Trek Motivational Poster: Stress
  • Death: it ends any illness!:-P

  • Do you think Biden should step down? If so who do you think is a good person to replace him?
  • A lot of that is not deserved. Some of it is though. E.g. when handed an assignment, she complains that it's too hard, rather than take advantage of the opportunity. It's like... she ran for the whole job, but then she couldn't handle even just one isolated issue, what gives?

She also reputedly alienates the people working for her, but it's not clear to me how trustworthy that tidbit of information is. Some young rich white boys don't like being told what to do by a woman, perhaps especially a black one, so that very well could not be her fault. Even so, it's yet another strike against her, pointing to lack of leadership skills, even if the severity of it is small.

The bonus is that she could have all of Biden's administration working for her as well. However, will she listen to them, or strongarm them saying that she knows better? Reports say the latter, unfortunately... (and iirc).

Nowhere close to as bad as Trump though, in all of these respects plus so very many more, e.g. the coup attempt, the raping and felony convictions, to name just a few. The problems with Harris are more her electability among voters, not how well she'd do the job, which is possibly not well but again nowhere close to as bad as Trump.

While I am at it, here is a post about what I thought was an astute and fairly comprehensive (more or less) analysis on the topic, from The Atlantic which is almost the last source of news that I would trust from a mainstream media source these days (after they were all bought out by billionaires and now censor information that their owners don't want them talking about). And also here is a short video from Jon Stewart, my hero, saying essentially the same thing - or rather, not that he step down, but that a debate be held so that people are allowed to choose who they want.

But it doesn't matter, we plebes are not offered any choices, beyond whether or which side to vote for. Personally, I expect a lot of people will sit out the election and not vote, identically to what happened with Hillary Clinton in 2016. I can only hope I'm wrong! (But sadly, it's an increasingly likely possiblity, e.g. as Biden calls Zelenskiy, the Prime Minister of Ukraine, as "President Putin" - those gaffes may have been laughed off previously, but especially after that debate performance... these things take on much greater degree of seriousness; especially with big-name & fame consistent Democrat donors like George Clooney jumping on the bandwagon, saying that Biden is not the same man that he was even a few months ago - something has changed, it's obvious to anyone looking). Anyway, it looks like Biden is refusing to step down, so that is that, our opinions don't matter here.

    along with your internal organs:-).

  • Heat is deadly. Why does our culture push us to ignore it?
  • The last sentence ends with:

    we are the problem.

The answer to the title question is chasing after short-term profits at the expense of all else - as we all understood perfectly before it was asked - and therefore the true underlying answer is bc clickbait title gets more clicks if it seems to ask a simple question than if it does not.

The article itself seemed mostly fine, if extremely wordy and rambling, but perhaps I was so put out by that "trick" with the title that I did not give it a fair chance - it just bugs me so much when people chase short-term profits to the exclusion of all other considerations, that I find it difficult to look past that effect:-|.

  • Heat is deadly. Why does our culture push us to ignore it?
  • I see your logic, and I raise you... "golf". (I win! And then we all lose...)

  • Biden introduces Zelenskiy as ‘President Putin’ at Nato summit
  • The trutly heart-breaking fact of all of this is that the election is breaking down along the lines of which flavor of fascism you want? Both sides also represent neoliberalism - one being the American form and the other being the more Russian variant.

I am starting to see the Yin & Yang of it all, and like Trump lies to people's faces, yet in doing so he more honestly gives his particular base what they want (they are mean, vindictive, and crass, so taunting "Baby Killer!" is what they enjoy), while in contrast Biden at least tried to tell the truth, yet as you suggested in a manner as to selectively hide certain other inconvenient truths, but in so doing he failed to play to his own base. Biden from 20 years ago would have done amazing at this, it seems like. Whereas now... well, "he has a cold" (that will not end anytime in the next 5 years).

Dems are nowhere close to being "liberal", but they really will lead the country better than the Russian transplanted culture that some are trying (successfully) to import. That is, if they can get elected, which the Blue Magas - like their red counterparts - are flat-out ignoring, seems less likely by the day.

Oh well, "We the People" have no say in any of this. Or at least, that is the story that we are being told, across all forms of social media, including, sadly, the Fediverse as well (I am surprised that your and my comment does not have tens of downvotes already - it seems like the brigade is getting fatigued and not willing to chase down every comment that expresses the slightest doubt about Biden and pounce upon it). So just like with RBG, and even more like Hillary 2016, we will see what happens, I guess!? Those who refuse to learn from their history are doomed to repeat it, "but I'm sure that everything will work out fine this time!" (/s, though genuinely would be true if interpreted as a statement of hope rather than certainty as it says)

  • The problem with standups
  • No blockers yet (but the road ahead is concerning:-P)...

  • Biden introduces Zelenskiy as ‘President Putin’ at Nato summit
  • (1) the election isn't for SEVERAL months from now, right now we cannot vote for anyone at all.

    (2) part of the problem or not, it is a plain fact that many people won't vote for Biden. Some of those likely will vote for Trump no matter what, while others may vote for someone else who is younger. The more Biden declines between now vs. the next few months, the more people will fall into this category. Especially if the worst should come to pass and he dies.

    (3) the SCOTUS ruling is already in the past - we are already no longer a democracy, whatever name we use to describe the situation. Henceforth we have elected kings that are no longer bound by the collective Will of the People (after being elected), while Congress sells itself to the highest bidder in our plutocracy, thereby again ignoring the Will of the People, and since the Supreme Court also ignores the Will of the People, the fiction that we are a "democracy" is wearing thinner by the hour.

But we cannot control others, only ourselves, which is why it is important to do the right thing and put our absolute best foot forward. If you think Biden is doing that, like if he just has a cold and he'll get over it soon (fingers crossed!) then great. Many others do not think that though, and again some subset of those will not vote for him, but who might otherwise vote for a Democratic candidate. Perhaps I'm wrong - we'll see.

  • Biden introduces Zelenskiy as ‘President Putin’ at Nato summit
  • Four years ago, his age was already a factor. We've had four years to build someone else up. Someone who is not even connected to the Gaza situation. Even as a backup option, just in case Biden were to have died, let's say already by now. Four years. Four summers, four winters, four springs, four falls.

The conservatives tried and failed miserably, with Desantis, and Nikki Haley, etc. but the liberals... I don't recall even so much as trying?

But we could - AOC, Buttigieg, Newsom - there are many to choose from (edit: we could even let them compete - a "debate" if you will - and then pick the best one!). Instead, it looks an awful lot like we are choosing either Trump, or even if Biden barely pulled it off, the numbers would not be convincing to the election deniers.

Just like in 2016, except somehow doubled down even more so, we choose to stick our heads in the sand and hope for the best, while putting forth zero effort to try to bring about a less-worse outcome? FAAFO I guess, bc we gotta keep going through this same scenario over and over again, until we either learn, or democracy itself gets taken from us by the grown-ups (meaning those willing to expend effort towards reaching their goals, though not necessarily the good guys, and to be clear in this case they are very very evil ones).

  • Biden introduces Zelenskiy as ‘President Putin’ at Nato summit
  • And also the entire Hillary fiasco, where she barely campaigned in midwestern states. I wonder if they are truly so wealthy and disconnected as to literally not realize what is going on - for them, the economy is "fine" and so everything is hunky-dory, so if they plan on losing rather than put in someone that they don't feel that they have as much control over as Biden, then... that might be the end of democracy. Heck, that SCOTUS ruling is already in the past now - maybe they are ready to end the fiction that our votes matter any longer?

  • Biden introduces Zelenskiy as ‘President Putin’ at Nato summit
  • Did you see the debate? He stopped saying much of anything then, for really long periods of time...

  • Biden introduces Zelenskiy as ‘President Putin’ at Nato summit
  • TRUMP IS A...

Then it's a good thing he's decided not to run for President. Oh wait, he is running? Then we're screwed, if we rely on people voting for their best interests, just like in 2016, rather than just throwing their vote into the ring in order to watch the world burn.

Like it or not, some people aren't going to vote for Biden. We can acknowledge that now, or acknowledge it later. Btw, I really hope I'm wrong, especially since it looks like we're going with the latter.:-( I definitely was wrong in 2016, thinking that there was no way that Trump would win against Hillary.

  • *chef's kiss*.
  • "Want some of deez nuts?" :-P

  • That's much better.
  • Man or woman, we could only dream of having hair this fabulous!? 😻

  • Nice tile
  • Why would we assume this is a man? /s, and ignoring man vs. male-assigned-at-birth or whatever, just trying to make that joke about a woman with really hairy legs! 😂

  • The Code
  • Professors these days are extremely overworked - it's possible it simply got lost, plus it's not their business to provide a copy, especially for someone they think might be able to get one via their own means. Anyway you are right: it doesn't always work.:-)

The Hollow Men by T S Eliot

We are the hollow men We are the stuffed men Leaning together Headpiece filled with straw. Alas! Our dried voices, when We whisper together Are quiet and meaningless As wind in dry grass Or rats' feet over broken glass In our dry cellar

    Shape without form, shade without colour, Paralysed force, gesture without motion;

Those who have crossed With direct eyes, to death's other Kingdom Remember us-if at all-not as lost Violent souls, but only As the hollow men The stuffed men.

Eyes I dare not meet in dreams In death's dream kingdom These do not appear: There, the eyes are Sunlight on a broken column There, is a tree swinging And voices are In the wind's singing More distant and more solemn Than a fading star.

Let me be no nearer In death's dream kingdom Let me also wear Such deliberate disguises Rat's coat, crowskin, crossed staves In a field Behaving as the wind behaves No nearer-

Not that final meeting In the twilight kingdom

This is the dead land This is cactus land Here the stone images Are raised, here they receive The supplication of a dead man's hand Under the twinkle of a fading star.

Is it like this In death's other kingdom Waking alone At the hour when we are Trembling with tenderness Lips that would kiss Form prayers to broken stone.

The eyes are not here There are no eyes here In this valley of dying stars In this hollow valley This broken jaw of our lost kingdoms

In this last of meeting places We grope together And avoid speech Gathered on this beach of the tumid river

Sightless, unless The eyes reappear As the perpetual star Multifoliate rose Of death's twilight kingdom The hope only Of empty men.

Are you a 'tankie' - Lemmy

    !icon used on

Originally a light-hearted post poking fun at and doing a survey to gather input, but it has turned into a thought-provoking deeper dive into what it really means to be someone that people would call a "tankie". Note that to some (die-hard conservatives), we all are "tankies" on the Fediverse, but is there a meaning beyond the pejorative of merely "holding a belief that I do not personally agree with"? Come and join the fun, or read about the community consensus even long into the future?

Discussion about admins abusing Fediverse moderation tools (with proof) tankie censorship problem - Lemmy.World

I feel like we need to talk about Lemmy’s massive tankie censorship problem. A lot of popular lemmy communities are hosted on []. It’s been well known for a while that the admins/mods of that instance have, let’s say, rather extremist and onesided political views. In short, t..., like and, has consistently been accused of improper Federation practices and many instances have decided to ban one or both of the latter by default, with many individual users having already gone further to block the former as well. However, many individual users on seem unaware of the accusations of the practices of their admins, and some people go so far as to see as a sort of default instance on the Fediverse.

This discussion promotes wider knowledge of the situation and what might be done about it in the future, in order to e.g. not turn away new potential Federation members (Fedizens?:-) that could otherwise associate what happens on that instance as something relating to the Fediverse as a whole.

    Shining in the Darkness

Recently I have been thinking about Shining in the Darkness.

    !silly shopkeeper

I never played it when it first came out, but I love to go through series back to their OG titles and often that leads me to dungeon-crawlers:-) - Phantasy Star, Wizardry, etc. A lot of games I'll just hack so as to speed through them more quickly, but dungeon-crawlers I like the slow pacing & grinding - it helps calm my mind, especially like during seasons of the year when I may have trouble sleeping:-).

The UI is really crappy - like looking in the inventory doesn't even show which items are equipped or not - but probably for its time it was revolutionary, or something. Anyway it's functional and that's sufficient. Oh and the graphics are not on par with modern games, obviously. But it's old, so... who cares? :-P

What I like most about it is that tripartite balance between the three hardcoded characters. There is something about that... - like Kirk + Spock + McCoy in Star Trek - that somehow speaks to the human condition. In this case your main character does the deep cuts necessary to win the boss fights (even barehanded he does far more than the others when you get them, he's so strong!), and your mage support Pyra can really dish out the broad damage to a group (especially with the cursed whip, the only really worthwhile cursed item in the game for long-term use) or even all enemies, and your healer Milo splits the difference with his own magic spells + multi-targeting weapon. Milo can become your MVP with sufficient leveling and the Boost spell from Pyra - and he's so speedy that I'll give him the Sword of Light if Pyra's whip + that can kill things for zero MP at end-game.

Dragon Warrior/Quest had a similar concept - 3 hardcoded character slots, each with pre-defined names (not sure about the main one?) and back-stories for them; where the main guy was a straight warrior, then a Prince as a hybrid attacker+spellcaster, and finally a Princess offering more spells, though the latter two would swap as to whose was more powerful throughout the game iirc. Anyway, Shining in the Darkness may not have been unique, but they just did it so very well that it highly stands out in my mind in this aspect.

Shining in the Darkness also offered SUPER high resell value for items - something like half or even three-quarters of the value? So rather than my usual tactic of skipping over items to purchase so as to save gold overall, in this game I would intentionally slow myself down and buy every single one of the gear items, and thus experience gear that otherwise might never see any use at all in the game. I think it is more enjoyable that way.

I think I really enjoy the idea of a leveled-up Pyra being able to use her whip to great effect. She thereby breaks the trope of "oh I'm a weak wizard-man/woman and can only cast spells, maybe do nothing at all from the back row when I'm out of MP", and that adds a dimension to the game of deciding when to use a spell vs. using the whip to hold off on using your MP for as long as you can (despite MP-draining floors!:-P). Likewise using her cursed whip offers its own set of trade-offs: more power at first, for less control if the enemies did not die after the first turn - which if she was not a spell-caster would definitely not be worthwhile, but since the effect only happens after she chooses to use a physical attack, again offers up a whole new element of strategy to the game. Milo's multi-attack weapons have similar trade-offs - if he's a high level and Boost + Slow are/or used, it becomes REALLY powerful, plus being able to hit+kill up to 3 enemies in normal mobs also helps a great deal - and too the use of a "shield" that boosts attack power at the cost of defense.

Running contrary to that is the idea that while you may be able to mop the floor with all the common mobs, when you open up a chest and get a "boss" type monster, you have to be REALLY prepared! It is the maximum difficulty of an area that matters most, not the minimum or average. But even here... that facts leads you to behave more cautiously overall, which then ironically wraps around to encourage boldness in the short-term, as in go in and do a bunch, then get out and return, not try to limp along and then have your ass handed to you unexpectedly.

Perhaps I enjoy the reminder that while it is good to excel in life, it is also necessary to find balance, maybe with the support of others, or even just within ourselves:-). And this game was all about balance, in every aspect of it, which I very much appreciated.
