www.thehindu.com How to fix walkability hurdles in Bengaluru?

Should a 77% increase in pedestrian deaths in Bengaluru city from 2021 to 2023 be surprising at all, when our footpaths are so notoriously un-walkable, edging out everyone to stray onto the dangerous roads? The data is alarming, but does it stir policy makers and civic agencies to rethink, redesign ...

Korea sees more deaths than births for 52nd consecutive month in February
  • Population reduction will cause a lot of interim pain but might be what we need to increase the sustainability of the planet. In next 70 years, we might see a drastic reduction in populations of china and India as well. The lower human population will hopefully allow the planet to recover from the last 100 years uncontrolled resource extraction.

  • As Private Vehicles Surpass 1cr Mark, Bmtc Fleet Size Shrinks | Bengaluru News - Times of India
  • From the article it seems there is a plan to increase the fleet size. Metro is probably eating into BMTC ridership for obvious reasons like being faster for one. BMTC might be in wait and watch mode. Hopefully any new buses inducted will be electric.

  • Good things to do as a tourist in Bangalore?
  • What are the things your are interested in? There is an aerospace museum near Marathahalli if you are interested in planes and such. If you are interested in Amusement parks Lulu mall has an indoor one. Nearby Bangalore there are many temples which are historical. Bhoga Nadhiswara, Rangasthala near devanahalli along with Nandi hills will be good. Nandhi hills is good for sunrise , sunset and can be underwhelming during other times. If you are willing to venture further our, there are treks like devarayana Durga. Hope you enjoy your stay

  • Jayanagar Vendors In Spot As Bbmp Set To Evict Them Today | Bengaluru News - Times of India
  • I believe the law allows for mobile street vendors but not while encroaching the public spaces. While I sympathize with the vendors who are probably just trying to eke out a living, public spaces being used for private uses must be curbed. Atleast monetized in the worst case.

  • Bengaluru-based cardiologist slams Narayana Murthy’s 70-hr-a-week work schedule, says it can compromise heart health
  • We are desperate people but no one can force anyone to work more than legal limit. Enforcement of existing regulations alone will help. However for executive roles like IT, there is no max. But since it's knowledge work, hours can be flexible. That's what these guys are trying to exploit.

  • India Inc divided on Narayana Murthy's call for 70-hour work week to youth
  • I don't think India is divided. Noone will work more than required if given an option. IT folks might end up spending more hours in office but do less work when forced to do more hours. For other non executive work, it is clearly against the law. If folks want longer hours then they should start paying per hour. This will allow folks who need the money to pick up extra hours. Even then 70 hours is impossible.

  • Broadband internet experience?
  • I use ACT but haven't faced such major outage. However when power goes off my router disconnects and rejoins which takes around 5 mins. May be raise an escalation with ACT to see if they can provide power backup to their switch?

  • New bus shelter stolen in a week from busy Bengaluru road | Bengaluru News - Times of India
  • Looks like the complaint itself was filed on Sep 30 while the loss was noticed on Aug 28. This means a month already passed. The police seem to say all the commercial establishments have CCTV recordings for a month. It looks very fishy. I wonder if the contractor itself replaced it elsewhere to recover his loss from multitudes of bribes he must have surely paid.

  • People of Bengaluru, What's your daily commute situation?
  • I used to bicycle. First office was 6KM from home and the next was 15 KM. Thanks to great weather,it was mostly manageable. But once the metro and bus lanes started in ring road, the service roads were occupied by cars more than before. However luckily found a WFH job. So no commute until the next job or my current company decides to call people back.

  • WATCH | Bengaluru's Long Weekend Traffic Jam: Chaos At Nandi Hills
  • It is sort of overrated for what it is. May be for folks who like to cycle up hill, it offers a great challenge. There are good temples like Rangasthala and Bhoga nandeeshwara slightly far away from there. I would prefer that over driving up the hills anyday.

  • WATCH | Bengaluru's Long Weekend Traffic Jam: Chaos At Nandi Hills
  • Ha ha. I am more surprised that people didnt go for a longer distance holiday since it was a long weekend including the bandh and schools having holidays since Thursday. Perhaps the traffic nightmare on Wednesday scared them away from such travel.

  • Some questions about moving to bangalore?
  • The best commute depends on point to point. While buses are good, they may not connect all points. There is metro to many places now. Uber ola and rapido accept cash but it may be difficult to book a ride during peak times. Best is to stay close to office. Hindi works for most part. Moreover in Brookfield locals will be a mix of Telugu Tamil and Malayalam along with Kannada folks. Shop keepers are mostly malayalis or marwaris. So Hindi should work. There are a bunch of new PG that have come up behind Bgamane Solariam city in the Ekya ITPL school road. You can check that out. However nearest bus stop from that point is around 750 Meters. Since the PG is newly constructed it might slightly be better.

  • Whats a good mixer brand right now?
  • Yes it is a bit noisy. Esp. the chopper. However we usually run it for 2 to 3 mins. Stop check and repeat. So it was fine for us. The vaccum cleaner I used ( AmazonBasics one ) used to make a louder noise but that ran for about 15 mins :). So I guess we just might have better noise tolerance 😂
