My last post was a lot more intresting then I thought, so here I am again asking in a diffrent flavor. Whats your personal favorite mmorpg of all time?
Link to the previous post: https://lemmy.zip/post/8199293
Does not have to be a good mmo. Reasoning can be anything. If you read my last post you know I'm a huge fan of dungeons and dragons online, which may not be most people's ides of a quality mmo.
Feel free to mention old games that aren't around anymore, upcoming mmorpgs, or anything else you want to talk about really. I'm doing these mostly for my own entertainment, and hope you will feel free to do the same. Please use the games full name at least once, as acronyms can be confusing for myself and people like me.
Bonus points if you tell me about the worst mmorpg you actually like and play.

What happened to Genfanad?
Genfanad, short for Generic Fantasy Adventure, used to be a browser-based parody/clone of OldSchool runescape with a very sarcastic and self aware sense of humor. If you're a fan of Josh Strife Hayes, you've probably seen his video on it a year back. I've never really played it myself, but I randomly checked the website today and found that the game transformed into some sort of MMO card battler hybrid?
Not going to lie that combination sounds super interesting to me but I'm very confused on why such a huge shift happened in the game's development direction. I had to check the date to make sure it's not April 1st.
Are there any fans of the game here that know why this happened, or want to share their feelings on the change/the state of the game? I've found very few people talking about it online

Mmorpg reccomendations?
I'm sure a lot of you are very sick of this question. Like me, you've probably remained on the hunt for that perfect mmo experience for 10+ years. I'm not sure if there's anything else for me to find I haven't looked into, but I still really want to hear from the lemmy community on this. I'm not just looking for reccomendations for me, but also just wanting to know what you like. I'm expecting this to go about the same as the reddit threads asking the same thing, but I think the conversation is still worth having!
As for what I like, I was a classic runescape player before moving onto guid wars 2, but my all time favorite is dungeons and dragons online. I value character expression above almost everything else, and ddo is pretty good about giving you the same freedoms you would have in pen and paper did. Despite its shortcomings, this alone is why I keep going back to ddo over things like gw2 or elder scrolls online. With eso, and most others, I feel like my character is the same as everyone else's. Ddo makes my roll as a Rouge or cleric feel much more rewarding, and I still feel like I'm playing an individual custom character.
Honorable mentions would go to Black desert online for its amazing graphics and game play, and Albion online for being one of the most unique and interesting mmo experiences I've had in a while.
I don't think there is currently anything out that will be 100% what I like, but anything new to explore is welcome. Of course the goal here isn't really to find anything new, I just want to hear your thoughts on some of your favorites.
I'm bad with acronyms so I would appreciate it if you said the games real name at least once. Throw whatever you want at me even if it's way off topic. Upcoming or in development games are fine too!

What you guys think? I'll be honest: I never understood the appeal of these league type things. As soon as I make an alt and miss something my main has, I instantly get demotivated to play the alt and go back to my main character.
Yet, they are still very popular.

Yes, some direction tends to be good to get players into content, im my experience. But maybe I'm just terrible at sandboxes?

Does anyone here play Aion classic?
I'm wondering if it would be good to go back to it. Is it just nostalgia or is there something good there? As far as I understand it is still pay to win but has a good population, so it can't be that bad?

Recommendations for non-combat MMO's?
Been really enjoying Palia lately. I like all the little quests and the emphasis on gathering, crafting, farming, etc. And really enjoy the absence of any sort of combat. Are there any other MMO's like that?
-
How are you liking Palia so far?
It's been a while since the open beta started, I haven't tried the game myself but if you did, do you recommend it? I would love to hear your thoughts about it in general, I'm interested in the game but haven't seen many reviews yet

Anybody else unreasonably excited for this one?
Looks like a really fun MMO-lite with potential and plans to lean more heavily into MMO elements. Pretty much looks like fantasy Warframe with cream on top. Monetization looks fair as it is published by the same guys that did Warframe and I think they have a good reputation for how they do their monetization.
No wipe after EA ends so this is pretty much early launch, though it will eventually be F2P after official launch.
Actual showcase starts at around 00:30 mark.

I don't think the announcement is up on their website, but you can see it here on their Discord.
If you're never heard of it, it's an indie MMO that's going for an oldschool feel with the unique feature of dungeon masters interacting with the players live. You can see that it's super janky, but it has some charming features like the classes and the setting. It was previously set to release Q3 2023.
Alongside the name change, they've also announced a rework of the combat system and removed the release date estimate.
I barely follow the game's development so maybe this delay was something that could be seen from miles away but I personally thought the game would be a fun way to pass a few weeks, especially given that there's not much else in the MMO space that's coming out soon besides Palia. In my opinion, I think this game is destined to have a niche following before petering out some months after release, and a combat rework by itself won't change that, it's just wasting time and money.
Were you aware that the game existed at all? And how do you feel about the changes?

What are people's favourite pre-WOW MMOs that are still worth playing today?
I long for the days of yore, but I never really got into MMOs until WOW and I've always been jealous heating the stories of people playing MMOs prior.
At some point in the future I'm going to be making an XP era PC build where I plan to play some older games from my childhood as well and any MMOs from that era that I missed out on
Also going to try and get properly into FFXI at some point too but I'm wanting to hear other suggestions too.
I've tried everquest but the way they center the character in the 3rd person view starts to mess with my motion sickness a bit feeling like I have to look at the ground a lot more than I'd normally prefer.
