Can We Make Bicycles Sustainable Again?

Cycling is the most sustainable form of transportation, but the bicycle is becoming increasingly damaging to the environment. The energy and material used for its production go up while its life expectancy decreases.

    A great read+great magazine.

TL;DR: Old bikes last way longer than new bikes. From a production standpoint, steel bikes have a smaller carbon footprint than aluminum or carbon frame bikes. Conventional bikes use fewer consumables over their usable life than electric bikes. Among electric bikes, cargo bikes use the most resources to run and maintain.

    Should we terraform Mars?
  • No. Mars is an inhospitable wasteland that will never be truly suited for humans due to the differences in size. Our planet is currently turning into a fucking wasteland and anyone who thinks that they can just create a new planet is delusional. Our planet is also still viable for many more billions of people if we could just take care of it! Things like permaculture are far more sustainable for larger populations. In a few hundred years, once Elon is long dead and forgotten, and if we can somehow be living in a form of a sustainable society, fine. (Also as far as terraforming planets go, if we were thinking about ever doing something like this we should be looking at venus, not earth. It's so similar to earth in terms of size that it's often called our sister planet. It also may have supported life sometime in the past.)

TL;DR: Hell no, for the next 500-1000 years and until our planet is livable.

    Encrypted Rich text

Looking for collaborators to create a new instance of Lemmy (current technology plan, subject to change). Among other things, this instance will differ from existing ones by having a self-governing structure. Check out the rough draft linked below to learn about our vision for this community. No specific skills needed, but please read through the concept outline before getting in touch via DM or comments. Join us in creating a unique and innovative platform. Currently we have one other person helping and another 2 who may be interested. Would love if you could add to that list :)

Looking for collaborators to create a new instance of Lemmy. Among other things this instance will differ from existing ones by having a self-governing structure. Check out the very rough draft linked below to learn about my current vision for this community. Much on the doc will change based on other people's ideas. This community's goal is for it to belong to the community. No specific skills needed, but please read through the concept outline before getting in touch. Any type of contribution is amazing. You just have to be interested. Join me in creating a unique and innovative platform.

WIP map for an isolated part of my world

Still WIP but these are a small group of islands far off from the rest of the world I've built. They're going to have their own unique culture and I'm going to run a ttrpg campaign in which their contacted, invaded and attempted colonized by the rest of the world. I'll post an update when the map is done.

Yes, I accidentally drew Europe on the island to the right 🤷.

] A list of companion plants for all your ecological fun

Symbiotic/companion plants are pretty cool and can be executed really well into worldbuilding.

Where do you organize your worldbuilding?

I used to use obsidian but I found myself lacking motivation and becoming easily distracted when looking at the computer. Now, I do everything in a notebook. I find that my thoughts just flow far easier.

How do you come up with names for places in your world.

    (copy+paste from a reply elsewhere)

As for the names I have a whole (overly complicated system). Basically each language in my world is a mix between multiple real world dead languages. I use chatgpt or open assistant (ik that using ai in worldbuilding is controversial but all the names are still mine) to generate words in the dead languages then smash them together. Sometimes i’ll have a word or phrase that I have it translate and then combine and shrink until it’s one word. To me, this is easier than conlanging but still original and fun.
