What are your opinions on this Not Just Bikes comments on "fixing" North America?
  • yeah sure dont give up. fight for people etc etc. but if i had to bet, id bet he is right. call it doomerism. id rather recognize this country has little chance of improving in my lifetime so i could escape somewhere that isn't as terrible. is that privileged? yeah. It is also selfish. But I have one life.

The US serves capital and it is difficult to imagine any case where that changes outside of like government collapse. But then you get called an accelerationist, so lose-lose 🤷

I think what people actually have an issue with here is the bitter, almost preachy tone of these tweets. Which is also fair. I dont think its possible for everyone to be happy when sharing opinions on this topic. And people's opinions change depending on the circumstances.

  • ok this might sound heretical but a "hack" i learned from cooking youtube is to just boil rice like pasta then drain. I do this for about ~12 mins with white rice and it comes out perfect every time with no risk of messing up. Downside is you need to drain it.

unsure the validity of this claim? but apparently there can be a non-insignificant amount of arsenic in american grown rice, and boiling can help leech it out into the water.

  • i would argue this is less of an indication that kids belong to their parents, and more a result of realistic expectations. from what I can tell, this system as-is can run in place with little oversight. The request pipeline idea would require a whole other fully-staffed effort with unknown benefits, new policies, and runs the risk of introducing bias or inconsistent application.

  • not every kid is the same and i think this is recognition of that fact. promoting health while still giving trust to families is a good thing in my opinion. they can always revise these rules if it has unforeseen issues.

  • yeah this all seems pretty reasonable. its more or less what my parents did for me, but i was before the advent of ipad kids. not every parent can work at ensuring kids spend a limited time on devices, especially when they're working against adults whose full time jobs it is to cause addictive use.
