I don't think I have more than 17,000 miles on these pads and it seems like I have plenty left. It's like this all the way around. Am I wrong to think that I have some time before I need brake service?
What's the other side pad look like? If the slider pins are stuck or not properly lubricated, one side brake pad will wear out way faster than the other.
Edit: Also the rotor doesn't look happy. IMHO, it's due for a full proper service.
Same amount of pad remaining on the other side of the rotor. The pads on the other side of the car are in the same condition. The rotor is a little sad and rusty, but that's because I don't drive this car very much these days. It's difficult to get a good look at the rear pads, but I can feel with my fingers that they still have some meat left on them and are also wearing symmetrically. I don't understand why this mechanic would tell me I need brakes when it's not difficult for me to check for myself. Brake fluid level is good and car doesn't have trouble stopping.
Oof. Yeah, it's entirely possible that particular mechanic is trying to sell you snake oil then. Going by your description, it sounds like everything is okay. But if you have any doubts, seek a second opinion from another mechanic.
That pad looks fine. The Rotor does show Somme decent wear but it doesn’t look horrible either. If the rear side pads match the fronts then I’d say run what you have. Also note that brake pad & rotor changes are probably a 2 out of 10 on the difficulty scale. Did my wife’s front two last night in about an hour and a half.
