Google’s greenhouse gas emissions jump 48% in five years
  • But the revenue roughly doubled and profit/share price more than doubled, so it's all good :) (estimated based on this data)

I say this mostly sarcastically, but there also is a component of truth to it. It really shouldn't be surprising that a rapidly growing company has increasing emissions. The question should mostly be whether or not these resources were being used to produce something of value.

I imagine that right now at least for LLMs most people will answer this question with no, but only time will tell if that changes

  • Verkehrsministerkonferenz: Deutschlandticket in Gefahr

  • Historian who predicted 9 of the last 10 election results says Democrats shouldn't drop Joe Biden
  • the only way another candidate can be successful is if Biden himself drops out and endorses (and indeed continues to campaign for) them.

And he had 4 years to decide on and build up a successor, but chose to not do so. And neither did the democratic party.

His age and the related issues can't be a surprise to anyone, so i really don't see why there should be a sudden change in direction.

  • Tax The Rich

  • Tax The Rich

  • Tax The Rich

  • Google, Snap, Meta and many others are "quietly" changing privacy policies to allow for AI training | It is sneaky and possibly illegal, according to the FTC
  • But are those notifications and pop ups directly saying something like "from now on we will start to train ai on your information"?

Or is is one of the hundredth change of terms and conditions that people usually just skip, which mentions the major change in some fine print. Or a pop up designed with dark patterns to influence people into just accepting without actual informed consent?

  • Apple is working to make iPhone 16 battery removal easier to comply with EU regulations
  • Idk waterproofing/resistance is a nice feature to have, even if it's just for the peace of mind. There are more instances where your phone might get wet. Heavy rain, spilling something on it (maybe even in a bag where it'll be exposed to it for longer). Accidentally falling or getting pushed into water.

But I guess mostly the peace of mind aspect e.g. when using it near water. Water damage is an unplanned accident, battery degradation is slow and doesn't have the same risk of suddenly leaving you without a phone (that serves many purposes nowadays). So that is a different kind of risk people want to have some insurance against.

However as someone else said repairability and a decent IP rating don't have to be mutually exclusive.

  • Volkswagen to invest up to $5 billion in EV maker Rivian as part of tech joint venture
  • From my understanding, ist rivian Kind of a Truck company?

I think it's split between delivery vans and SUVs. Amazon has a stake in them aswell. I think at some point they owned like 20%? Not sure how much they currently hold.

Software has to be the main draw. I am not sure how interested they are in the delivery vans, and one has to think that they have enough SUVs themself.

  • Volkswagen to invest up to $5 billion in EV maker Rivian as part of tech joint venture
  • Thanks for digging this up.

It would make sense if at least the vans would make some profit, otherwise it looks like madness (kinda still does to me) to spend this much money on getting into an industry that is actually imo not that attractive.

Even with the switch from combustion to EV, car manufacturing is still a capital intensive and low margin business. And they don't seem to go for the potential jackpot that is autonomous driving

  • Volkswagen to invest up to $5 billion in EV maker Rivian as part of tech joint venture
  • I'd like to think that I have a reasonably decent understanding of economics for a laymen, but in this case I'm a bit stumped.

Seems to me that for 5 billion dollar (+however much VW spent on their own software) you should be able to develop a good operating system for your own cars. But I guess VW somehow failed and now would rather license Rivians through this joint venture?

Is a car OS really that expensive and complex to develop? Especially when android auto and Apple car play will do a lot of the heavy lifting for most people.

Even with losses of nearly $40,000 for every vehicle it delivers, Rivian has been on a steadier footing than other EV makers that have been forced to slash prices to stimulate demand or file for bankruptcy protection.

Rivian's cash and short-term investments fell by about $1.5 billion in the first quarter to just under $8 billion.

Nearly 40k loss per vehicle? That seems insane. How has that company been going on until now? They also say that they even before this deal they had enough reserves to last until their next models release and things were moving up, but still that is seems like an absurd rate to burn cash.

I get that it sometimes makes sense for companies to burn through heaps of cash to scaley capture market share or drive out competition, but is the car manufacturing market at this point in time one where this play still makes any sense?

  • Intel Core Ultra 200V "Lunar Lake" lineup allegedly leaks out, features one Core Ultra 9 SKU - VideoCardz.com
  • Additionally here is an article mentioning some rumored launch dates:

Intel's next-generation codenamed Lunar Lake-V mobile platform for thin-and-light notebooks will be unveiled on the week of September 17 – September 24, so the company will be able to talk about the platform and notebooks at the Intel Innovation event taking place on September 24 – September 25, as noticed by @harukaze5719. At this point, it is unclear whether the Lunar Lake-V platform is similar to the Lunar Lake-MX platform with onboard LPDDR5X memory.

When it comes to Intel's next-generation codenamed Arrow Lake-S processors and Z890 platform for desktops, these will be released in October, 2024

unlocked Arrow Lake-S processors and Z890 chipset first, presumably in October, and non-K Arrow Lake-S CPUs and B860/H810 platforms later, presumably at CES 2025

  • 10 Lovecraft Stories That Need Modern Movie Adaptations
  • To be fair: from a financial perspective that sounds like the right call, even if the movie would have been interesting.

R rated horror movies just don't bring in the amount of money to sustain high budgets like that. The exception being "It" (and the sequel), but that had more mainstream appeal and also only came out years later.

Although isn't the break even number usually closer to double the budget?

  • Intel's Lunar Lake mobile CPUs reportedly delayed until the end of the year, missing the big back-to-school period
  • I have some questions regarding this article:

    • Was lunar lake actually meant to go on sale in july? I thought it was always Q3, which tracks with the also mentioned September release date. And I wouldn't call that "end of the year" like in the headline.

    • I know n3b is said to be a poor node, but if Apple used it yields should be good enough to at least have some launch if they really wanted to.

    • I am not sure how much volume AMD usually ships at release for mobile chips, and whether this will be enough to take away major market share from Intel, but I very much doubt that Qualcomm will be a significant factor in doing so (at least right now). The new snapdragon chips are nice, but aren't really a game changer release like the m1 was at the time. So I doubt consumers will suddenly abandon familiar products for them. Leaving aside that there won't be that many options with it.

Book recommendations for someone interested in political sciences

As the title suggests i am looking for book recommendations for someone wanting to learn more in the field of political science.

Either something for a more general overview or on a specific topic would be appreciated.

Thinking about switching away from TrueNAS scale to OMV

As the title says i am currently considering switching away from TrueNAS Scale.

My system has a Celeron N3160, 16gb ram, 2x18tb HDD as a zfs mirror and ssd storage for os

My usecase is mostly just as a local storage and media server with *arr stack and jellyfin. ___________________________________________

Some of the reasons why i want to switch:

    • Truenas claims a full drive for the OS, no way to partition off something

    • no automatic updates (i get why it might make sense for stability, but as a basic user i probably value the convenience higher)

    • there've been issues with truecharts breaking the ability to update and the solution seemed to be to just reinstall the applications

    • applications sometimes don't show up on start and i have to restart

    _____________________________________

Overall i think TrueNAS Scale might be excellent for some, but i am just not quite the target audience. So i just want something simple that works.

Now that Unraid supports ZFS that would be a consideration, but i don't really feel like paying (however i am not completely opposed, if its the best option).

My first idea was Proxmox, but thinking about it a bit more i probably don't need the flexibility and it just adds more levers that need adjusting.

So the current frontrunner would be OpenMediaVault for a simple NAS setup that doesn't need as much flexibility and is low maintainance. I assume the setup would be pretty straight forward and i can just import my truenas zfs pool and install whatever docker applications i want.

    _____________________

    My questions would be:

    • Is OpenMediaVault a good choice for me? Or is there anything better?

    • Any up/downsides compared to e.g. something like a simple ubuntu server?

    • Is there anything major that i would miss out on by not going with proxmox?
