Grand Blue Season 2 announced
  • Glad to see my favorite diving anime make a return

  • Don’t Ask AI Which Rocks You Can Lick.
  • I'd argue in the states you can lick those you really shouldn't because it will instantly freeze your tongue off

  • Star Wars Outlaws sales were 'softer than expected,' so Ubisoft is slamming the release-it-on-Steam button early [will come to Steam in November]
  • A) funny how that works with Steam everytime. "We don't need Steam" > sales plummet > "Release on Steam in 60 days"

    B) I don't think releasing the game on Steam will save them here, from what I've seen it's just a bad game plain and simple. It will maybe fill the gap a bit but probably not by enough to actually achieve the sales numbers they would like to see.

  • Network Switch
  • I somewhat disagree that you have to be a data hoarder for 10G to be worth it. For example I've got a headless steam client on my server that has my larger games installed (all in all ~2TB so not in data hoarder territories) which allows me to install and update those games at ~8 Gbit/s. Which in turn allows me to run a leaner Desktop PC since I can just uninstall the larger games as soon as I don't play them daily anymore and saves me time when Steam inevitably fails to auto update a game on my Desktop before I want to play it.

Arguably a niche use case but it exists along side other such niche use cases. So if someone comes into this community and asks about how best to implement 10G networking I will assume they (at least think) have such a use case on their hands and want to improve that situation a bit.

  • [DISC] Kaette Kudasai! Akutsu-san - Chapter 186
  • I'm starting to wonder whether the Editor kicked the Author in the butt to finally get the plot going, not that I'm complaining about it. I'd normally agree with @[email protected]'s assessment that they'll get cheap rent from Ooya-san but I suspect she'll die from high blood sugar levels when she hears about this (I know I almost did)

  • Network Switch
  • Personally going 10G on my networking stuff has significantly improved my experience with self-hosting, especially when it comes to file transfers. 1G can just be extremely slow when you're dealing with large amounts of data so I also don't really understand why people recommend against 10G here of all places.

  • Network Switch
  • Yeah they definitely could have been quicker with the patches but as long as the patches come out before the articles they are above average with how they handle CVE's, way too many companies out there just not giving a shit whatsoever.

  • Network Switch
  • If I buy a switch and that thing decides to give me downtime in order to auto update I can tell you what lands on my blacklist. Auto-Updates absoultely increase security but there are certain use cases where they are more of a hindrance than a feature, want proof? Not even Cisco does Auto-Update by default (from what I've managed to find in this short time neither does TrendNet which you've been speaking well of). The device on its own deciding to just fuck off and pull down your network is not in any way a feature their customers would want. If you don't want the (slight) maintenance load that comes with an active switch do not get one, get a passive one instead.

  • Network Switch
  • So first of all I see no point in sharing multiple articles that contain the same copy-pasted info, one of those would have been enough. That aside, again, patches were made available before the vulnerability was published and things like MikroTik not pushing Updates being arguably more of a feature since automatic updates cause network downtime via a reboot and that would be somewhat problematic for networking equipment. Could they have handled that better? Yes, you can almost always handle vulnerabilities better but their handling of it was not so eggregious as to warrant completely avoiding them in the future.

  • Network Switch
  • Can you elaborate on how their response was lacking? From what I found the stable branch had a patch for that vulnerability available for several months before the first report while the lts branch had one available a week before the first article (arguably a brief period to wait before releasing news about the vulnerability but not unheard of either).

MikroTik also offers a 2 year warranty since they legally have to, no idea what you're on about there. Also also not sure what you think they sell other than networking because for the life of me I can't find anything other than networking related stuff on their website.

  • YouTube has found a new way to load ads | AdGuard Blog
  • Torrenting was created precisely to solve the bandwidth problem of monolithic servers. You very obviously have no idea how torrents (or PeerTube for that matter) works.

  • Rumour: Concord Cost $400 Million, Sony Believed It Was the 'Future of PlayStation'
  • Baldur's Gate is a prime example for people not actually being bothered by the "woke" stuff all that much. It just gets the blame when the product turns out shit because it's an easy tool to explain why everything else about a game sucks.

The mechanics are bad? They must've spent more time arguing how to include pronouns than how to make the game fun.

Buggy? Obviously revisions to make the game more inclusive had more priority.

Are those speculations true? Idk but stuff like the leaked Sweet Baby Inc. talks about how to include more progressive aspects in a game make it seem believable enough for most people.

  • Rumour: Concord Cost $400 Million, Sony Believed It Was the 'Future of PlayStation'
  • There is a (from my guess) sizable chunk of soulslike fans who want to play Bloodborne but won't get a console just to do it. The noise around it is likely as loud as it is because it is the only Fromsoft soulslike released after the initial success of Dark Souls that is not available on PC, the other games all either got a PC port (Dark Souls 1-3) or released on PC from the start (Sekiro, Elden Ring)

  • The Wobbly Future of the Hard Disk Drive Industry
  • You mean they don't already do that?

  • ich😔🚬iel
  • Rührei? Pft, ich hab mir mal um 3 Uhr morgens Spaghetti Carbonara gekocht

  • Hypnosis
  • Where serialization?

  • “Fascists”: Elon Musk responds to proposed fines for disinformation on X
  • Earnings is incoming money before any expenditures

  • Meta’s AI is scraping users’ photos and posts. Europeans can opt out, but Australians cannot
  • I mean they already take part in the Eurovision so why not? Additional bonus: people will have an even harder time differentiating Austria and Australia

  • How much money would it take for you to never listen to your favourite artist again?
  • oh boy that would be one hard sell. Probably would need 500k or more to justify never listening to them again

  • Survey Results

I've let the survey run for long enough now I suppose (at least I'm not getting any new responses) so I'm making this post with the "results". If anyone is interested in the raw data I'll post it but for now I'll just focus on the conclusion I've drawn from it.

For the most part responses only varied slightly but most of the questions were only there to help make a decision about the core question: What do you want to happen with this instance now?. The responses to which varied a lot compared to the other questions.

There were some votes against opening up the instance to other series discussions but I myself and the majority of votes are in favor so that's what will happen. However I really dislike seeing empty discussion threads so there will be some rules in place so this doesn't end up like a spam machine. As is with all things in life these are subject to change.

#1: There must be at least 3 users interested in regular discussions for a series to create a community for it here. There should be some regular volume of discussion for the series and 3 core users should facilitate that.

Note: If there already are discussion or fan art posts for a series on the Fediverse feel free to provide some of them to show that the newly created community would not just rot in a corner.

#2: If the series does not have weekly chapters there should be some form of plan for how to structure this so there is regular activity.

There is little sense in using a community only for volume discussions and nothing else those could just as well take place in [email protected]. As such there should at least be some discussion in between volumes (discussions about characters, fan art, whatever really)

Note: If the series does not release on J-Novel Club please be aware that @[email protected] will be unable to automatically create posts for it. In those cases threads need to be manually created every week.

If anyone is interested in a series and thinks they can meet these 2 rules please message me either here or via Matrix (@neshura:neshweb.chat) so we can discuss the details.

Additionally I'll post a list of links to any volume or chapter/part discussion threads to the weekly thread over at [email protected]. It's something I should have done with the PrePub discussions for Ascendance of a Bookworm as well but I didn't think of it until now.

[DISC] Please Go Home, Akutsu-san! - Ch. 185
  • Man I was just wondering where this thread was.

Lovely to see Akutsu get on her friends' nerves with her lovey-dovey behaviour, even more lovely to see them suffer through it and support her. Slightly related: 18+ Spinoff wen?

The author seemingly kicked the plot into gear recently, now my only complaint is that the chapters are too short and/or too infrequent. Which as far as problems with Manga go is a pretty good problem to have.

As such I (with input from ludrol, btw thanks for always being there for me to push decisions onto) have compiled a survey about that topic. Before I get into this I apologize for giving you all a heart attack. Actually no, I know what I am doing with that title, suffer!

Unfortunately the main story of Ascendance of a Bookworm released its last Pre-Pub chapter last week and with it a stop to the very regular weekly discussion threads. Admins (not mods) here are already swinging around the content-removal-hammer

Check the modlog for proof, a discussion post about moving this instance to an instance that shan't be named now got removed for "linking to instance featuring pedo content".

Ironically that exact possibility was reason for the discussion in the first place so seeing it happen this quickly is a bit funny.

Not sure how best to go about linking to said instance since it seems to get your content removed. DM's would be the only solution I guess but not sure if those are checked as well.

PSA: Instance Update to 0.19 on Wednesday

The initial hiccups with Federation seem to be resolved with 0.19.1-rc.1. Since I also managed to test the new Version of the Mestionora Bot (it should now actually post Part 2 and Part 3 Manga discussions in parallel instead of only Part 3, hooray) I will update the instance after PrePub discussions die down a bit.

Expected Timeframe is Wednesday 16:00 UTC - Wednesday 18:00 UTC.

During the Update changes to the expected downtime can be checked on status.bookwormstory.social.

If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask away.

Incident Report XSS Attack on lemmy.world

Last night the instance lemmy.world suffered a JavaScript injection attack. The attack set out to steal login cookies of users upon visiting infected threads, primarily targeting admins.

    Potentially Affected Data

    • E-Mail address stolen and/or changed (if provided in user settings)
    • Password changed

    Mitigations

Malicious comments have been replaced by a removal message. I have deployed the UI hotfix and @[email protected] has deleted all Custom Emoji until it is clear whether those are safe to use. Additionally all login sessions have been invalidated as a safety precaution as well, any cookies that were stolen are now rendered useless.

    Conclusion

So far it does not seem like this instance was affected.

If you are not using bookwormstory.social and your instance is not on UI Version 0.18.2-rc.1 please be aware that you are likely still at risk of the attack, please check for any announcements of your instance administrators.

    Blocked Instance: threads.net

I have decided to block Meta's Fediverse platform threads.net. The three reasons pushing me to do so are:

    • Meta's known history of the Embrace-Extend-Extinguush playbook (XMPP)
    • Meta's disturbing data collection practices when it comes to threads.
    • I don't trust Meta to keep their platform properly moderated. Especially since large parts of the fediverse already defederated, reducing the number of independent moderators checking over their content.

Edit: This is preventitive, threads.net does not offer ActivityPub support currently but has announced plans to do so in the future.
