Firefox CTO Responds On Collecting User Advertisement Data
    1. Rather than fighting against ad-tech , they're caving. If someone comes into your house to punch you and rob you everyday, do you say "let's find a solution that we're both happy with, how about you rob me and don't punch me?"

    2. We could have argued about how privacy-protecting this is, and whether it will actually prevent further intrusive tracking. Perhaps I might be persuaded to keep it. But the fact that I wasn't informed about being opted in when upgrading, and the fact that the CTO is doubling down on "users are too stupid to understand this", means they've lost any trust and/or willingness for me to listen to them. Turning this off for good.

  • Boeing accepts a plea deal to avoid a criminal trial over 737 Max crashes, Justice Department says
  • They will keep doing what they’re doing

    Wrong.

This plea deal helps them quantify the cost of safety lapses, which they didn't have before. Now they know that they'll only get fined a tiny bit, they know that it'll be worth it to cut further corners if that helps them sell maybe 5-10 more planes in total.

  • X weighs adding a downvote button to replies — but it doesn't want to emulate Reddit
  • that's fine for a small discord group but it doesn't scale. you can't be that active in moderating millions of conversations.

downvotes (and hiding downvoted comments) is a community-driven way of signaling unacceptable behavior. it largely works, except in echo chambers.

  • genuine question: do people use twitter to catch up with folks?

As much as I hate it, I still occasionally use fb to message old friends, and instagram to keep up with friends. twitter... used to be for following celebrities but i've gone off that since (and if i wanted to, i can do that on insta).

  • Google leaked tons of personal data and even a Nintendo Direct: report
  • I know the general narrative is "Google bad", but this seems like a healthy thing?

First of all, if this is a way for employees to report privacy incidents, that's a good thing.

Second, given the enormous reach giggle has, the fact that it has "thousands" of privacy incidents collected over many years isn't a large percentage at all.

  • Anyway to make $20 a day online consistently?
  • best option is some sort of support agent work which allows remote, but you need steady hours.

if she really can't hold steady hours for whatever reason then fiverr is the next best option. or look up things like gaming where you can sell in-game currency or resources for money

  • Google Pay is officially dead in the US. Just got the email.
  • I don't really remember what the names of Google apps are anymore. I just know there's an app I can use to tap to pay, and I have a custom icon for that app (since all of Googles app icons are so similar it's confusing).

Once they deprecate one app and move to the next, I'll just change the icon on that.

  • This is in nobody’s interest except the shareholders of weapons manufacturers.

You forgot about a country called Ukraine there buddy.

I gotta say, of all the conflicts going on in the world, Ukraine/Russia has got to be the one with the clearest "good" side and "bad" side. Pick another conflict to be edgy about.

Strikes against automakers spread to 38 locations in 20 states, Stellantis and GM are targeted

The United Auto Workers expanded its strike against major automakers Friday, walking out of 38 General Motors and Stellantis parts distribution centers in 20 states.

Another 5,600 additional workers joined the strike on top of the 13,000 of the 146,000 members that began the strike one week ago.

Ford was spared additional strikes because the company has met some of the union’s demands during negotiations over the past week, said UAW President Shawn Fain.

“We’ve made some real progress at Ford,” Fain said during an online presentation to union members. “We still have serious issues to work through, but we do want to recognize that Ford is showing that they are serious about reaching a deal.”

“At GM and Stellantis, it’s a different story,” he said. Those companies, he said, have rejected the union’s proposals for cost-of-living increases, profit sharing and job security.

UAW strike Day 4: GM threatens to send 2,000 workers home, Ford cuts 600 jobs

    • Union strategy: 13,000 autoworkers at the three Midwest plants, about 9% of the unionized workforce at the Big Three automakers, were the first to walk off the job. Now, more workers are temporarily out of work as the automakers are asking hundreds of non-striking workers not to show up to work.
    • Negotiation and demands: The UAW's call for a 40% pay increase is still intact as negotiations continue. Also on the docket are pensions, cost-of-living adjustments and quality-of-life improvements.
    • Reactions: President Biden urged automakers to share their profits with workers as the strike tested his bid to be the "most pro-labor" president. He is dispatching Julie Su, the acting labor secretary, and Gene Sperling, a White House senior adviser, to Detroit to help with negotiations.

Bernie Sanders Champions '32-Hour Work Week With No Loss in Pay'

As part of his Labor Day message to workers in the United States, Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday re-upped his call for the establishment of a 20% cut to the workweek with no loss in pay—an idea he said is "not radical" given the enormous productivity gains over recent decades that have resulted in massive profits for corporations but scraps for employees and the working class.

"It's time for a 32-hour workweek with no loss in pay," Sanders wrote in a Guardian op-ed as he cited a 480% increase in worker productivity since the 40-hour workweek was first established in 1940.

"It's time," he continued, "that working families were able to take advantage of the increased productivity that new technologies provide so that they can enjoy more leisure time, family time, educational and cultural opportunities—and less stress."
