I am the 11am friend
  • Me too. It's easier to just stay on a schedule rather than ruin Monday (and sometimes Tuesday) by changing when I sleep on the weekends. Plus, my dog is also on a schedule and starts looking for snuggles at about 6.

  • Penance (24/100)
  • He was worried one of them would overthrow him. Which they did, so he wasn't wrong, but I'm pretty sure he didn't chew the kids, since he ate a rock in a blanket instead of Zeus/Jupiter. Goya's depiction might've been more successful.

  • Death Valley heat melts skin off a man's feet after he lost his flip-flops in the dunes
  • I feel like if you go to Death Valley, in July, when we're having record-breaking temps all over the world, and you wear flip flops...look, I'm not saying anyone deserves to lose a foot just because they're making stupid choices, but maybe like, a toe. Because man, that is wildly stupid.

  • How are Mexicans Restaurants Europe?
  • Bad, in my experience. There's not much of it anywhere I've been, so there's not a lot of competition or authenticity. I live in a state with about 10 billion Mexican restaurants, most of which are run by actual Mexicans, though, so my standards might be skewed as far as what a normal amount of Mexican restaurants looks like.

  • What was your favorite album when you were ten years old?
  • Brandy's first album. Or TLC's. Both of those tapes got played to deaaath. But my real favorite was probably whatever mixtape my sister and I had most recently made from the radio because that shit was custom. No skips.

  • Man accused of stabbing transgender teen 18 times at Miami airport
  • That's cool and all, but they fail to detect weapons all the time. Just because airport security has never been good doesn't mean we can't be critical of them now. They constantly implement new procedures that just plain don't work beyond making air travel an even bigger hassle. I don't think Lemmy users are big on privatization ever, and no one suggested that, but this kind of failure is a pretty big deal. Our demise is still an acceptable risk, except now it's because they hire people who don't give one single rat's ass, pay them poorly, and use all kinds of things that look great on the surface but aren't effective at preventing a guy from bringing a butcher knife into the airport (at what's usually a pretty slow time of night) and very nearly succeeding at murdering someone.

  • Witness protection fbi [very serious]
  • Oh jeez, you're another one of those gangstalking people, aren't you? I know there's no way you'll take me up on this because of the paranoia, but please see a therapist. No one here is equipped to help you with this, and if it goes anything like the last time, a bunch of well-meaning people will believe you and waste their time offering advice that doesn't work because this is all in your head.

  • Do you folks use Amazon a lot, and if yes, then why? If no, then what alternatives do you prefer?
  • I haven't used it for personal stuff in years. My employer uses it for office supplies, so I've occasionally ordered work stuff, but even that is as little as possible, and only things where it won't matter if the quality is just so so, because you can't trust that you'll get the real thing anymore. Plus, I don't want to sift through 10k listings of sweatshop garbage to find the thing I'm looking for.

  • Two lifelong Republicans leave the GOP in support of trans grandchild
  • I mean, I get that, and the amount of rage I feel about the fact that Republicans never have any empathy for anyone they don't know is probably going to give me an ulcer, but this is good news. People changing their minds in response to new information is a positive thing, and we should encourage it. There are plenty of LGBTQ+ people whose families don't change their minds. That's how we end up with kids committing suicide or living on the streets. My extended family would never change their minds, and it's led to me cutting them off, and my cousin will never come out because I'm pretty sure his dad would kill him, or at least do his level best to beat him to death.

Anyway, I didn't mean for that to get that dark, but that's the reality for a lot of us. I'm going to welcome anyone trying to be better with open arms.

  • dumbass
  • I really hope he just has the worst injector in the world and this isn't permanent. If it's a face lift, it's what he deserves, but I'm not sure the rest of us should have to look at him like that forever.

  • Foods that don't have to be refrigerated/heated?

I'm going to a conference next week and while they asked everyone for dietary preferences, I don't have high hopes based on experience (sure, I'd love another "salad" that's just iceberg with no dressing!), so I'm trying to plan ahead and bring some things with me so I don't starve. Unfortunately, the hotel room doesn't have a microwave, just a mini-mini-fridge and I'm bringing my small kettle, so I mostly have to stick to things that can be stored/eaten at room temp, or prepared with just hot water. So far, I have some soy curl jerky to take to long sessions, a couple of ramen bowls, and some bread and packets of almond butter, but I'm kind of out of ideas. There is a Trader Joe's within walking distance, so I can at least grab some fruit or salad when I get a chance, but is there anything else I'm not thinking of that I should pack and/or plan to buy? The conference is a full week, so I'd prefer not to eat crap (like the ramen) the whole time if I can help it.

Now taking suggestions on what to do with soy curls

Finally sprung for the 12lb bag because we love these things. I usually make buffalo soy curls and throw them on a salad or mac and cheese, or make lemon "chicken" orzo with them, but I'm open to other suggestions from anyone else who likes them since I have enough for about the next decade.

I looked up the ones he shows in the video and basically all of them are the equivalent of 30 year old participation trophies. He's posted the video on every city fb post for days, and he calls volunteering slavery every chance he gets. There's a reason his own political party disavowed him a couple of years ago.

This is somehow one of his saner posts

This guy has been running for local office and losing every election cycle for years. His latest thing is that he is a victim the same way George Floyd was because DEI has made it hard to be a white man, I guess?

For the record, his "wife" literally left the country over a decade ago and I think his son has also moved to her country. The last picture he has with them is easily 15 years ago, so I don't think they really give a shit if anyone votes for him. Oh, also, they're Asian so he regularly refers to himself as a "person/father of color."

    How to choose a model?

I don't do much handheld gaming, but I'm going to have some overseas flights and long-ish train rides later this year, and may also be having surgery that will keep me fairly bedbound for about a month. I'm just not sure how much money it's worth spending on a deck that I likely won't use much outside of those specific cases - I bought a switch when I got covid in 2020 and used it a ton at the time but I've only used it a few times since, though I miiight use a deck a bit more just because I already have a pretty extensive steam library.

Is it better to stick to the cheapest model or is there enough of a difference that it might be worth spending a little more for a nicer one?

    Getting wild on NYE

This is one of the first kits I got really excited about and I finally grabbed it on Black Friday. I've never done buttonhole stitch and it's a lot of fun now that I have the hang of it. It's a party at my house, as you can see.

Yeah, definitely don't put any of those profits toward a living wage though. Make your employees trauma dump for the chance at a few extra bucks! Probably comes as an Amazon gift card, too.

    Considering calling this one finished

I don't know how to cross stitch (and did absolutely zero research before starting this kit), but this is a mood, especially after I realized I miscounted and put the s one space off and now have to pull it back out.

    I finally finished these two!

Well...mostly. I need to fill in a couple of gaps on the bear, but I lost my mind and decided to try to finish a whole new pattern by 10/1 so I'll have to worry about that later. I'm overall really happy with how both came out. I can see mistakes up close, but I think from a distance, they're both nice. Also, this was before ironing both, please disregard any wonky satin stitch - the thread moves when I wash off the pattern.
