Police commission wants to use money for community agencies to pay for CPS gun range | CBC News
The Calgary Police Service wants to divert $13M intended for supports for people who are unhoused and/or struggling with mental health in order to pay for a new shooting range whose budget has gone up 130% in just one year.
Description was added after my original post and I agree it's bad (looks like AI generated drek). That said, the video is good and worth a watch.
Well thanks for that - it's solid discussion!
Is there a reason this is being down voted so much? I've only watched the first few minutes and I was actually surprised I hadn't come across this channel before.
APTN has identified the man who died after being arrested by Calgary police Tuesday as 42-year-old Jon Wells.
According to the article, this is the seventh death of a First Nations person in police custody in the last three weeks.
Cpl. Peter Leckie pleaded guilty in 2023 to three counts of breach of trust for accessing confidential files unrelated to his policing duties, without authorization.
Officer accessed police databases over 100 times in order to further inappropriate relationships with vulnerable women - including showing up at the home of a 19 year old whose father was just murdered.
There's a difference between defending oneself and engaging in collective punishment and genocide. I am Jewish and the descendent of holocaust survivors. Not in my name.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team said it was directed to investigate the incident that unfolded 'in the early hours' of Oct. 23, 2022.
Nicely done! Did you wind in the barrel adjusters at the same time? I find barrel adjusters let me really maximize my procrastination ;)
A Toronto police officer facing charges for stealing the personal items of a missing person was arrested for trying to leave Canada.
So glad tax payers have been paying the salary for this officer for over two years. My read from the article is that we are STILL paying his salary despite him being convicted on 15 counts.
Fantastic comment. Only item I might disagree on is bearings IF the bike has cartridge bearings as those are easy to work with. If it's cup and cone/loose ball then yea, I'd recommend just letting the shop do it only because cone wrenches are a pretty specific tool.
Lots of bike shops (especially community bike shops) offer inexpensive courses on bike maintenance which are a great option for learning.
The upshot is every time this guy starts freaking out I find a cool new event to attend.
I LOVE that idea! One of our resident cats is a pain to give meds to so I'll give it a try!
And yes, Bo is half (or so) Bengal. He came to us completely feral but needed those meds so he didn't go the TNR route. He's turned into a super friendly guy who craves getting pets - just took a bit to get there. He's also basically vocal chords on four legs - sings all day long.
If anyone is interested in adopting, he's listed with MEOW in Calgary, Canada!
66% of our resident cats are on prescription diets. Total non-issue. I think people just worry about other unanticipated costs.
My partner and I foster a lot of cats. Some of the sweetest cats take forever to get adopted just because they aren't kittens anymore. One of our fosters has been with us for almost three years now - just because he isn't a kitten and needs some inexpensive meds sprinkled on his food once a day.
Oof... Not a good look for Canadian soccer. An analyst specifically stating that they were unwilling to spy because they were being pressured to do so...
Kamloops Mountie charged with assault, mischief after video of rough arrest goes viral
Charges of assault and mischief were laid Wednesday against Kamloops RCMP Const. David Tucker.

She's discovered that she can get 'mom time' by jumping up on the desk we have in the room because oh man, do they never let her rest otherwise.
Six kittens and one tired mom
We just took in a rescue litter from the shelter. Everyone has colds, and mom is pretty battle-worn (limping, lost a chunk of her ear to frostbite over the winter). Everyone is getting medical support and once they are old enough, we'll find these teeny terrors forever homes!
Right now, despite being 'ferral', Mom likes to curl up next to me while she nurses - it's pretty heart melting.
Fines clearly don't work. We need criminal penalties.
Yep - I identify as male, but I put he/they in my email signature because I a) want to signal active support for the trans community and b) don't really think about my own gender much and kind of like de-gendering my language wherever possible.
The willingness to try and legislate away strikes is really problematic...
I think a more apt title is '10 totally impractical bikes that mostly don't exist beyond renders!'.
Yanko is click bait titled listicles. Don't support low effort trash.
Ontario’s police watchdog says the former deputy chief of the Ottawa police force has been charged with sexually assaulting a woman more than a decade ago.
My hope is that this will give the Liberal party the courage to look for new leadership. Trudeau was great when he started, but a decade in the spotlight has worn him down and tainted his brand (fairly or unfairly).
The Liberals under Trudeau are trying to get elected on a platform of 'more of the same' when a lot of Canadians are unhappy. A new leader, with a new vision and a solid platform could have a fighting chance against PP. But under Trudeau the party feels like they've given up.
Totally agree.
Moderating models for safety is a problematic idea. Prusa then bears liability in the event that a model fails. 3D printing works only because it's the person who physically makes the print who has the ultimate responsibility to determine if it is safe and fit for purpose.
If you don't like the competitions, don't take part. Personally I view them as a nice way to encourage the community to share ideas.
Someone needs to fix the dysfunctional relationship between the RCMP and the government. Trudeau may not be the man to do it, writes Justin Ling.
As a general rule, I hate opinion pieces as I feel that they are a major contributor to our slide towards 'facts don't matter' US style political rhetoric. That said, I thought this was an interesting and fact driven piece that if anything was too easy on the RCMP. Sharing a journalist's request for information with the union, without permission, definitely struck me as a serious lapse in judgment.
Black man who borrowed father's BMW questioned, forcibly arrested outside home
tl;dr - Black man driving his dad's BMW is detained for being suspicious because he doesn't look like the sort of person who drives that car. He is subject to a rough arrest as his mother watches. Gatineau police insist there was no racial profiling.
A woman is pushing the Law Enforcement Review Board to impose a tougher penalty on a Calgary police officer who sexually harassed her.
If a health care worker did something like this, they would be facing discipline from their professional college and would face massive ramifications. If I, as a consulting professional, send unprofessional messages to a client and they contacted my boss, I would be out of a job instantly. 20 hours pay forfeiture is a joke in my opinion. The police need to be held to a higher standard than the general public, but seemingly face no actual discipline regardless of how egregious their behaviour is.
Weird diagonal lines and ringing on Ankermake M5
Just printed this plant pot and the quality is absolutely trash. It's a large print (150mmx150mmx150mm) but printed using my normal settings. It's solid wall - 4-5 perimeters thick. Sliced in Prusaslicer 2.6.1 and printed on an Ankermake M5. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Looking for a Tail Light that doesn't suck
So I commute year round in Calgary and that means cold and dark. I can't seem to find a tail light that isn't disposable garbage and will actually hold up to a few years of use.
Yes you can basically buy tail lights in bulk off Amazon - but I hate tossing dead junk in the trash. I would rather pay more for a light that lasts.
My perfect light would use replaceable 18650 (or whatever size) lithium ion cells, or at least have USB-C with pass-through charging (so that I can run it off an external battery in a pinch).
For front lights I use Outbound Lighting and they are perfect - long battery life, great performance, pass-through charging, works in the cold. Unfortunately Outbound doesn't make tail lights. I've begged.
So anyone have a tail light that they LOVE?
Nothing Phone (2) coming to Canada
MobileSyrup says the Nothing Phone (2) is coming to Canada.
I'll admit it - I'm intrigued. I normally go with Pixel devices for stock Android so I'm a little hesitant about Nothing's implementation, but the device itself looks pretty cool.
One of our foster kittens is just a couple of extra toes away from the world record
This is Aros (and brother Durin). Aros has polydactyly and by our count has 25 toes - 7 more than normal. He has six toes on each hind foot and left forefoot, and a whopping seven on his right forefoot. Nail trims should be fun with this little guy!
The bonus digits don't seem to bother him in the slightest and living in Canada, I'm sure he'll appreciate the extra floatation in the snow if he ever manages to sneak out during winter - because those feet are like snowshoes!
Shelters are packed right now so PLEASE consider a shelter animal rather than some bougie breed that is likely to have a ton of health issues.
Also - if you can't commit to a pet long term but could foster a kitter or pupper, it's a super rewarding experience. Our shelter covers everything from vet visits to food to even toys so it's a zero cost way to bring a fuzz-ball into your home and out of a cramped shelter while they look for their forever home!
Fostering four orphan kittens - cuteness overload
Fostering four orphaned goofballs. Eating is a messy, full body experience...
