What industry secret are you aware of that most people aren't?
  • Great points. Note: I’m not arguing against it as a concept. I’m just skeptical that it’ll happen, and even if it did, there wouldn’t likely be terrible consequences for the accused, especially as that’s what science is… new facts change the outcome vs choosing an outcome and matching facts to it.

  • The Solar Pedilio Aimed To Be a Replacement for Cars but Vanished From the News Instead
  • I really think that there is a market for whether I cheekily refer to as an OPEC (One Person Electric Car). Aim for a $5-7k price tag. 100 miles of range, max of 80 mph. USA federal refs would require a backup camera but I’d save $ by requiring the end user to bring an iPhone or Android device for any mapping, or infotainment via a single speaker. AC and Heat would be required as I’d expect this to be a commuter car. Storage can be minuscule to non existent as this would not be a standard grocery getter… maybe a big backpack size compartment so the business user can fit their laptop… Make it small but ok to drive 20 minutes back and forth to the office or for the quick errand. A good second car.

  • The guy who owns the company I work for has a 2002 that is about the same vintage. Got it as a 'turnkey ready racer' and I'm pretty sure that it blew the head gasket on it's first outing :(

  • Article is paywalled, but love the headline. Imagine a future with energy as an essentially free resource. We have a LONG way to go, but just the fact that we are moving in the right direction gives me a glimmer of hope for the future.

  • Actually the low cost part of this was that they weren't upgraded cells. Just tested-good cells from other battery packs. Most of the time it's just a couple cells in the bigger battery that have issues, and they take those out of the pool and make a good amount of $$$ because we were required to send back all of our cells. Assuming that of the 26 (iirc) cells that 3 or 4 were bad that's a big profit margin for sure. The car worked great after swapping them out.

The report found that energy demand throughout the state of Texas could reach as high as 78,000 megawatts in August. And city and county officials will open 22 cooling centers for the summer.

Here's your twice-annual warning! Texas' power grid can't handle cold OR hot! Has anyone tried cutting taxes and banning people from bathrooms? That'll probably make this better.

Texas asks people to stop driving their cars LOL
  • Truth be told, i'm somewhat on the fence about tolls. Charges the actual users vs 'everybody at random'. Generally I'm against them tho, as it tends to punish lower wage earners a lot more than higher wage earners. The economics of it tend to skew richer people to move to areas with more tolls tho, as they take that cost into account as a smaller portion of their overall budget.

Because riding my bike 11 miles to work in 95 degree heat with unhealthy air to breathe is totally an option! I'd rather take my mega-bro-dozer pickup, in case I need to buy 1000lbs of mulch... /Sarc

Disaster is nearing. Mass displacement. Mass starvation. Mass death. It is all imminent. Do you understand?
  • Actually, no! Once the really BIG human die-offs start, the hyperwealthy will 'bunker up' for a while and once the population shrinks back down, we won't be putting out all that greenhouse gas anymore, and the earth will cool back down. They'll keep a few cities in places like Norway or what have you around to keep providing food and fuel for their choppers and parties.

  • I replaced the main battery in a Gen1 Prius. Fiddly. Had to get a strong buddy to help lift it in and out of the car, but we did it in a long weekend. A full set of 'used but tested' cells cost something like $750 but that was probably 8 years ago.

  • Electric Cars Are Suddenly Becoming Affordable
  • If it’s even possible. I’ve personally swapped the main battery pack on a Gen 1 Prius. Not easy, but more tedious than technical. Lifting the assembled unit was a hell of a chore but a coulple strapping dudes managed it. Reconditioned cells are available in a lot of places. I’ve had a Nissan Leaf and would get another one, but even finding a battery, let alone any info on swapping it was pretty much impossible.

    Trackdaybro

I didn't even think of making a S2000 community! Good idea! I'm based in Texas, USA and my '04 is primarily a trackday toy. Its currently street legal, but I've started towing it to events, as I don't want to break down and not be able to get it home. The photo is an old one, back when I had just got the car.

Another kickoff post: I've got track experience in 3 cars - What's everyone else driving? I have a 04 S2000 that is shared duty between street and track, I'm on a Lemons team with a Nissan S14, and have driven a buddy's 350Z in a Champcar race.

    Creating a Community issue?

Is the community creation causing issues for anyone else at the moment? I've been trying for a few hours now to create a community, but I'm suffering the spinning wheel forever. I'm assuming that it's just overloaded server, but in case someone has a hint, I'd appreciate it!

    DFW Toddler Resources

My wife and I have a toddler and a newborn. I figure a thread on play-places, parks and kid-friendly events is a good idea :)

Even though malls are dying, we take the kids to play at

~Willow Bend - Half dead mall. Playplace is nice, but ratio of climb-ables to space means this one is better suited to running around than play.

~ Lewisville (music city). 80% dead mall. A couple small slides for the littles, and a big climbing gym for the bigger kids. Usually quite a bit quieter than any other mall, and you can generally let the littles run wild in the mall halls as it's so dead.

~ Stonebriar - fairly thriving mall. Playplace is PACKED with climbable stuff (almost too packed) and fairly small, especially for how busy it gets at times.

~ Prestonwood Church - Play place is free and not at a mall! Really better for kids out of the toddler stage.
