Do you believe in God?
  • No

I was almost 14 years old when I lost my faith. I grew up in severe poverty, was severely depressed due to bullying and my weight, and I am LGBT. I found a website listing the inconsistencies in the Bible. I attempted to show my grandmother, who proceeded to laugh in my face. So I kept reading, then I came to a conclusion on my own.

The moment it finally "clicked" it honestly felt like a weight off my shoulders. Like I'd finally was free. My lack of faith hasn't waivered since then.

  • What is your deepest desire right now?
  • For my worldbuilding and writing to take off. I want to animate the history of my world, and it's something I want to do full time, but it's a lot of money + time investment. Also live somewhere that I'm not constantly looking over my shoulder. Shit neighbors suck.

  • What are the main challenges in Linux adoption for New users, and how can it be addressed?
  • Agree with pretty much everything. If I have to fight just to do basic shit why should I bother with it? My tools of the trade don't work on it, a lot of my games don't work on it, and my computer itself might not work on it (also AMD here). There's no value to using it. Just a lot of headaches.

  • What visual medium do you imagine your world in?
  • Same as the real world. I have a real vivid imagination. I can see people's faces, their posture, what they're wearing, what they're doing, etc. I can hear wagons traveling on a muddy road, the sounds of weapons clashing, the moans of the dying, idle chatter and more. It's very easy to daydream and put myself in the world.

  • Help with fleshing out a sci-fi world?

All of my experience with worldbuilding are medieval-esque worlds pre-gunpowder era. However, now I find myself making a game set in a fictional solar system. Aside from the general layout of the system, the size and names of planets, and the reasons for the various factions fighting for control of it, I'm kind of stuck.

I've never designed an entirely new life form before, and now I have to populate four different habitable planets. How do I design a fictional world without it being a total ripoff of star wars?

Tomorrow many subreddits will open up again, will you switch back to Reddit or stay on Lemmy (or use both)
  • Deleted all my comments and reddit accounts. Out of curiosity I browsed the front page. Literally nothing worth scrolling for. Inflammatory, rage bait, misleading headlines, repost bots, same content spammed to different subreddits. These blackout was just what I needed to break my dependence on it. Don't see no point in going back.

  • What's your go-to method to get un-stuck while worldbuilding?
  • Take a break. Play some video games. Maybe watch a few videos on historical battles or events. Ideas seem to drum up then. When it comes to culture, sometimes I'll ask ChatGPT for ideas on traditions like burial practice. A few tweaks here and there and I'm back in business.

  • What are some of the traditions in your world?

I haven't focused on culture as I should have. I'm curious about things like festivals, rites of passage, religious ceremonies, etc etc.

Reddit blackout and second growth wave
  • The AMA has led some subreddits to not only go private early, but to also state that it would be indefinite until there were changes. /r/videos is the biggest one I know. So we'll probably have another wave if it gets bad enough / there is admin intervention.

  • Wireless cameras that don't spy on you like Ring?

I rent so I cannot set up a wired system. I need two of them and preferably they'd be okay in severe weather. Thunderstorms are common in spring / autumn as is severe weather including tornadoes. In fact my house nearly got hit by one two months ago. Fun times. Summers are hot and sometimes humid. Currently 90s. Triple digits probably late this month or next.

We don't typically get snow in the winter but it can get cold. Reached zero degrees last December. Supposed to be "rare" but climate is changing and whatnot.

Would prefer to keep it under $300 for both cameras but I'm willing to bump it up a little for better quality if necessary.
