Citing recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling, Gov. Gavin Newsom orders state agencies to clear homeless camps and encourages cities to do so
  • What are the issues with housing first in LA? Because it's worked in other countries to great effect. I'm guessing it has something to do with the high cost to purchase the housing in LA due to their zoning laws and such? Maybe the US's lack of free mental and physical health care as well?

  • Germany shuts down Islamic Center Hamburg
  • That is 150% not what he was arrested for. It may very well be the sign he held while being arrested, but one does not imply the other. Never fucking trust Al Jazeera on these things they're far from neutral or factual.

Al Jazeera is a lot less biased on Israel Palestinians issues than western media tends to be. There have been multiple studies on it. But I had a feeling you'd say that which is why I also posted the article from Reuters. Also, Iris Hefets is a woman. There's a video you can watch of her being arrested for not doing anything but holding a sign. Not to mention there's all the other pro Palestinian protestors you've ignored that have received similar or worse treatment. I think there's been one in Berlin universities most recently, too.

Germany stopped arms exports days after the attacks. Before Nicaragua started its case at the ICJ, btw.

So ice had some trouble finding the exact judgment, mostly because the case is still ongoing, they just said Germany can keep sending arms to Israel. But from the text I read, they stopped sending arms in January or February 2024. Which isn't days after the attacks, it's actually many months after, but still, I'll concede. That's pretty good, I'm proud of Germany and way better than what the US is doing. I would disagree that body armor or helmets, fuses, or military vehicles aren't helping a genocidal state, though, especially since I saw something about mechanical parts for tank engines and stuff like that. Hopefully they keep examining future shipments, but a full BDS movement like happened with South Africa would be preferable, or the sanctions on Russia.

Will, when? Have, when? Certainly none since the 2000 PzF shortly after the attacks (anti-tank rockets, not really suitable for a genocide), I'd have heard of that. And when again? Presumably once the Israelis got around ousting Netanyahu and his goons. Scholz is very good at waffling and saying nothing, doubly and triply so when pressed, that's precisely what he's doing there. No official change in policy -- but somehow still nothing gets exported.

I guess you can presume that, but it seems like quite the leap. To me, it sounds like a political leader reaffirming their support of an apartheid genocide state and saying they'll go back to sending weapons. But political leaders in the West, especially the US and Germany, are so spineless about Israel, that if he is just saying this to get them off his back while they don't actually increase support again, all credit to him.

Germany has resumed its responsibilities to UNRWA after Israel's accusations turned out to be baseless, and no payments from Germany to UNWRA were due during the brief time payments were suspended

This does seem to be true as well, so my bad. But in my defense, it happened very recently and they put out a statement the same month as ICJ's response. Wonder if it's connected lol. But once again, all credit to Germany for resuming payments. It's definitely a good thing.

Which you probably should do before you accuse a country of supporting genocide.

I'm not the only one. There are countless articles from tons of Western news sources that I posted above about Germany supporting Israel the second most after the US, including military aid. Not to mention the common sources about their protests, their crackdown on protests, German civil servants sending their government requests to withdraw support from Israel, and more. But they are responding to international criticism way better than other countries, like the US, so I apologize for the facts I did get wrong or were outdated.

  • Germany shuts down Islamic Center Hamburg
  • How do you know explain them arresting pro-Palestenian voices then during peaceful protests?

They are very much taking a side and it is not the side of Palestinians.

This matches up with the research I've done that Germany is sending arms to Israel. Seriously, everywhere I've looked shows they are and support Bibi completely. They are sending actual arms, like anti-tank weapons, ammunition, explosives, military vehicles, etc.

Apparently Germany is the second highest supplier of arms to Israel. And have promised to send more.

“We have delivered weapons to Israel and we have not made a decision to stop doing so,” Chancellor Olaf Scholz said at a news conference in Berlin.

“We have not decided not to supply weapons. So we will (deliver) and we have (delivered to Israel),” the German leader added.

That's from like, today lol. It seems they have claimed that most exports are no lethal before, to the Hague , but considering the more recent statement that the Chancellor said they're going to send a bunch more weapons to Israel, plus all the other sources, and they're refusal to stop sending weapons in the ICJ using the defense that Hamas is bad and not that they're not sending weapons, I am going to believe him.

Not to mention other support they've shown, like withdrawing funding from the UNRWA which has contributed to the increasing famine and 200,000 deaths right there. Germany is very much not being neutral in this conflict at all. All of their pressure has been on pro-Palestinian voices (even Jewish ones), and all their support has been for Israel.

  • Germany shuts down Islamic Center Hamburg
  • Eh, I disagree. If they keep supporting Israel after this, it demonstrates that they are hypocritical. They are not following the law for its own sake, but as a cudgel, to bludgeon organizations they don't like while supporting genocidal organizations they do like. And considering they are suppressing groups that directly oppose Israel, not just Muslim ones lately but also anti-Zionist Jewish ones, it becomes even more obvious. If you're just picking and choosing which cultural groups to suppress, and purposefully letting the imperialist, colonialist Western backed, apartheid ethnostate-based ones through, even with the backing of the law, then you're just kind of leaning into the targeted scapegoating of fascism.

Not to say that's definitely what this is, we haven't seen the investigation evidence yet, but Germany has been leaning into that direction lately.

  • I wonder if you could have an instance federated to every other instance just for archived purposes, to save the data on every other instance's post and comment. Because copies of posts and comments are saved to federated instances, too, right? Or do I understand the tech wrong?

So it could have an admin team but no users, to prevent people worried about spammers and bots joining that instance to get around defederation rules. Maybe it just has a bot that crawls Lemmy, looking for instances to federate to. Could that work?

  • Israel parliament votes to label UN relief agency a terror organisation
  • One, that doesn't excuse blowing up schools and hospitals, even if it was true. It makes them way worse than Hamas in every single way. Israel bombing schools, hospitals, and relief agencies isn't some sort of own when Gaza has been left with no running medical system and Israel is still doing war crimes and a genocide. If I was the President, I wouldn't sign off in bombing your neighborhood if a relative of yours did a crime, but then I'm not a genocidal maniac. If I was held hostage and someone blew me up, I'd be way more mad at them than the hostage taker. It's just common sense.

Two, none of that that IDF propaganda has been proven to be true for the places they've blown up in the latest conflict. They stage little photo ops but none of it that I can find has been independently verified, and often it comes out laughably untrue, ruining their credibility further.

Three, it's not a war, it's an apartheid ethnostate occupying territory, doing ethnic cleansing, taking land, and trying to oppress and kill all the indigenous people through genocide over 70 years; and people trying to resist that. Some of those people are terrible, but that's still what it is. The colonizers are the aggressors, the cause of this, any way you slice it.

  • Israel parliament votes to label UN relief agency a terror organisation
  • Eh, she's Vice-President. That barely means anything. Her office didn't even know Biden was planning on dropping out. So far her only job is to break ties and tell immigrants not to come into the country. I won't judge her on this genocide until she's President (which hopefully she will be).

  • you can set your watch to it
  • Biden doesn't care about the illegal settlements either. He says he does, but he hasn't done anything to change the fact that they're increasing, nor the facts on the ground in terms of settler violence. He put out a few sanctions on like 4 guys, ignoring all the others, and sanctioned one military unit, which is still getting money because of the billions of dollars we give the rest of their government. They need to sanction the whole government like they do Russia for Ukraine, or at least high up government officials or business leaders. Otherwise, it's just for show, like shouting ACAB while arresting one bad cop, and then giving the rest of the corrupt department money, military vehicles, and promotions.

Rhetorically, they say different things, sure, but in terms of how things affect Palestinians, they're basically the same. Biden just wrings his hands and shakes his head more before giving Israel the weapons and money, while Trump high fives them. Either way the genocide progresses at the same rate. They can't bomb them any faster without ruining the rest of the international cover they have, or ruining the land they want to take with nuclear radiation.

  • you can set your watch to it
  • He's still been giving them tons of weapons and bypassing Congress to do that. Even delayed weapons have been going through so it hasn't really mattered in the end because they have enough weapons to cover them during a delay or two. Plus any delays are made up for by other expedited shipments. Once again, just words and theater. They're pantomiming for each other's base and opposition basically. The US just needs the slightest excuse from Israel that they won't bomb civilians, despite continuing to do so, and then it's bombs away. Not to mention all the criticism and excessive force approved of by Biden against pro Palestinian protestors. Materially, there's no difference.

So far, from what I've heard and seen, I have much more faith in Kamala on this issue than Biden. Which isn't much, it's a low bar, but she isn't actively causing a genocide, so she's got my vote more than Biden. Not that it means anything in this system that barely passes for democracy, because of the state I live in.

  • The homeopaths of spin
  • Nah, pressuring Biden was the right strategy. It's clearly been vindicated. He has now stepped down and been replaced by someone else, who hopefully won't be as for the genocide. If it's not complete by the time she takes office.

  • you can set your watch to it
  • I doubt Biden wasn't going to stop Israel from annexing Palestine, either. Remember his "red line" they blew past? They're basically equal on genocide, except for some words by Biden. With Kamala, I'm not sure yet, so she's got that going for her.

  • Nature is Fucking Lit

I'd love a Nature is Fucking Lit community over here on Lemmy. I just saw the cutest post on Reddit there and I'd love to spread it or see it over here. (I look at reddit without a profile while at my work computer sometimes, don't judge me lol).

Think I should post it to the lemmy.world one to revive that one? Looks like that hasn't been active in a few months.

I also wonder if it's better to use this opportunity when it's possibly dead to revive the community somewhere else? Like maybe mander.xyz since nature is connected to science or something? Or maybe the solar punk instance? Is there a better place someone can think of or should we stick to the Lemmy.world one?

    What do people think?

How is LCS Best of 3's So far? (Week 2)

I know it's probably too early to tell but I've been working weekends lately so it's been hard to watch the LCS and catch up, even though I was excited about this season. How are people enjoying the changes? Bo3's seem like a positive change so far?

What about people from other regions? Have they had changes to their esports that seem positive or negative so far?

Do You Add Extra Storage to Your Playstation?

I'm considering buying some extra storage space for my PS5. Last time I was out of town, my partner tried to play a game and they couldn't, because I deleted it to make room. They went to download it but it was out of space, so of course they didn't want to delete anything. That makes me sad because I want to encourage them to use it and game lol. Plus, I think it would make it easier rather than always downloading and deleting things.

Have other people bought extra storage for PS5? What kind would you recommend?

Do you go for internal or external? Do you have the heat sink if an internal one? Is 4TB enough or overkill? I think I saw that amount somewhere once (unless I imagined it) but maybe 1 or 2 TB is good, and probably easier to find.

    How is The Watchers (2024)?

We're looking at movies to watch for Father's Day and my dad has already watched most of the ones out right now, so that eliminates the ones I want to see (Furiosa, The Fall Guy) and he's not interested in Planet of the Apes. That basically leaves the Watchers.

Anyone see it yet and have any opinions on it? Going either way to spend time with my father, but want to know how low to set my mind expectations lol.

What is the up with the beef between Drake and Kendrick Lamar? And what about J. Cole?

I know they're posting diss tracks against each other, but I'm not sure why? What made this start? And how was J. Cole involved? And how has this feud evolved so far?

I feel so out of the loop on this one! All I see is reaction images of the songs and Kendrick destroying Drake, but without the context of why they were posted, I'm still confused.

What songs do you listen to when lifting at the gym?

I was inspired to listen to a few new artists at the gym recently by an FD Signifier video on how lately female rappers are going hard in a way you can lift to while recent male rappers have mostly been going for a more, calm, rambling flow that is probably better for when you're relaxing on drugs or driving or something.

So I picked a couple of the female rappers he mentioned that were newer than my aged music tastes (Latto, Megan Thee Stallion, etc.) and added some of their songs to my lifting playlist and ya, some of their songs went pretty hard.

I'm wondering if there are any other good artists I'm missing out on keeping the same rotation forever, so I thought I'd ask the class.

What songs do you listen to when trying to get pumped at the gym?
