PlayStation won't launch any "major" games in existing franchises this year
  • Third party exclusives will carry, and with Xbox games coming to Playstation I think the fans are good. The article talks about "financial year". I guess it is about the Japanese financial year, which ends in Dezember, right? The US financial year is in July. Is this how it works?

  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's director wants series vets and newbies alike to be surprised by its twist and turns, seeing the remake as more than 'just a callback'
  • It should have been called Reimagination to set expectations for existing fans. FF7 original is probably my favorite game of all time (tie with FF6) and I still did not play Remake (lost interest waiting too long and then asking price on Steam is 80 Euros, fuck you SquareEnix!).

But you know, I am not entirely opposed to changes in story and character handling, if its done well. They even changed up the battle system. To me this is an opportunity to re-live the game, to experience it with new perspective and see details I could not before. If it was exactly the same game with better graphics, that's just playing the same game again. But the Remake... ahem, I meant Reimagination, is different. And you know what, I kinda like this idea. But off course, I still did not play and don't know how bad it is. And oh god, I hope they don't change the important story line in part 2... this would be a huge fuck.

    v0.10 - February 11, 2024

It's been a while since my last update on this tool. The truth is, it worked quite well over the years. I tried to do some GUI stuff too, but gave up on that, plus a few things changed in my life. But now I got a good reason to go back and do something.

Recently the emulator PPSSPP 1.17 got support for CHD files too. Finally! But there is a twist. The standard way of encoding CHD files with chdman createcd command are horrible for PSP games. I added a command -m or --mode to be able to choose between cd and dvd format. CD is the default, so be careful when converting PSP ISOs and use --mode dvd instead as an option.

Other than that I added a few more options, such as -s or --stats to display a summary at the end of the process. I also updated the Readme a little bit and and removed confusing and unnecessary Makefile and PKGBUILD files. Make sure to uninstall a previous tochd installation, if you gonna use the manual custom installer suggested_install.sh script.

    • new: option -m to specify disc format created by chdman backend, defaults to cd, but for certain emulators (such as ppsspp) dvd is recommended
    • new: option -s to display additional stats, such as a summary at the end and how long the operation took
    • new option -n to simply shorten the displayed path of printed jobs as filenames only, excluding the folder part
    • changed: also the install and uninstall scripts are reworked
    • removed: Makefile deleted, no need for PyInstaller packaged bundles, assuming most modern distributions can run the Python script anyway
    • removed: PKGBUILD deleted, which was used to create the Archlinux package for the AUR, its just confusing and unnecessary for the end user and not needed to be part of the project

MSI's new Claw handheld goes head to head with Lenovo and Asus at $700
  • I don't know what you mean. It even has a screen. Not an OLED, but at that price point we can't nitpick, right? The only thing I really like on this device are the builtin Hall effect thumbsticks.

  • The Pokémon Company Announces It Will ‘Investigate’ Palworld IP And Assets
  • Your hypothesis is that Nintendo, one of the most litigous companies on the planet, that routinely shuts down infringing projects during development, saw that trailer and made no attempt to investigate whether that game might infringe their IP over the last two years?

But the trailer did not contain any copyright violations or IP infringements. Now the game is out, with lots of content and a huge world, a deep dive can be done and checked every detail if anything violates something. And the game is commercial and out, and the evidence is in their hands if there is any. This can't be done with just 2 trailers showing 0,05% of the game and content. With the game in their hand, they can compare models exactly in example.

I personally don't think there is any violation here, but I am not here to judge. I just wanted to explain that this deep dive could not be done in the prior 2 years before.

  • The Pokémon Company Announces It Will ‘Investigate’ Palworld IP And Assets
  • So does Rockstar, Valve and Microsoft investigate for any unlicensed commercial usage of the Intellectual Property they own and copyright violations by others. Some are less aggressive, that's for true. If it's not, then Pokemon Company or Nintendo simply don't care.

Edit: Did the reply I was replying to disappeared? I am sure I was replying to someone who said Nintendo would go to investigate the game for any IP infringement.

  • Valve likely earned over $1bn in Counter-Strike 2 loot boxes last year
  • While I agree to a certain degree with you, to be fair it should be mentioned that the cases are not all the same. EA was hated because the chances to get something was very low and the characters could be earned by gameplay with extra long grind. We are talking about gameplay elements making it pay to win in a AAA full priced game here, not just skins like in free to play Fortnite or cheap CS:GO CS2. Huge difference.

I can't make a comment about the Class Action against Epic and it's Lootboxes, as I did not read enough about it.

  • Valve likely earned over $1bn in Counter-Strike 2 loot boxes last year
  • Loot boxes should not be in computer games.

As much as I like Valve, Valve is one of the major player bringing and normalizing Lootboxes into games. Even before the Lootboxes was a thing on smartphones, let alone before they arrived on other AAA games as well. I think this is the worst contribution of Valve to videogames. And this statement comes from someone who usually defends this company.

  • Valve likely earned over $1bn in Counter-Strike 2 loot boxes last year
  • Last year after I showed off my brother the Steam Deck, he decided to sell most of his CS:GO skins and purchase with the money the Steam Deck (but 64gb model). It was one of his best decisions, because he was thinking of getting a cheap laptop to play simple games and do simple web browsing.

Now he is a Linux user. :> Gott'em!

Palworld beat Counter Strike 2's alltime peak of concurrent player count

And the impressive thing is, Palworld isn't even free to play, it's a (relative cheap) priced games. So this number is not just people trying it out for free. Also have in mind the game is on Game Pass on Xbox and on PC. So there are actually people not buying and playing on Steam.

The only game with more concurrent player record is still held by PUBG, which is at 3.2 million.

Monster Hunter Rise update adds Enigma DRM, breaks Steam Deck compatibility
  • I'm glad to not have invested into the Capcom games. The article talks about Steam Deck only, but I assume its broken on Linux as well ("Linux" as a word isn't found on the article).

  • Palworld Sells Over 1 Million Copies in Just 8 Hours as Steam Servers Struggle to Cope With Launch - IGN
  • The comparison does not hold up, because Lies of P and Bloodborne have the same game concept besides its style (in a broader sense). While this game Palword has nothing to do with Pokemon, in gameplay. It's not a role playing game with menus, and there are no tactical rpg fights. It's also not about collecting them, raising and building a team to fight in the way its done in Pokemon.

But if this had the official license of Pokemon and said to me its a side game, I would totally believe. Something like Pokemon Mystery Dungeons or Legends Arceus, it would make sense, besides the slavery aspect and the guns and cook meating them and so on (love this ridiculous theme).

  • Palworld Sells Over 1 Million Copies in Just 8 Hours as Steam Servers Struggle to Cope With Launch - IGN
  • Doesn't come out of nowhere to my knowledge. It is quite anticipated game by many, as it was shown with trailers before on big shows. Everyone was wondering what kind of game this will be and everyone just knew it as "Pokemon with guns" where you can catch and slave other Pokemon like creatures. I'm actually surprised that so many didn't heard of the game before.

  • Ayaneo announces the Next Lite, the first non-Valve handheld PC with SteamOS preinstalled
  • In the past, Ayaneo has been somewhat reticent to discuss its plans concerning SteamOS and as this new venture is not a direct collaboration with Valve, I should imagine that they want to test the waters first.

If this is not a collaboration with Valve, then I assume it's not SteamOS. Maybe HoloISO that is created by "fans" with the aim of installing an operating system that is extracted and rebuild from the final installation on the Deck (if I understand the project right). The goal is to have HoloISO be able to install on systems other than the Deck itself, to get a similar experience. Maybe the Ayaneo will make use of HoloISO instead?

The project still needs funding and time to be build, so nothing is set in stone. Valve also works "hard" to bring SteamOS to other systems, so maybe there is a plan to do this. Now the Deck OLED is out, Valve probably have more time to do this (SteamOS 4.0?). Either way, I am very happy and curious what will happen next.

  • Steam kicks off 2024 with its highest-ever concurrents and player count
  • Exactly why I don't want to use GOG. There are third party clients, but I refuse to build an entire catalog if the company does not provide something official.

  • Xbox Network will implement mass content deletion taking effect from January 9th
  • I expected a more sensible default, such as 365 days. It would also be helpful to have a 'favorite' option to prevent deletion. This is a major letdown.

  • So, Uh, What's Up With The Steam Awards?
  • Are you sure? I could vote for games which I did not own. And I did that, to get the stickers associated with the votes.

  • So, Uh, What's Up With The Steam Awards?
  • People will never be satisfied with awards. Let the community choose? You get popularity contest. Let the review outlets choose? Then you get only a certain kind of games to win the contest. Steam is very community focused in most of their recommendations and in this case, awards. This has ups and downs and sometimes its stupid. In case of RDR2 who knows what the reason was why they chose this game. It might be an attempt to troll in mass. Or a misunderstanding.

I take awards as one kind of view and never in isolation. Context matters. So I ignore those where I think it is stupid awards, like Starfield and RDR2, and look at the other candidates. And the other categories as well. And then move on with my life. Just like with the other award shows. Who cares what game won what award? It rarely impacts my choice.

  • Bethesda plans to update Starfield "roughly every six weeks starting in February"
  • Just like Cyberpunk 2077, I will wait for this game to be worked on and get it for a discount later. I learned my lesson long time ago, not to buy big AAA games at launch.

We're playing a Half-Life Cut content recreation mod, Half-Life: Absolute Zero, with one of the original level designers from Valve Software, Brett Johnson. Mr. Johnson worked at Valve from 1996 until 1999, and was responsible for most of the design of Anomalous Materials, Unforeseen Consequences, Surface Tension, the multiplayer map Stalkyard, among many other things. We play through his sections of this recreation mod, judging it's accuracy, and telling stories of what Valve was like back in the 90s. This one is special, thank you Brett.

Rant about Nvidia related updates on Linux

There are many reasons to dislike Nvidia on Linux. Here is a little thing that bugs me all the time, the updates. Normally the system updates would be quick and fast, but with the proprietary drivers of Nvidia involved, it gets quiet slow process. And I am not even talking about any other problem I encounter, just about the updates.

As an Archlinux based system user (EndeavourOS to be precise), I get new Kernel updates all the time. That means every time a new Kernel version is installed, the Nvidia driver DKMS has to be installed too. And that is basically the slowest part. But that's not too bad, even though it's doing this twice for each Kernel I have once.

What's more infuriating is, if you also happen to use Flatpaks for a very few applications. I really don't have many Flatpaks at all. Yet, the Nvidia drivers are installed in 7 versions or what?! And they are full downloads, each 340 MB or more. This takes ages and is the only part that takes long to update Flatpak system. I always do flatpak remove --unused to make sure nothing useless is present. /RANT (EDIT: Just typos corrected.)

Overwatch Cinematic Trailer [8 years ago]

    Nostalgia alarm!

In anticipation of the launch for Overwatch 2 on Steam, I'm watching some videos. I didn't play the game in 5 years! So much changed. Original Overwatch is one of my all time favorites. Watching this initial trailer or short film brings so many memories back. Every character, every line, every moment, I miss those days.

I'm currently going through the list of videos, as I cannot wait the launch on Steam. It's time the Overwatch unites with the rest of the world. This is a new beginning (for me).
