What are you playing this weekend? (2023.07.21)
  • Making my way through FF16. According to the PS5 dashboard completion percentage I'm at about 70% complete right now. So I might be able to finish over the weekend, but having a six-year-old at home might make that harder to accomplish.

Either way, I'm really enjoying it despite it being absolutely archaic in terms of its actual game design. It's really carried by its presentation, soundtrack, and decent story. They've arguably stripped away too much of what typically defines a Final Fantasy game here, but I'm still having a great time by just choosing to appreciate what it does do well.

  • [WINNER: OPTION B] Choose Voyager's icon!
  • It's B all day. Close the polls because it ain't even close.

  • The Bridgelands by Chris Bradley
  • Daaamn. The lighting and thick atmosphere in this picture are sublime. I want to go there.

  • Hell yes!
  • They absolutely did. So much more room for air/sound to flow through those speakers in CRTs. That's why most people resort to sound bars at a minimum to get halfway decent sound for today's flat panel televisions. You just can't fit powerful speakers into them.

  • What gaming communities are you missing out on in the Fediverse?
  • I'm mainly just waiting for NintendoSwitchDeals and PS5Deals to become active to the point where they are at least half as useful as they were on the Old Site. I used to check those every day.

I also hope to see individual games and franchises getting their own dedicated communities on here eventually as well.

  • What android client do you use?
  • I've tried them all, and as of right now Connect feels the most polished and feature rich. So that's my recommendation.

  • Soon 80000 active per day. Help by inviting friends to lemmy :)
  • Another hot tip: don't refer to people as "normies."

  • Why do i "fear" nostalgic,old,familiar things?
  • Nostalgia is really interesting in that it's inherently bittersweet. It's nice because it grounds us in a shared timeline and focuses on mostly positive aspects of some past point in time, but it's also sad because it means thinking back fondly on a time that will never be again.

So maybe it's the bitter half of that bittersweet feeling that you're subconsciously averse to? Either that or maybe your past/childhood was mostly negative or even traumatic? I'm no psychologist, so really I don't know what I'm talking about.

  • Dead Malls - A place for photos, videos, and discussions related to dead or dying malls.
  • An empire that we lived in and got to experience when it was thriving. That's why dead malls in particular have a distinctly bittersweet feeling to them. Those of us who frequented malls in the 80's and 90's can vividly remember when they were filled with people, commerce, and social activity. They were such lively social spaces back then, so seeing them slowly succumb to the ravages of time and fade into irrelevancy is both sad and fascinating.

  • Arcade Sticks/Fightsticks - Discuss and share media related to the most niche and expensive gaming controllers around

Do you like paying hundreds of dollars for a huge controller that you only use for a small handful of gaming genres? You do? Then this is the community for you!

After subscribing, feel free to drop a pic of your arcade stick(s), custom artwork, mods, etc. Customization is half the fun with arcade sticks, so show them off.

Anyone else still rocking the 351V?
  • Yep. Still have my black one with AmberElec installed. I love everything about it other than the display's somewhat muted colors and mediocre battery life.

  • Me browsing Lemmy instead of Reddit
  • We're so fucking cool, aren't we?

  • Biomedical CEO believes it’ll soon be possible for same-sex couples to share biological children
  • Lol. I read this in an entirely different context, like you were implying that they'd go to hell for this.

  • Meta Threads engagement has dropped off since red-hot debut, tracking firms say
  • This is exactly what I was going to say. The feed on Threads is absolutely abysmal. Just an endless stream of bullshit that I don't want to see. That might improve in the future as they continue to update the app and its feed algorithms, but as of right now it's pretty terrible at showing the user content that they're interested in.

  • New to coffee
  • In my opinion the cheapest, simplest way to experience a significant jump in quality from what you're currently doing is to buy an Aeropress.

You can get one new for only $30-40, and after trying a few times you'll likely be blown away by how much better the coffee it produces is than what you've grown accustomed to with the Keurig.

An electric kettle is another good purchase to go along with your Aeropress, and it generally comes in handy for plenty of other uses too.

If you start getting into making better coffee at home with the Aeropress, then the next step on your journey would be to invest in a grinder and make the switch to whole beans. That's really the last thing you'll need if you're trying to max out coffee quality at home.

As for drinking it black, that's totally up to you. Personally I like a little cream and sugar in my coffee, and I'm probably seen as a coffee snob by my friends. Don't let anyone tell you that black is the preferred way to drink coffee. It's all preference, and I like the heavier body that cream/milk gives the brew.

If you end up taking any of this advice, then here's my go-to recipe for the best Aeropress coffee:

    • Set the Aeropress up inverted (you can Google this)
    • Between coarse and fine grind (two scoops)
    • Heat water to 195°F
    • Pour water in until it just covers the grounds to let it bloom, then wait 30 seconds
    • Fill the Aeropress up to the top with more water
    • Stir for ten seconds
    • Let brew for one more minute
    • Press slowly into mug
    • Add cream/sugar to taste

I hope that helps. Just be warned... Once you go down this path, you'll likely no longer be able to tolerate K-Cup coffee.

  • First Pirate Bay Server
  • That's really cool that someone thought to preserve this and put it on display in a museum. It's like a modern historical artifact from the golden age of computing.

  • PSA - Arcade Sticks are great for genres other than fighting games
  • Don't forget the neon lights, the cacophony of booming arcade cabinet speakers echoing throughout the room, and body odor and cigarette smoke swirling together and filling the air with their combined, intoxicating scent.

If you're too young to have experienced arcades in the 80's/90's and think I'm describing heaven on Earth, it's because I am. That's exactly what it was.

  • PSA - Arcade Sticks are great for genres other than fighting games

One of the reasons I chose to name this community Arcade Sticks rather than Fightsticks is because these controllers are great for more than just fighting games. Any game that has roots in arcades or otherwise features arcade-inspired gameplay can benefit from the precision and snappiness of a nice arcade stick (including modern leverless variants).

Personally, I tend to use mine a lot when playing bullet hell shmups on my PC. Pictured in this post is my beloved Qanba Q4RAF, which is IMO the best stick that Qanba ever put out. Hell, I'd argue it's the best commercially released stick ever, but that's probably worthy of another thread sometime in the near-future...

Which meaningful and memorable quotes contained in a videogame can you recall?
  • "Shouldn't we wait for reinforcements?"

    "I am the reinforcements."

    • Vagrant Story, PS1
  • Progression of my ol' reliable TE2 stick over the years

Figured I'd kick things off in this new community with a picture showing how my Madcatz TE2 (PS4) stick has evolved over the years.

I got the Guilty Gear Xrd version when it released many years ago, and it's still what I'm using today to play GG: Strive, Street Fighter 6, and all other PS4/PS4 fighting games.

It feels fitting to post this now, as it will likely be retired/replaced in the next month or so when my first leverless stick arrives (the 2023 Snack Box Micro). I'll be sure to post a picture of that as well once I get it customized with some new artwork.

Thumbnail previews and subscriber counts differ when connecting to a community from a separate Lemmy instance

    Another Lemmy newbie question here.

I have subscribed to a small handful of Communities that live outside of Lemmy.world, and that worked easily enough. But I notice that when accessing them here rather than on their own servers they aren't quite in sync. Posts are in a different order or delayed when viewing them from Lemmy.world through my subscriptions, thumbnail images don't load, and the subscriber count in the sidebar is often much lower here than when viewing the Community on its host instance.

Is this intended behavior, a known issue with Lemmy, or something on my end?

Is there any way to search for communities across all Lemmy instances?

This is my first day in the Fediverse, and I'm building out my sub list in Lemmy right now. I noticed that searching for Communities only looks within the instance that I'm logged into. Is there any easy way to search across all available Lemmy servers for Communities?
