.org/u/Dee

    I am very confused.

  • Reddit habit is hard to break.
  • I want to use it but I've not yet paid for it so I've unfortunately not done so yet. I don't currently have a job so it's pretty hard to justify...

  • How do you use RSS?
  • I use RSS through Readwise Reader though I've used Newsblur in the past. I really wish Newsblur was redesign to get a more modern interface..

  • welcome, new Beehaw users and lurkers. an FAQ and introduction to Beehaw
  • There is currently no discussion or consideration happening but I'm not sure if that might become an option in Lemmy in the future as it seems a few people want this feature for communities that allow downvotes.

That said, at the moment, downvotes from other instances or the host instance does not appear to Beehaw users so I don't think it actually has a negative effect.

  • Do upvotes matter?
  • Really? I wonder where it gets that information from... Is it just doing the math for all the posts on someone's account? I'd think not since that'd be pretty slow.. Do you have any idea how?

  • Reddit habit is hard to break.
  • I think the one you're looking for is kagi.com!

  • I'm really enjoying no down votes on Beehaw
  • You can actually do that. In your settings on Lemmy, you can disable "Show scores".

  • I'm really enjoying no down votes on Beehaw
  • If people are spreading conspiracy theories or harmful content, we do remove it of course. I think the example of Facebook is exactly where moderation is important. Not where downvotes are important.

Because to put it simply, conspiracy theories and harmful content usually get posted in echo chambers where people will agree anyways so a downvote does nothing to solve the problem imo.

  • FOSS Lemmy moderation tools?
  • I feel like since this is a FOSS platform, while it might not be as flexible as something standalone, it would be nice to include all the batteries in Lemmy. This is something we can do better than Reddit.

  • More Specific Science Communities
  • Currently we like general topics to make sure that there's enough conversations being made. If the science community gets pretty big, we'd indeed like to divide it into things that take a lot of space on the community.

I also think that instances that are specialized are pretty cool.

  • new Beehaw community icons!
  • I think you have the "Randomly appear posts at the top" bug that is unfortunately fairly common. I would hope it's fixed in the next update to Lemmy we're doing tomorrow morning.

  • please be measured in what you expect of us: a non-binding appeal from one of the people running the site
  • It should work... I can see that email was in fact sent to your email...

If your password is more than 60 characters long, you need to shorten it.. This could also be some kind of bug.. I'm not sure. We are updating Lemmy tomorrow morning so maybe that'll fix it?
