FCC mandates all mobile phones in the US to be compatible with hearing aids
  • Can’t speak to PC UI, but for the web, “public good” entities and government institutions have to follow ADA guidelines on usability for differently-abled people. Weird, because the law says this but does not get specific on what exactly must be done to be compliant. The gist is that those entities are “supposed to” follow WCAG, although those are only guidelines and not mandates.

I work in healthcare and our org, although we made best effort to make our site accessible for screen readers, color impairment issues, etc, we were still sued (lawsuit was a bit of a shakedown) and are now working to address and remediate each item in the suit with a third party. We want to be fully compliant but as of yet, there isn’t a “set of rules” that we can all look to make these sites compliant (basically just a bunch of suggestions). Weird times we live in.

  • WordPress bans WP Engine from sponsoring user groups.
  • Not sure about at work, since the decision is out of my hands (I can only recommend), but at the moment if it were up to me, I think I would go with Strapi (headless CMS) plus something like Hugo (static site generator).

  • WordPress bans WP Engine from sponsoring user groups.
  • I work in healthcare in and manage a portfolio of public-facing sites, all on WordPress and all hosted on WPE. Also do occasional volunteer work and side projects where WordPress has been a good fit, depending on the project. Have been happy with WPE’s customer service and product offering and ideologically speaking, I think Matt is in the wrong here and has already done irreparable harm to the Wordpress project.

Due to the chaos one person has been able to cause on such a large open source project, I will be abandoning my use of it in all future personal projects and our organization is also now discussing replacing it completely for all of our sites.

What a waste of effort for a whole lot of people and a shame for the project to fall apart like this.

  • Matt Mullenweg and WordPress Hijack the Advanced Custom Fields Plugin
  • Yep - I’ve done both volunteer/free and professional work with WordPress, but after all of this drama that Matt has caused, I’ll be abandoning the platform for all future work. Too much uncertainty that happened at the drop of a hat, due to one person’s actions. Cant justify ever recommending that to anyone and feel like I’m presenting a sustainable and supportable option. Bummer too, since for certain use cases, it checks a lot of boxes.

  • Also, give me three fingers of the best Scotch you have and dilute it with ice cubes please
  • Some (not all) Scotches can open up a bit with a little water, but would disagree about ice. You’re basically turning everything down with ice.

    BUT

I think everyone should be allowed to order their whisky the way they like it and enjoy in peace. Ice, water, beer chaser, soda, whatever. I don’t care for those things but get as crazy as you want with no regrets.

  • What are politically progressive Tesla owners doing with their vehicles now that Musk is transparently in bed with the opposite end of the political spectrum?
  • Roughly the situation I'm in. I inherited an older model S when my dad passed away last year, and it's old enough that it has free charging for life. So free car plus free charging (and less than 30k miles on it) equals "hard to pass up." That said, their customer service has been consistently very terrible (have had it in twice plus a home visit to fix the charge port door not opening - ridiculous especially for such an essential piece of the vehicle), lots of very annoying little issues due to bad software and hardware engineering, and other expensive issues that cropped up due to poor product design and engineering (touchscreen got bubbles in it and had to be replaced - apparently they selected some laptop-type screen to use which can't tolerate the heat that's typically reached in a car sitting outside). Would never buy one and have even with the free charging, am still considering selling it to get away from the brand (let alone all of the whacko issues with the CEO).

  • Amazon Layoffs: Tech Firm To Cut 14,000 Manager Positions By 2025, Says Report
  • Beg to differ. I work in healthcare and we just got a new manager for our 2 teams (web dev and interfaces) and she has very little technical knowledge. It’s embarrassing the amount of times I’ve literally had to explain the difference between GitHub and VSCode (yes, I know they aren’t even remotely the same thing). Morale is super low. I assume she was hired because she was a “good middle manager,” but I fail to see how that’s possible.

  • does cross posting count as spam and reposting?
  • My hot take is that I don’t like cross posting or reposting. I subscribe to communities for the unique content and perspectives that each one provides and to see a user posting the same thing to five different communities for whatever reason (getting upvotes seems to be the only reason) seems silly to me. Let go of the ego a bit and this need for internet points.

Hike and fly series by FlyBubble

Been enjoying these hike and fly videos in the UK by one of the FlyBubble gang. He’s done Scottish highlands and North Wales - very chill and well produced and good mix of hiking, nature, light alpinism, and PG with light gear.

Are presidential elections even the responsibility of the executive branch?

Is “maintaining the integrity of the presidential election” even fall under the responsibilities of POTUS? Wouldn’t that be more of the judicial’s or legislative’s wheelhouse? If it’s not, doesn’t that completely invalidate Trump’s argument that he was acting under his presidential duties?

Think this qualifies as the scariest speedflying video I've seen yet.

    Zipper repair

Great video on how to fix a bunch of zipper issues. Handy to have on hand for harness, rucksack, and concertina bag zipper problems. Implemented one of the fixes in the video (took less than a minute) and that fix is still going strong after a year.

What registrars do people like nowadays?

For personal projects, I've favored gandi.net for many years, but I'm trying to get a few candidates together for the organization I work for. Not a fan of GoDaddy, NetworkSolutions, or many of the all-in-one web host / registrar / app hosting / whateverelse sites.

Hoping there are a few modern alternatives out there that I haven't seen yet. We had all of our domains on Google Domains, but since they got bought by Squarespace, I'm surveying our options.

New Bodganfly pod made for volbiv

Looks like super lightweight, loads of pockets, and 70L total storage volume. Might be a good rival to the BV1.

Sailplane bug wipers - how they work

Not a sailplane pilot, but thought this was pretty neat. Uses the airflow to push the wiper out to the end of the wing and then either a simple electric motor or a hand crank to bring it back towards the fuselage.

    Stopper knot

Have been fiddling with removing the brummels from my speed system and wanted a nice stopper knot for the larkshead to grab onto. Hope this benefits someone else.

    Security camera with web embed

Looks like none of the consumer-grade security cameras (Nest, Arvo, Ring, etc) support being able to embed the feed on a web page anymore. I think many of them never supported it, but looks like since Google bought Nest, they are slowly stripping features out of that one.

I'm looking to set up a security camera or two in a park-like area (it's a parking lot and landing area for a freeflight club), and am looking for something that checks the following boxes:

    • Ideally, a solution that doesn't need an external computer (a full blown machine that's running software that might have to be restarted by a human on-site; a self-contained hardware device or rack mounted solution that would start all necessary services up after a power outage or other failure would be fine).
    • Video would be ideal, but if there's something that would take snapshots every few seconds, that's acceptable.
    • Stream (or photos) would need to be publicly-accessible. A webpage embed would be ideal, but not something where a whole bunch of people have to use a dedicated mobile app to access it.

I looked at some of Unifi's product offerings, but hard to tell if some combination of their cameras and routers would accomplish that. Anyone put something like this together recently and can recommend anything?
