Fresh basil
  • I was too much of a nerd that I joined a informal high school circle where they hike and talked about "plants and trees" and all they did was smoke pot where I wanted to discuss invasive species to the forest population.

  • Bluesky now has 30 million users.
  • I tried to figure out Mastodon a few months ago. I'm with you.

Someone asked me to follow them on Mastodon. I couldn't find them in the app. He sent me the direct link and it opened up a browser on my phone, refusing to recognize the app.

I finally added them directly from a browser by by remembering which server I was in, log into that, visiting their link again, adding them from my logged in server, and then it finally appeared in the app.

And if I'm dealing with thet level of monkeying around, how many others are? How the hell are we supposed to contribute and add content and find social circles when we're fighting with the UI?

Lemmy seems to have figured out how to not make a sucky experience with multiple servers.

  • AI Company Asks Job Applicants Not to Use AI in Job Applications
  • Do people not realize it's already a war on AI in the job market?

    • There's a 90% chance your company is already using AI to generate job postings.

    • Then you have smart applicants who are using AI to generate custom cover letters and applications.

    • Then you have HR teams using AI to summarize applicants resumes/cover letters.

This is the shit show we're in. And if you're still meticulously hand crafting your letters and unemployed, sorry to break it to you.

‘Forbidden Words’: Github Reveals How Software Engineers Are Purging Federal Databases

A project called "Remove-DEI" shows the tweaks used to remove "forbidden words" from a database about childhood school readiness.

The updates, shown in Github commits, are to a database for the Department of Health and Human Services’ Head Start program. They show a project called “Remove-DEI,” which reveal some of the back-and-forth that is happening behind the scenes to align federal agencies with Donald Trump’s executive orders that forbid almost anything having to do with race or gender within federal agencies. The Github pages show software engineers discussing amongst themselves how to best remove all instances of “forbidden words” from a specific database, and the code updates they used to do it. The changes also show that, while thousands of government datasets are disappearing from the internet, even ones that remain are having parts of their utility deprecated or broken in a way that may not be visible to those outside the government.

You might as well go for it
  • At least make the shot count.

My buddy with the fedora is really just looking for friendship first. He has a lot of female friends. Saw a girl with a cool shirt, brought it up, and they spent the hour talking and pretty sure they're doing coffee dates now and moving into something more.

Where my brother who is a gym rat goes around asking literally every woman under the sun if they want to have dinner. I watched him go up to the bartender, ask her out, get rejected, then while walking to the bathroom, get rejected by a girl waiting in line in the bathroom. He calls it a numbers game and is oblivious of how he sees women. Also yuck when he asked out the bartender.

  • ‘A publicity stunt’: activists decry Trump’s immigration raids marketed as entertainment
  • There's that shitty YouTube influencer asmongold, the dude who sleeps in garbage, who was filming immigration raids with popcorn?

I know this because I called it out to my one friend who frequently watches YouTube Influencers and defends their behavior as "peak comedy".

Well he's struggling to defend this right wing trash.

  • Me asking about a current politician's achievements and got this.

I can't help with responses on elections and political figures right now. I'm trained to be as accurate as possible but I can make mistakes sometimes. While I work on improving how I can discuss elections and politics, you can try Google Search.
