Posted this on beehaw/games a few days ago, but wanted to share the amount of dust inside a PS3 that I bought O_O

The prior owner was a teenager, so you can do the math about why it was this bad. But I also have to say that Sony clearly made so many design flaws with the "fat" PS3. The shape of it was clearly meant for aesthetics, and not function. There are so many hidden places for dust to collect, and the airflow pattern isn't optimal. These things are notorious for overheating.

Even after I cleaned it and replaced the thermal paste, it still runs pretty loud.

Unfortunately, a ton of games are still locked on the PS3 and not even available on PS+ Premium streaming, so having a PS3 is one of the only ways to enjoy those games (besides emulation).

Bugs/Issues/Requests
  • Djokkum, did you see that Beehaw just defederated with us?

Edit: I just saw your post about the bot signups a few days ago. I think this was the driving force behind the defederating. But it sounds like you already have resolved the issue with removals and captcha. Beehaw said in their post that admins can email them to discuss, so maybe you can persuade them to refederate us since you've taken countermeasures against the bots?

  • Is this the golden age to purchase Xbox 360 games?

I recently got an Xbox Series X, and naturally I wanted to go back and enjoy some of the 360 titles that I played as a teen. For once, I feel like I did not miss the boat on buying these games at a decent price. Everybody talks about how cheap SNES and N64 carts used to be, but I wasn't into retro gaming then, so all I've ever known is absurd prices.

I just bought Final Fantasy XIII for $0.99 on eBay (plus shipping). Ninety nine cents! Is this the norm? I know FF13 was controversial, but overall it's a great title to own, pretty unique since Final Fantasy is usually Playstation exclusive.

    I might just start a 360 collection.

Does the Defederation of lemmy.world With Beehaw Make It So That Beehaw Posts Will Not Show In My lemmy.world Feed?
  • If you truly want to see "everything", it's best to join a small instance that is federated with everybody. I joined an instance called Rammy. It's nothing special in and of itself, just one guy nice enough to host the server. But I can interact with Beehaw, Lemmy.ml, Lemmy.world, Lemmy NSFW, all of it. So if that's what you want, join a small instance.

  • Is there no way to play FF13 on the PS4 or PS5?

I don't know if I am overlooking something in the store. Almost every single FF game is playable somehow or another on the PS5, but can FF13 not run on it, either as a purchased title or through PS+ streaming?

Final Fantasy 16: 10 Things You NEED TO KNOW
  • They're still having issues and I get a 404 error when I click on it 😞

  • Sail the High Seas of Literature with FREE eBook Downloads - No Loot Required!
  • Just to give perspective on how rapacious the textbook industry has become:

When I was in nursing school (graduated in May), even though I "purchased" the textbooks, it turned out what I purchased was only a license to access the textbook through their proprietary e-reader app for the semester. As soon as the semester was over, my access to the textbook disappeared.

This is the model that the textbook companies want. No more reselling used books to even recover a small portion of funds.

This is why piracy of textbooks is thriving.

  • A Plague Tale: Requiem is a dark masterpiece (no spoilers)

I'm really stunned after playing this game, it's hard to believe that it was made by a somewhat indie development studio (Asobo).

The last time I finished something and felt this emotionally exhausted was when I watched Apocalypse Now for the first time. This game really captures the brutality and despair of the middle ages in a way that more fantasy-oriented games do not.

Of course, this game does have some fantasy elements, but for the most part it takes you on a journey with two children who have to make their way through a ruthless and uncaring world, constantly having their childhood ripped away and their faith in adults and humanity shattered.

At the same time, this game is absolutely beautiful. I would put the visuals up against any game, period. You feel like you're there in medieval France.

I need to go play some happy Mario games after this one.

If you are an adult who handles depressing and dark things okay, and you have even a passing interest in the middle ages, I can't recommend this game enough (play the first one first though--Plague Tale Innocence). The core gameplay is a stealth game, but whether or not you like that style, the game is worth it and transcends the genre IMO.

Why are custom roms so much device specific while any linux distro works on any pc?
  • And just to add to that, anyone who has installed Linux before knows that everything isn't guaranteed to just work out of the box. Laptop WiFi cards, for example, frequently have driver issues. So it's not quite as simple as OP is saying, even with PCs.

  • Getting started with Lemmy
  • If a community doesn't yet exist on the Fediverse for a given topic, can we create a community on Rammy, or is community creation limited to the admin?

  • Is anyone here?
  • Thank you!

  • Do you think people will try to assemble a complete collection of the PS4/Xbox/Switch library, like is common with retro consoles?

I've often wondered this. With the sheer volume of titles on modern consoles, is it even possible to have a complete collection of the library? Especially with something like the Switch, where there are also a shit ton of shovelware titles out there, not only digital but physical shovelware as well from Limited Run Games.

Part of me thinks it's not going to happen, and the other part of me knows that I'm probably severely underestimating collectors' skills, resources, and obsession.

If you Post the Link to this Lemmy page you get now this on reddit.
  • This is actually hilarious that Reddit is so threatened by Lemmy that they are actively trying to intimidate people from posting a link. What a joke.

  • Why lemmy has no content except about Reddit?
  • Did they block Lemmygrad? I thought they just blocked Lemmy.ml and Lemmy.world. you may be right though.

I wouldn't try to make too much sense out of Beehaw's decisions. I don't quite understand what they're going for. Regardless of whether or not they blocked Lemmygrad, I agree with you that there's a contradiction inherent in the whole idea of having a community about socialism (a topic about overthrowing the current political/economic order) but saying to "be nice" lol

  • The Steam subreddit has been forced back open.
  • I am ready and armed with Thomas the Tank Engine memes.

  • Why lemmy has no content except about Reddit?
  • Beehaw added [email protected] if you want to talk about leftist topics, but the rules there are that you have to be nice to everybody. It is basically the opposite of the tenor of r/socialism, so take that under advisement.

I say this as a passive observer who has no skin in the game one way or another, I'm not a socialist.

  • domination is inevitable
  • I like lemmy.world because it seems to be neutral and doesn't have heavy handed moderators. Communities are allowed to bloom and grow. It's scalable.

I respect what Beehaw wants to do, but their goals are not realistic if they want to be a platform of any significant size.

So far I also like the communities I've seen on Lemmy.ml, but there have been a lot of technical/server issues.

  • Thoughts on PS Plus tiers?
  • How was the streaming performance for the classics?

I've never streamed a game before.

  • Thoughts on PS Plus tiers?

I am trying to decide which of the PS+ tiers to buy; specifically, I'm debating between "extra" and "premium". The Premium tier alludes to there being more games, but it's really hard to find a venn diagram somewhere with specifically which high profile games are in Premium but not Extra.

Is premium worth the extra? I'm really only interested in playing bundled games. I wouldn't use any of the other features.

    In-ear headphone solution?

I have pretty thick glasses, and all of the over-ear headphones end up pinching the glasses arms into my face and hurts.

Does anyone know of in-ear headphones that work well for the Xbox? Google isn't very trustworthy because of how much SEO there is; I have no idea who actually wrote various reviews.

Just curious if any community members here have good in-ear headphones for the Xbox. I wish I could use my AirPods, but Xbox doesn't have Bluetooth (and neither does PS5! Somehow the Switch has them both beat in this regard...)

    Any refugees from r/medicine here?

I would love to transplant (pun intended) the r/medicine community over to the Fediverse. So far this seems like the largest community, but I'm curious if there are other medical professionals here, laypersons interested in medical news, or what?
