How to Kill a Decentralised Network (such as the Fediverse)
  • I don't really get why people are quick to trust them. It's highly unlikely (perhaps impossible) that they do something like this just to support the FOSS ecosystem or for the benefit of their users, so they do it for profit, and for them to profit from it, they have to control as much as possible of the entire protocol.

    It's not rocket science really

Earlier today there was a post about rejecting Meta's intrusion in the fediverse, some don't see the danger in it or think it's unlikely that Meta can do any damage to the fediverse.

Someone posted this in the comments and I think it's extremely relevant and it deserves its own post so all can see it.

Defederation with Instances that Allow Loli and Shota
  • I totally understand where people are coming from talking about freedom of speech, believe me, in my country that is non-existent, so I value it highly. At the same time, freedom of speech has its limits, what are those limits? It's hard to tell.

But this is going to be one of those things that define the whole atmosphere of this community.

Are those communities being helpful or entertaining in any positive manner? I personally don't think so.

Are they a gathering place for content/people that wouldn't benefit our community? I personally think so.

So, whatever it's decided is not going to be entirely right or wrong, but it will be a step in fostering an identity.

If someone new comes in, and is checking all kinds of communities, seeing that kind of thing might turn them away; on the other hand, by knowing that type of content is welcomed, other kind of people might be inclined to join.

That's my two cents on the matter, I'd personally cut all ties with that, being something with no clear benefits and some potential dangers.

  • Reddit CEO calls unpaid moderators' concerns "noise" - time to send a message he won't forget.
  • This is it! The point is not just the 3rd party apps. They are just treating us as trash, and want to turn Reddit into something like Twitter or Facebook. Well go ahead, but people will migrate, and for a site that depends totally on the users, that's rough

  • I definitely think r/gaming has the biggest banger of a privated notice
  • Yeah they don't see the point, wich is the trajectory of the platform.

They are lying to everybody in order to push out of market the 3rd party apps, but that's one side of it, they are also, effectively, forcing you as a user to use a worse app just for them to get more money by doing less.

  • Anyone else a little disappointed how the blackout is going?
  • well, personally, I don't really care if people come here or not. I want that people who want to be here to be here, but not for this to be a massive site where everybody comes because it is "the new reddit".

And I also don't think about everyone leaving Reddit. The new Reddit works for some folks, not for us, so we come here and some other places. I don't want it to die either, it's just not my cup of tea anymore

  • Anyone else a little disappointed how the blackout is going?
  • This is the thing for me too, I just don't want to be in a community where the mods/owners don't care AT ALL about the community and are unwilling to listen. That feels like any other social media to me, and it is not what I was on Reddit for.
