Province to use tobacco company settlement funds to pay for new CancerCare building
This is exactly how taxation, regulation and control of corporations should work.
Anyone and any company is free to do what they want, even if it means negatively affecting the health of people, as long as governments are able to penalize them appropriately for the damage they cause.
If we don't do this ... then we are just rewarding companies for destroying society and the more they do it, the more likely they will continue doing negative things and even more destructive things because they know it will make them money without any consequences.
The big problem with the US ruling though (unsure if the Canadian ruling was the same) is they got a yearly payment that was dependent on cigarette sales.
Then the states borrowed against that future revenue.
And when cigarette sales started to drop thanks to alternatives like vaping, suddenly the states were faced with the fact they might default on their loans as those yearly payments started to shrink. So what do they do? Work their ass off to ban vaping, claiming it's "for the children".
Agreed. This is great to see, and I hope to see more of it. Let's hold business accountable for their impacts on our society.
