Seems like it would be more effective
not likely. in the same vein of shutting down discourse using phrases like "both sides" or "whataboutism" the popular consensus with quotes is that you can cherry pick them to say anything; so it's not going to matter that it's relevant or even exactly on topic.
i shared it with you so that you can use it to remind yourself that you're doing the right thing if you should ever doubt yourself; like i do from time to time.
... That said, I’m part of many groups that the right-wing hates and is openly threatening, so feeling unsafe doesn’t feel unreasonable either.
i'm at the intersection of several groups that right wingers hate and all of them are fodder for this election when it comes to immigration; lgbt rights; the social safety net; and neuro divergence visibility. the goal is to make you feel unsafe and, to be clear, you should ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings in this country if you're any kind of minority.
How are you all holding up out there? And tips for me to deal with this better?
i'm doing okay because i've seen this playbook used multiple times since the 1980's starting with biden and now with trump. minorities have always been excellent political fodder used to invigorate voting bases for as long as elections have existed and; up until recently; it had only been used for scapegoating. starting in the 2012 election, it was used for liberal virtue signaling and now the harris campaigned has REALLY perfected it as a cudgel to attack both the left and the right. they use it against the right to show how regressive the republicans are and they use it against the left to paint them as selfish/stupid for throwing minorities under the bus.
i was scared too the first time i heard biden's anti-gay tirade in 1988 and then when clinton did anti-gay marriage in 1996 it started to dawn on me that it was a political ploy. they trot us out like show horses when they think it'll help their cause. so i think that the best tip i can give you is to read up on the history of the last 40 or so years worth of elections to help you get a broader perspective of our political system so that you can manage that fear you're carrying around inside you and also to see how the only thing that's different about it this time around is the STAGGERING amounts of difficult to trace campaign donations (thanks citizens united) and all the fuckery it's enabled.
watch out; i learned the hard way in an interview that i do this so much that i can no longer create terraform & ansible playbooks from scratch.
even a basic api call from scratch was difficult to remember and i'm sure i looked like a hack to them since they treated me as such.
i've had macbooks for work before and they work okay like windows does; but i think i'll end up with windows since i do 99% of my work in a terminal emulator with keyboard mapping customizations and re-mapping the keyboard in mac takes weeks/months of trial and error to get it right since it requires me to shift all of the other keys & their shortcuts around to get it work like it does in linux.
i've also used wsl in windows for work before too and that worked better for me since i didn't do anything extra besides copy/paste of my keyboard map. also: since i only use the laptop for work, i don't care about microsoft being evil; i'll let the infosec guys handle that.
i use a linux laptop; but then they got bought out and our new overlords won't let me get another one.
i've had it for 5 years now since i didn't want switch to mac during the last 2 refresh periods; but it's only a matter of time before it dies.
i think i'll just switch jobs when it does. lol
It Was Also Political Suicide
DEAR GOD PLEASE LET THIS BE TRUE!!!
democrats and foreigners always seem to have the same grasp of the details of the american elections and i think that's why trump and the other republicans have good chances at winning despite being so outnumbered; they know more and are better organized than the democrats.
and we also forget each time they do it; every single election cycle.
the texan gov't does the crazy things every election cycle and it's in the news every time; but we have ultra short memories when it comes to elections due to not paying attention so we're just as surprised when they do it every single election cycle as we were surprised the last 80 times they did the same thing.
past court cases have decided that the states get to control the voting processes; the federal government is powerless in this situation (except for a few extremely narrow hypothetical situations) which is why republicans are a thing still and are in charge of the rules.
it's not just the south; it's all red, purple & battleground states: 32 out of 50
i love all the fan service in lower decks; i get a new trek story plus multiple mini-trips down memory lane with every episode.
why do you have to attack me like that? lol
mine does this non-verbally; he'll wait at the entrance to a room and wait for you to acknowledge him either through eye contact or voice and then; and only then; he'll enter the room and usually with a tiny squeak of approval.
you joke, but in earlier days (circa 2002) it took my imac g3 5 days to compile the gentoo distro kernel; after day 3 i started to wonder if i was compiling the universe. lol
i love how this is 100% true and both linux acolytes and linux haters alike both agree.
too bad it's not on video
that's why they banned tiktok
that's the price i would pay if my government didn't impose tariffs to prevent people from buying them.
Those aren't my goals but I would very much like to see them.
That vast majority of information skimmers have guaranteed that the genocide is going to happen no matter what you, I, or the people who put in the time & effort do.
Likewise our political duopoly in this country is too well financed and experienced to expect it change anytime soon.
My goal is to learn how to not perpetuate & participate in the same generational violence & genocide that my ancestors in this country experienced and is now being visited upon by the gazans and at the hands of the same system and people.
One of the things I have learned so far is that no real leftist believes that voting third party is going to prevent the genocide; like me they're doing it for their own reasons so it's clear that the information skimmers are pushing a straw man that says otherwise.
The manner in which the genocide takes place is the only thing we can influence; but not in the way it's understood by the information skimmers. The actions of the Biden & Harris make it clear that they're willing to risk it all to support Israel in its goals for the genocide; despite whatever their words suggest; and Trump's ineptitude along with this demonstrated disinterest & ignorance in foreign affairs also guarantees that Israel will achieve their goals for the genocide.
The question then becomes: will the democrats be allowed to sugar coat it and give token gestures to give Israel the political room it needs to achieve their goals for the genocide past January or will the Republicans be allowed to create policies to simply ignore it; either action is still reaching the same end.
Given that this is the same system and people that my ancestors knew: I foresee a future where gazans continue to exist in native american like reservations in Israel whose populations have been genocided into numbers small enough to guarantee that they will never be able resist the boot on their collective necks ever again in the future.
I also believe that the idf's wanton destruction over generational wealth building capital like real estate; a workforce; and an economy imposes a new generational poverty that guarantees that the future surviving gazans will be controlled by Israeli government purse strings; like the native americans experience with the American government's purse strings.
In more news from Capitol Hill, lawmakers have barred the U.S. State Department from citing death toll figures provided by the Gaza Ministry of Health. Ahead of Thursday’s vote, Congress’s lone Palestinian American lawmaker, Democrat Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, read into the Congressional Record the ...
Rep. Rashida Tlaib: “But Palestinians are not just numbers. Behind these numbers are real people — mothers, fathers, sons, daughters — who have had their lives stolen from them and their families torn apart. And we should not be trying to hide it. These are innocent children and babies who have been bombed in their tents, burned alive, dismembered and deliberately starved to death. Where is our shared humanity in this chamber? There is so much anti-Palestinian racism in this chamber that my colleagues don’t even want to acknowledge that Palestinians exist at all, not when they’re alive and now not even when they’re dead. It’s absolutely disgusting. This is genocide denial.”
Bill Makes Gaza Genocide Protests Illegal
The House has passed legislation that would establish a broader definition of antisemitism for the Department of Education to enforce anti-discrimination laws.
hr-6090 will make criticizing isreal illegal including the protests. it’s already passed the the house and biden has signaled his support for it. i wonder why this isn’t on lemmy already since it’s been a thing for a month so far.
