Happy Owl Family 2: Electric Boogaloo

This past year i have been in a government sponsered profession-rehabilitation program, that helped me get away from my previous profession and find a new one, one that is compatible with my health issues. I made a total of 6 owls for all the 6 different workers there, who helped and assisted me this whole time. Only 5 in the photo because one of the workers went on pension last week, so i gave him his owl earlier!

Im extremely grateful for their help and hope to stay in their memory by gifting them these handmade presents. gonna gift them this friday, on my last day, i cant wait!!! (also im starting the re-education for my new future profession next monday (geotechnician/surveyor), cant wait!!)

How are lemmy and other fediverse platforms profitable?
  • i hope lemmy.world doesnt become too big for its own good and becomes to big to upkeep

  • Most recent FO.
  • woah thats huuge, how long did that take you? It looks awesome and comfy!

  • Amigurumi!
  • oh my god these are beautiful!!! extremely well made, perfect tension and execution 😍 My mother used to collect bunnies that had that exact same head shape, really cool!

  • What do you like to use as background noise when you crochet?
  • i indulge in 2-3 hobbies at any given moment, cycling thru all over the span of a year. Right now its crochet, fishing and kayaking, a few months ago it was skateboarding and 3d modelling. Nowadays i put on a relaxing kayak fishing video while i crochet, or an educational video about some new lure or jig i wanna learn more about

  • What are you working on?
  • ive been in a state sponsored work rehabilitation program for the past year, and its the last two weeks so im last minute crocheting some farewell gifts for the people working there, who helped and supervised me there. 5 little amigurumis is what the plan is. almsot finished one, two and a half others are 70% done too.

When im done with this, im going to make a miniature electronic tachymeter for a man who taught me a lot while i was doing a two month internship at a surveying company.

After that i really wanna make one of those big mandala looking rugs with tons of varied borderings, and maybe hang it on my wall! I give away 95% of my projects, so it will be nice to finally make something for myself!

  • A happy Owl family!
  • i individually packaged them so you couldn't tell the size, them gave them out randomly! πŸ˜… i wouldnt have finished in time if i made them all big haha. But it just so happened that the kids got the small ones, so it looked like i did it on purpose!

  • pattern from this YouTube video: https://youtu.be/TERZHJeMjIk

to not have to skip back and forth, i made a text only version of the pattern in the YouTube comments, here it is:

US terms, crochet in Spiral Rounds, mark the first stich of your round with stitch marker or piece of yarn, number of stitches at the end of round is written in parentheses. Do inv-sc2tog to decrease like shown in the video, looks better with amigurumi.

    Body: R1: 6 ch into Magic Ring (6) R2: 6 inc (12) R3: (inc, 1 sc)x6 (18) R4: (inc, 2 sc)x6 (24) R5: (inc, 3 sc)x6 (30) R6: (inc, 4 sc)x6 (36) R7: (inc, 5 sc)x6 (42) R8: (inc, 6 sc)x6 (48)

    R9-22: 48 sc (48)

    R23: (dec, 6 sc)x6 (42) R24: (dec, 5 sc)x6 (36) R25: (dec, 4 sc)x6 (30) R26: (inc, 4 sc)x6, cut off the yarn, leaving a 20cm long tail. You will use this tail to weave together the top of the head later on. (30)

Set the Body aside and make the eyes by making flat circles. Either use Eye pins for pupils, alternatively you can start off by making the first few rounds using black yarn, then switch to white to make the rest of the eye.

Eyes: R1: 6 ch into Magic Ring (6) R2: 6 inc (12) R3: (inc, 1 sc)x6 (18) R4: (inc, 2 sc)x6, sl st into next stitch, fasten off leaving a 20cm tail. You will use this tail to attach the eyes onto the body.

Make two eyes, attach them to the body with pins or stitch markers until it looks right, then use the tail of the eyes to attach them onto the body, going through the last round of the eyes and into the body.

Nose: Use orange yarn and yarn needle to make a V shaped nose underneath the eyes, go back and forth multiple times to give the desired width of the nose.

Body Details: use white yarn to make little V's in two rows where the stomach of the owl is. Two rows, top row 4 V's, bottom row 3 's center alligned to give a little bit of a texture for the Owl-tummy

Closing off the body of the owl at the top: Lay the owl flat on the table, and press together the open part of the body, the owl face facing you. Using a yarn needle, weave through the stitches of the last round of the owl body, going through two stitches every times, making a straight line to the other side. as shown in the video.

Wings: make two flat circles 4 rounds big in the body colour, pinch the top part of the circles together and attach them onto the body as shown in the video.

Ear details: cut two 15cm long stands of white yarn, put them together and attach them to the ends of the last round of the owl body as shown in the video. cut the attached white yarn to desired length.

Let's build a community for all who are interested in crochet. Why don't we start with a little conversation on how everyone got into the craft?
  • ive been a proud hooker for about 3 or 4 years now i think. I am a person of hobbies. Hobbies are literally my life. without hobbies, life isnt worth living imo. I am curious about almost everything, and sometimes this obsessive phase of exploring a new hobby is triggered within me. One day, knitting got me really curious, so i tried it. managed to get the basics, made a scarf and some rectangles, but was irked by the fact that you cant knit as freely as i wanted, it was always row for row...and fixing mistakes was sooo hard!

then i somehow stumbled upon crochet, and instantly fell in love.being able to crochet in any direction, change colours on the fly...freestyle to my hearts content, it was GLORIOUS. I am a really slow learner though, and it took me foreeeever to 'get' how to crochet. i thought i would never be able to craft amigurumi, my favourite discipline within crochet. Counting stitches sounded too tedious!! i stayed with rectangular pieces for a while, basic granny swuares ( made a granny square with a 1.5meter diameter for my mum for xmas), then studied how to crochet in the round, figuring out stich markers and whatnot.

Nowadays i can proudly say im an advanced level crocheter, and my favourite thing to do is amigurumi! i can freestyle but prefer to follow patterns, and my craziest project was a 40cm big doll for my mums 52nd birthday, with a copper wire skeleton inside to make it posable and everything! The pattern is from CAROcreated on etsy, and instead of a cello i made a violin, since my mum used to play the violin in music school!!

  • BEHOLD! My first ever granny square!
  • wow thats so pretty!! and the colour is really nice, highlights the pattern you chose!!! you should be proud! My thumb rule is choosing lighter colours to highlight the stitches, and dark colours to highlight the geometry/silhouette. you did an awesome job!

  • POLL - Will you stay on lemmy?
  • Time will tell

  • cutting pizza in a way to avoid cutting peperoni
  • lmao my family and i do both of those things

  • How the beehaw defederation affects us
  • i deleted my beehaw account and registered here as soon as i read about the defederation. They're trying to police the beehaw community way too much, bunch of softies imo..
