The Fallout TV show gave the Fallout games a huge player bump, as everyone remembers they like Fallout
  • Steam just had a free weekend so I've been playing it. I like it a lot and I do think it's worth playing, but it's definitely a clunky console port, the added latency of forced multiplayer doesn't do it any favors, and the amount of QoL locked behind microtransactions or a $13/month subscription just feels bad.

  • What is your most embarrassing "ate the onion" moment?
  • About 20 years ago I was so outraged by Bonsai Kitten that I asked a friend's mom to help me write letters to ISPs and law enforcement to try to get it taken down.

It was a site with pictures of cats in glass jars, but it had very graphic details about how they supposedly kept cats alive in jars and grew them into weird shapes... I still think it's pretty tasteless, but it was clearly someone's idea of satire. It felt like a big deal back then, but these days it would be nothing more than a bad meme.

  • Google turns to regulators to make Apple open up iMessage
  • Not really the same thing, no. What you're overlooking is the way Apple integrates iMessage with SMS. Nobody signs up for an iMessage account or intentionally uses iMessage as a standalone service like you would with a discrete messaging service like Discord. It's presented as a seamless enhancement to SMS that is built into your messaging app whether you want it or not. The issue with that is certain features of iMessage are sent over SMS/MMS regardless of whether the receiving device supports them, which basically hijacks the standard with closed features and makes SMS worse for anyone who doesn't own an iPhone but knows somebody who does.

I've literally been unable to participate in group texts with iPhone users before because every message comes through as an unsupported MMS. Imagine getting 30+ message notifications from a group chat each day but you can't actually open any of them. iPhone users reasonably expect that it'll work for everyone because it's just part of their text app. They're not doing anything special or wrong by just using their text app, but there's some proprietary iMessage fuckery under the hood designed to make the experience worse for anyone who hasn't paid Apple. It's frustrating to everyone involved, and Apple knows exactly what they're doing.

  • Windows 11 will throttle 'excessive' users of AI as Copilot rolls out | PCWorld
  • Not surprising. Their free AI models on Bing are great, but GPT4 is limited to 5 messages before you have to start a new topic, and DALL-E throttles heavily once you run out of credits that reset weekly... Or you can buy more uses with the daily points you earn from doing quizzes and such on Bing. The bar is set pretty low.

  • Updates
  • I think it's important to consider that the joke was made over a decade ago before getting upset that it hasn't been accurate in over a decade.

But yeah, OP probably could have included a date in the title and avoided some of this.
