How Kamala Harris Took Command of the Democratic Party in 48 Hours
  • I mean, when the calls initially started for Biden to resign, she probably had a plan in place. Hell, back when Biden mentioned that he may be a one-term president years back, Harris probably had a plan in place to ramp things up. It's just that this plan got used a little sooner than others expected.

  • What would you like to change about Lemmy culture?
  • Simply, stop being dicks to each other. Politically motivated or not, a lot of people are just straight up cunts when someone says something that they don't disagree with.

I can forgive the political extremism, and being heavily biased towards Linux, but you don't need to insult anyone that's to the right of Bernie, or someone that uses Windows and is happy.

Lemmy is small enough that it cannot afford to alienate people, or afford to have a superiority complex over the likes of Reddit or Twitter. The best advert is to be a welcoming community.

  • YouTube tests server-side ads to make your coveted blocker obsolete
  • I don't think that's an unfair thing to say at all.

I want to pay for Premium, but a mixture of oppressive tactics, poor payouts for YouTubers, and constant price hikes has made me reconsider. I watch YouTube more than most streaming providers, and that list continues to shrink because the cost has outpaced the value. A few years ago I couldn't imagine not watching Netflix, but now...eh, cancel it.

  • Manchester Airport: Police filmed stamping and kicking man's head
  • Afraid that I have to agree. It's nowhere near as extreme an example, there was a case brought against the West Midlands Police a few years ago where the cops intimidated a bunch of fans from Bristol, detained them, and forced them back on the train to Bristol. It took four years to settle the case, and the only way they were able to be taken seriously at all was because a serving policeman in Bristol felt inclined to back them, despite warnings not to do so by his peers.

It's the classic "who polices the police" scenario, and sadly the charges are often so painfully low that it feels like the best way to commit a crime and get away with it is to join the police...

  • Joe Rogan says he won't visit Canada due to Justin Trudeau's 'ridiculous free speech laws'
  • I don't really get the point of Joe Rogan any more.

As a comedian, he's okay? He's probably no better than over a dozen other comics, and his appeal seems to be limited to a certain demographic nowadays.

As a commentator on MMA, many in combat sports doubt his ability to commentate compared to other, more experienced analysts. Some of his takes are outright biased or bizarre, and while he'd undoubtedly kick most people's ass, he's apparently not that active in grappling any more due to injuries.

That leaves the podcast...which probably has a lifespan that won't outlast his other grifts. Once the comedy work dries up, the MAGA love-in is gone, and he stops working for UFC I don't really see what's left to prop his name up.

  • Lemmings of Lemmy who came over from Reddit what do you miss about Reddit and what do you not miss?
  • I don't disagree with your message, but this isn't about being politically motivated against a platform. Many people are, but most people on most platforms don't purely occupy both extremes of the spectrum. It is not a problem with the platform, but with the users that make the platform divisive for those that wish to interact with it. This isn't a problem with Reddit, and as someone that spent 15ish years posting on Reddit I can safely say I experienced less vitriol there than on Lemmy.

That may be partly due to there being less hate or divisiveness on niche subs, but the point remains that if people can't be civil it acts as a negative for Lemmy as a userbase.

  • Jeff's magic money machine
  • I would've thought that this could be quite simple.

    • A few flights in a private jet, or long-term purchasing for the whole month to take you wherever you want.
    • Several $250k-500k cars in each location to take you wherever you want
    • A private show from a famous band can set you back a few million. Do this each day.
    • Go to Vegas and get in a pissing content with some rich cunt where you send expensive drinks to each others table, until one folds. That'll be a few million each night.
    • Trump spent a ton on sex, so high class hookers?
    • A few ads across multiple providers to promote something
    • Prize fights can be set up quickly, and have the best in combat sports ready in 30 days. Offer $1m per division for the winner, and do it across maybe 4-5 sports, pay for TV and streaming, set up a venue, and you'll probably blow through it all.
  • "GitHub" Is Starting to Feel Like Legacy Software
  • While I agree with the body of the post, the title is just utter bullshit in this context.

With that being said, GitHub is a prime example of Rails in action, warts and all. To many that use Rails it probably is erring towards legacy given some of the technical decisions made regarding frontend within Rails. Rails is one of those rare stacks where it isn't uncommon to see the likes of jQuery powering parts of UI, and parts of the Rails stack trying to make quasi-SPA's. Personal thoughts aside as a former Rails developer, it's long been said that GitHub and Rails have probably been too heavily intertwined.

I can understand why they're moving to React, but the gripe seems mostly with server-side rendering - which you can do within Rails. This just feels more like a feedback piece for a specific area of functionality over saying that GitHub is legacy.

  • There's European countries who can have several different prime ministers in the span of three months
  • It's not the time that's the issue. It's the eye-watering sums of money you cunts donate to let a politician run a campaign.

What the fuck does someone need $450m for?! Use that to provide support for the homeless, feed the poor, and protect children that need a stable home. You could do so much with that money.

  • Tough choice
  • It has seamless integration with the language and framework, and to date (outside of TypeScript support in vscode) I'm yet to use anything that comes close to the level of control in debugging. IntelliJ shits the bed at even basic Gradle builds.
