10 years from now. You've got this!
  • Oh shit, it's the middle of summer and snowing in a place that doesn't even snow in winter. The climate is far worse than I thought... and we have kids now. Hopefully they're not mine, I'm too old to deal with that...

  • Do you have any games that you like but you never finished?
  • I'm having similar problems with Tears of the Kingdom. At first I really liked the changes to the game but after 5 - 10 hours I lost any enthusiasm to play it. I kind of remembered the experience playing BOTW which I really fought hard to try and like too.

It's not just the weapon or combat system... I just struggled to care about anything after a while.

  • What are your use cases for the Steam Deck?
  • I wrote a long rambling post that I decided to summarise instead. I love that it's basically a PC laptop with all of the flexibility that comes with it, that's smaller, light and portable enough that I can I take everywhere.

But more importantly, it's gaming focused - the controls are great and it's fantastic for emulation and weird use cases, like running Interstate 76 with 3DFX support and the correct framerate.

I love that I can replace the hard drive or install whatever I want.

  • [Help] How can I play games on my TV while still using the steam deck as a controller?
  • Not what you're asking for, but another option is to use a DualShock 4 controller which also supports touchpad (which can be divided in left/right if you want). I've found a pretty decent amount of community support and often use the touchpad for mouse games, though it's not quite as comfortable as the Steam Deck .

(I'm sure Dualsense 5 works just as well but I can only speak to Dualshock 4, which you can find for the cost of a HDMI cable online).

  • FTC: Xbox-exclusive Starfield is “powerful evidence” against Activision deal
  • Coloured by my experience as a PS4/PS5 owner, it's frustrating because no-one ever expected Starfield to run on Switch... But a PS5 is very similar to an Xbox and would run it without an issue.

A lot of people only have room/budget for one "main" device. Sony's reputation for exclusive story rich games made that an easy choice.

The fact that Bethesda games were available on PlayStation and Xbox in the past makes it feels more like something being taken from us rather than something that was never available to begin with. Even though Starfield is a new IP.

I'll power through it on my Steam Deck if it runs because I want to play it, but I'm going to remain bitter for some time.

  • Which childhood videogame is your playing tradition?
  • I don't think this is what you meant, but I remember the night a friend of my dad's came over and installed Doom (shareware) on our computer with floppy disks. I remember not being allowed to play it at first and then, when I finally was, being mesmerised by it. Up until that point I'd been playing Wolfenstein 3D and thought that was as good as it gets. Textured floors, ceilings, stairs and exploading barrels blew my little mind.

So my tradition is that some version of Doom I or Doom II is on basically everything I have. Android (Delta Touch as I love the voxel mod), Switch, Steam Deck - whenever I have a free moment and want to play something but I don't know what it is, I probably bash out a few levels of Doom.

It's perfect to just pick up and play and for some reason I never grow tired of it... which is weird as I generally don't replay games unless I really like them.

  • Automakers can’t quit manual transmissions so they’re cramming fake stuff into EVs
  • Creep is a useful feature to turn on/off though, even if it's mimicking something.

But yeah, I think it's going to be an exciting time for a while as ideas and features are thrown around. Old conventions will die as new ones are born.

  • What is your favorite phone OS growing up?
  • So, I'm going to choose "growing up" to mean "late teenage years" because while mobiles technically existed before then I didn't know or care what they were.

First phone was a Phillips Savvy. I got it because it was cheap but SMS were 20c each and I didn't really have a job, so I mostly just called people or messaged people and asked them to call me.

Then I got a second-hand Nokia 5110 which was more expensive but really common. You could buy new plastic fronts/back and swap between them. Great phone but it died when I accidentally broke the screen.

Ok, so the first phone that I loved (even though I didn't like the design) was an Ericsson A3618 because, even though it was still monophonic, it had a ringtone composer built into it. So I'd sit there making my own weird ringtones.. and it had Tetris. So I guess that's the answer.

The last phone I remember having before getting a Blackberry at work (and by definition far from "growing up") was a Siemens C55. Polyphonic ringtones, prince of persia... it was pretty cool.

  • Question Of The Week: What's an app you'd like to try in visionOS?
  • 4 or 5yrs ago I built a Banana for scale AR app, that I never published, where you could place a fairly realistic 3D model of a banana in a scene from your viewfinder.

While jumping on a bandwagon a bit, the idea was to use it for a vague measurement of objects but it mostly just turned into the fun of putting pictures of bananas in random places.

So if I ever get a Vision Pro.... probably that.

If normalising the use of AR headsets in public ever becomes a thing I think it could be fun to have virtual geocaches around... Provided it can be done safely.
