Bluey "The Sign" episode discussion
  • Longdog on DJ laptop. Edit: DJ is the busker.

Also, I laughed out loud when Bandit was putting Bluey to bed and they cut to Chilli putting Bingo to bed and she was buried under a mountain of stuffed animals.

  • Though I agree that skeuomorphs are generally concrete rather than abstract representations, ignoring the obsolescence aspect means that almost any design element that looks like a concrete object (however stylized it may be) would then be a skeuomorph, right?

Your camera app icon that looks like a camera lens - skeuomorph? I'd say no because cameras still have lenses.

When you use your camera app and your phone speaker plays a sound that mimics an SLR shutter clicking even though your phone's camera doesn't use a shutter curtain - skeuomorph? Yes, it mimics something familiar from a previous design no longer necessary in the current design.

I am a bit of a word nerd and recognize that words can change in meaning over time, but I've always understood skeuomorph to be in line with my usage. Can anyone point me to an alternate definition?

  • Aaargh....my eyes......my eyes......
  • I know this is /c/Progammerhumor, but I wanted to pull on this thread a little bit for my own edification. I'm a Python guy and have been a while, but I've dabbled in other languages. The screenshot says "MonoBehaviour" which makes me assume this is mono or a .Net-like language (you know what happens when you assume).

If your player health is a float, would mono or .Net have an issue comparing the float with integer zero "0"? I mean, it seems like floating point precision may make it impossible for it to ever "equal" integer zero, but it also seems like the code isn't accounting for that precision error.

    Am I overthinking this?

  • Honest question - what about these are skeuomorphic? I mean, I know that the Save button icon being a floppy disk is skeuomorphic because we don't save our files on floppies anymore, but what about these are no longer necessary to the concept?

  • TIL the adjective 'daily' in the lord's prayer is actually written in the original Greek as *epiousion*, which occurs nowhere else in known history
  • I've heard this as a reference to the bread that was given to the Israelites in the wilderness - manna. In Exodus, the Israelites are instructed to gather and prepare it each day. In the exegesis of that connection, I believe it is Jesus encouraging believers to trust in God for his provision daily.

  • Why are blender docs and related advice either horrendously outdated or plain wrong?
  • I'm sorry you had that experience. When I started really learning Blender (back in the 2.37ish days), there weren't video tutorials for everything. But the piece of advice that really helped from the resources that were available (shout-out to Blender 3D: Noob to Pro) was to read the manual in its entirety.

I'm not sure how practical that is nowadays, but the Blender 3D: Noob to Pro eBook still pushes a "Know before making" approach. I hang out on the Blenderartists Support forum and frequently point people to the relevant manual page for whatever feature they are stumped by or whichever limitation is explained on the Cycles vs. Eevee page, etc. I'm willing to offer you one-on-one help if you'd like, but I do my best to take a "teach a man to fish" approach that requires effort on the other end as well. DM me if you wanna chat, or post in the Blenderartists Support forum and I'll jump in there.

  • Why are blender docs and related advice either horrendously outdated or plain wrong?
  • Hey, @Mandy. I know you gave the example of the knife tool and cut-through, and in another response, you said you were struggling with everything, but can you be more specific about what is wrong or outdated? I know that every new version may tweak the settings/visuals a little bit, but the manual text is usually up-to-date.

  • What are your top 5 favorite BAD movies of all time?
  • Oh, I get what happened! You're mixing up Cemetery Man (Rupert Everett is the caretaker of a cemetery where folks come back from the dead and he has to re-kill them in an Italian art-horror existential dark comedy) with Dead Alive (The Lord of the Rings' own Peter Jackson's gross out horror comedy where folks die from the bite of the Sumatran Rat Monkey only to return as semi-sentient zombies culminating in some magnificently over-the-top gore/monster set pieces).

I think they are both great (different flavors of the same subject), and both very watchable.

If you enjoyed some of the goofy/gorier parts of Dead Alive, I'd recommend Fist of Jesus - a short film where Jesus' resurrection power goes awry and...zombies. It borrows heavily from Dead Alive, but the gags are still pretty solid. https://youtu.be/GuKV2Z3eYTY
