Pulling news from Reddit and posting it here
  • i agree with what they brought up, as we probably don't want c/vancouver to be a carbon copy of r/vancouver, however i also think that fetching some valuable pieces of news (perhaps some of u/cyclinginvancouver's posts, for instance) automaticatically here might make sense, at least initially?

  • High end OLED (or QD-OLED) on Linux
  • I've been using a LG 27GR95QE for a couple of months now and I love it.
One of the issues with OLED monitors is sub-pixel rendering/layouts being different than usual LCD, which you can mostly bypass in Linux (I've been using it for work and am really not bothered after 8hrs/day looking at code).

  • Are you getting a ROG Ally?
  • Oh yeah, it's not like I need a new handheld or anything, I'm very happy with the Deck. It's extremely comfortable, I really like how easy it is to mod, find replacement parts / third-party accessories or even get support online.
That being said, I've been spoiled with VRR support on PS5 / Xbox Series X and it can quite literally be a game changer... And since the Deck is my only PC, I wouldn't mind a bit more performance from the Ally.

  • What does your SNES/SFC collection look like and what do you play on?

Hey c/snes, let's try to get this community kickstarted a bit!

Here's a shot of my current SNES/SFC collection:

    !

I usually play on my Analogue Super Nt (or Pocket if I'm on the go or want to play in bed).

What about you? Any favourites in your collection?

    What do you ride?
  • I alternate between my trusty Onewheel Pint (which I've rewheel modded and got a GT40 battery mod for, so I can comfortably go 35-40km on a single charge) - mostly rides around the city and on trails - and a Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser. This one is fully kitted for my SO to sit on the back or to go for weekly grocery hauls (I also got panniers at the front, haha), it's a very nice ride and I love it.

  • Paralyzed by choice, which handheld to best game on?
  • I really love my Analogue Pocket, but I (quite literally five minutes ago) just bought a Miyoo Mini Plus, for the convenience of save states everywhere.
I fear I won't be able to help you choose either, haha. I feel like it's always a "struggle" between getting the most authentic experience and just convenience, really.
The Miyoo might ultimately make it easier for you to pick up and play in short bursts, if that's what you're after.

  • r/steamdeck joins blackout
  • A tip that usually works for those, you want the URL of the community in its original instance (so https://lemmy.world/c/pchandhelds here) and you can search for it from your own home instance's "Communities" Search page ("All" type filter).
It worked for me, coming from beehaw :)

  • Should I buy a PS5 in 2023?
  • Some do, but much fewer than on Game Pass, it's not the model Sony is trying to push.
That being said, you'll usually find first-party titles after a year or so (but they might not stay indefinitely).
I would recommend taking a look at gamika.me if you want to get an idea of how both services compare. I personally enjoy both, maybe for slightly different reasons? I still think PS Plus Extra is a great deal though!

  • Opinions on the Series S? How much "worse" is it than the X?
  • I'm lazy so I'll just link to my comment on this very thread.
I haven't actually reinstalled MSFS since upgrading from a Series S to a Series X earlier this year, so I can't confirm whether stuttering on the X is still a thing, but performance on the S was pretty much flawless. I didn't install Lost Odyssey on the S back when I had it so I can't tell, sorry!

As for performance and graphical fidelity in other games, it will vary, and you'll likely notice it, as did I, coming from a PS5 - especially on 1440p/4K set. As a game pass machine though, it's really hard to beat price-to-performance wise.

  • Opinions on the Series S? How much "worse" is it than the X?
  • This video from Digital Foundry also highlights specific differences for MSFS that usually aren't present in other game. The short of it is that you might actually notice more stutters on Series X than Series S, surprisingly, at the quite obvious expense of graphical fidelity.

  • A comprehensive guide to finding and borrowing video games from our local libraries

    Hi c/Vancouver!

This is a follow-up to my initial post. I have since checked libraries of Metro Vancouver for video games and made similar lists for those which offer them on loan - afaict there is a total of six:

First, you should know about InterLINK and member libraries.

Second, those six libraries have different borrowing rules / limits w.r.t. video games:

    |Library|CPL|NWPL|NVCL|NVDPL|RPL|VPL| :--|:--|:--|:--|:--|:--|:--| |How Long?|2 weeks|3 weeks|2 weeks|3 weeks|1 week (²)|1 week| |Renewals?|2|2 + 3 (¹)|1|2|0 (²)|3| |How many games?|2|5|5|30?(³)|2 (²)|5|

NB: Any renewals are conditional on the games not being on hold for anyone else / the games not being in demand. (¹) 2 automatic renewals and 3 manual ones (²) The writing is specific to "Nintendo Switch Games", but you'll see they only have a handful of those listed on the website. This probably applies to other platforms but you might want to double check. (³) I couldn't find a clear "limit", so this is the maximum number of items which can be requested at a time - I am assuming the actual number of video games that can be checked out is lower, I will attempt to confirm with staff.

Lastly, here are my HowLongToBeat collections for each library:

    |Library|CPL|NWPL|NVCL|NVDPL|RPL|VPL| :--|:--|:--|:--|:--|:--|:--| |3DS|||17 games|||| |PS3|62 games|23 games|53 games|9 games||131 games| |PS4|224 games|50 games|159 games|49 games|52 games|583 games| |PS5|56 games||28 games|21 games||107 games| |Switch|189 games|46 games|78 games||3 games|199 games| |Wii|41 games|35 games|17 games|20 games||82 games| |Wii U|18 games|23 games|7 games|3 games||76 games| |Xbox 360|62 games|6 games|36 games|9 games||119 games| |Xbox One (inc. games with Smart Delivery)|156 games|36 games|93 games|33 games|34 games|399 games| |Xbox Series X (inc. games with Smart Delivery)|57 games||30 games|18 games||81 games|

A few things that are good-to-know:

    • There's strictly no M rated games at VPL or NWPL.
    • If you want a blast from the past, there's a single OG Xbox game at CPL, Tom Clancy's Splinter's Cell - and FWIW it is backwards compatible with every Xbox model - with a disc drive - in existence.
    • RPL
      • I was told by staff that they have another 10 Switch games on a first come, first serve basis, but I haven't heard back yet as to what those might be or where they are (and they're not in the system - that much I've been told). If you come across any of those games, please ping me so I can add them to the list!
      • I was also told that they should begin buying new PS4/PS5/Xbox Series games at some point in the near future, budget permitting.
      • Lastly, there's technically around 450 games listed on the RPL website, but I've found that they were either impossible to place a hold on or had a due date well in the past (> 6 months ago), thus the far lower number of games I listed above. I'm still checking with staff whether that's correct.

If you see any mistakes or for instance a game that is not actually available but is still listed in the collections, do let me know! And if any of you is familiar with Chilifresh or the Polaris ILS, please get in touch with me :)

    Happy gaming!

    Sleep or shutdown?
  • i've been having issues where the device would be unresponsive when waking it up from sleep (either during a game or in desktop mode) and the only option would be a hard shutdown, so i've become wary of sleep mode.
i'm still using it 90% of the time, but i make sure to save my progress beforehand.

  • Did you know that VPL has video games? I made them (somewhat) easier to find!

    Hey vancouver community!

This is a c/p from a thread I made over on reddit, which I think might be of general interest.

Did you know the VPL has almost 1,800 video games on offer? (As of writing this) I've never been happy with how difficult it is to find them and how little info is actually shown on the VPL website. And I'm sure many of you either had no idea the library even had any video games available or potentially just gave up on borrowing one because searching is a bit of a pain. All you need is a library card and you can borrow a maximum of 5 games at a time. The default loan period is one week and you can renew loans for games which are not in demand (on hold).

Enough with the intro, here are my collections on HowLongToBeat. I've made collections for each console separately, so that's it's far easier to filter them separately, and searching inside said collections is also mostly instantaneous.

And here are direct links to them:

Once on a specific collection page, it defaults to a "Rating" sort (this is community-driven, same with the "time to beat" shown for each game) and "Card View" (with cover / title / time to beat and notes), but those can be adjusted to your liking. I've included links to the game VPL listing(s) in the notes for each of them, as well as the corresponding search filter on the VPL website.

NB: Some games are missing from HLTB, so it's not a 1:1 match, but I'm working on that.

And please let me know if you see any issues / wrong links/games or if you have any questions!

    Lemmy.ca's Main Community @lemmy.ca any1th3r3 [he/him] @beehaw.org

are some communities hidden/inaccessible for non-lemmy.ca accounts?

    hey,

for some reason i can't see the vancouver community from my beehaw account (eg https://beehaw.org/c/[email protected] returns a 404 and it doesn't show up in https://beehaw.org/communities), but https://lemmy.ca/c/vancouver works just fine, any idea why that would be?

    thanks!
