What way did the Titan submersible implode?
  • Wow. So those echoes are literally the sound waves propagating to the surface and reflecting back to the hydrophone on the bottom at 2.62km of depth, a round trip of 5.24km for each echo. That's also a really great example of how much faster sound propagates in water.

  • It's over - Sync for Reddit is offline
  • I just did about an hour ago. App updated with the new farewell message and the Sync for Lemmy sign-up, which I filled out, and then uninstalled. And then I uninstalled the official Reddit app, too. And Baconator, which I forgot I still even had.

I can't browse Reddit on my Xbox anymore! What a shame.

  • Welp, I just deleted my 12 year old, 240k+ karma Reddit account
  • So you can sign up for a specific instance of lemmy or kbin, and then see and interact with any content from any other instance of the Fediverse, provided they have not defederated. Where things get a little weird is how upcoming apps will function. I was told that Sync for Lemmy will likely require you to have a Lemmy account to sign in, but will still allow you to browse and post to any Fediverse content. This may end up being just a short-term issue until developers can "line up API endpoints", whatever the Treknobabble that means.

  • Ordinary redditors are feeling the pain as well.
  • The interface for Sync, as an example, made it much easier and more efficient to use. I would argue that 3P users use more calls because using those apps allow you to browse and interact far more effectively without cutting through the swaths of "He Gets Us" ads that Sync users never even had to see. Ultimately, I suspect that tha was the true reason for the API changes. Lost ad revenue. Judging by what I saw just today being stuck briefly on the official Reddit app and the website taking care of last minute issues after Sync went down, it's bad. Wall of ads.

  • Vicious, but true. I'm still struggling with whether or not I'm going to astroturf my comment history and delete my account. I see a lot of folks saying their comments were restored and then they had no way to log back in to delete them again. For now, I'm just going to leave my Reddit account dormant. I suppose it isn't super effective to leave my content there for Spez to benefit from, but I kinda feel like it does more harm to people just looking for answers than it ever will to Spez if I were to remove it. All around, this is just a ridiculously stupid situation we all find ourselves in over the whims of small minds chasing after big money. Again.

  • Do you have the Nintendo Switch Online expansion pack? Do you like it?
  • I'm playing through Ocarina of Time for the umpteenth time, Majora's Mask, Minish Cap, and Metroid Fusion. I feel like it's worth it. We have a family plan and my family all play Animal Crossing, so they enjoy the DLC that comes with the Expansion Pass.

It really does boil down to whether or not you care about the features it provides. If you have an easier way to emulate the N64, Genesis or GBA ( or have the original hardware) I wouldn't bother. The DLC perk isn't worth it on its own, as it's still cheaper to just buy the DLC straight out. The caveat being for yourself. If you're using a family plan, and play all of the games with the DLC, it can definitely be more affordable than buying all of the DLC 4 times.

  • What are you all playing this week?
  • My wife is playing Tears of the Kingdom, and I'm replaying Skyward Sword on Hard Mode and Ocarina of Time. Really, I've been playing all of the Zelda games available, and really hoping for an announcement about Wind Waker.

  • Why lemmy.world should not defederate from beehaw.org.
  • It isn't stupidity or ignorance. It's a deliberate tactic used in bad faith. It's the tactic of "I'm not racist but..." before spewing racist garbage. They know their arguments are bigoted and hateful, but they also believe it doesn't matter because their targets are subhuman and not worthy of protection of any kind.

  • The Future of Reddit after the Blackout
  • I'm off. Donezo unless they reverse course. I'll log in one last time on the 30th to permanently close the subs I own. I'm debating if it's worth the effort to scrub my account and delete it, too.
