    I've heard some stories where managers had to lay off most of their team, then put the remaining on performance plans, and then when those people were fired, they had no directs and then had to convert to a IC role they were woefully unable to do, transfer (lol good luck), or leave.

  • My understanding is that while you're 100% being terminated (and are ineligible for rehire) what you sign indicates that you're actually volunteering to resign.

  • For many, it's the severance offered that makes them sign. If you're about to lose your job, a few months pay, and free relocation back home if your visa is due to be cancelled is likely enough to make you sign something.

    I'm not condoning it, at all. I think the practice is fucking disgusting, and have seen it wreck lives, but it's a reality in many tech companies, including Google under Sundar.

  • I think that Amazon and Meta (where this is a known practice) do both. I've not signed anything in tech that stops me talking about internal company practices or any work that might have resulted in "voluntary" dismissal, but others in these companies that do the Jack Walsh thing and fire their employees do...

    Obviously, when you start laying people off, or do stupid shit like stack ranking, some people are going to walk out and just blab about all the dumb shit your employer does/did - and they're heroes for doing so.

  • I work in AI.

    We've known this about LLM's for many years. One of the reasons they weren't widely used was due to hallucinations, where they'll be coerced into saying something confidently incorrect. OpenAI created a great set of tools that showed true utility for LLM's, and people were able to largely accept that even if it's wrong, it's good for basic tasks like writing a doc outline or filling in boilerplate in scripts.

    Sadly, grifters have decided that LLM's were the future, and they've put them into applications where they have no more benefit than other, compositional models. While they're great at orchestration, they're just not suited to search, answering broad questions with limited knowledge, or voice-based search - all areas they'll be launched in. This doesn't even scratch the surface of a LLM being used for critical subjects that require knowledge of health or the law, because those companies that decided that AI will build software for them, or run HR departments are going to be totally fucked when a big mistake happens.

    It's an arms race that no one wants, and one that arguably hasn't created anything worthwhile yet, outside of a wildly expensive tool that will save you some time. What's even sadder is that I bet you could go to any of these big tech companies and ask IC's if this is a good use of their time and they'll say no. Tens of thousands of jobs were lost, and many worthwhile projects were scrapped so some billionaire cunts could enter an AI pissing contest.

  • That's not fair. The switch is a great console for indie games.

    Obviously, so is the Steam Deck, but that doesn't discount the Switch for having a solid library of games outside of the usual Nintendo shite.

  • Given that this was the prime time for Bonzi Buddy, I'm inclined to say I agree with you. People chose these things years ago, because it added more to the experience outside of "here is your word processor, here is notepad, here are the three games you have to play".

  • There is a term for this, but I can't remember what it is.

    It's a phenomenon where a person goes through their formative years in a given structure, where you are raised by your parents, go to school, and are given set goals for every year - do X and you'll get to Y. This goes all the way up to your early twenties if you go to university, possibly longer if you join a structured company with similar guardrails, or much longer when you join the armed forces and live in a regimented way.

    Once people leave these guardrails, some really struggle with the freedom they are granted. No one has a goal to point you towards, no one cares if you fail, and ultimately your life has a degree of freedom you haven't experienced ever.

    One thing we're terrible at as a society is either guiding people with no clear path, or supporting those that don't want a clear path and want to find one of their own. Some people really struggle with this, and the freedom of being able to do shit like overindulge on drugs/alcohol/food with no support or community support can ruin lives.

  • This is an unpopular opinion, but vote for who you believe in. If there is a party or candidate that backs your beliefs then you should vote for them. You only need to look at UKIP/Brexit/Reform to see that a small party can have a big impact, even if it's backed by the media and run by bellends.

    Wanting your vote to count by voting for a big party is like supporting Man City because you want your support to count...

  • A good macaroni cheese is built from a roux, and uses several cheeses to get that flavour.

    With that being said, I don't get why Americans lose cheese so much. It's fine, I guess? I would much prefer most other pasta sauces over cheese, because cheese alone is just a bit bland.

  • If I were Microsoft, I would consider speaking to Sony or Nintendo about running the live aspect of their console. Both have had serious issues with their services, and it's where the money is for a software company like Microsoft - especially with the better hardware people from Microsoft going elsewhere.

    Get Sega back into the console game, and we might see some more innovation.

  • While I don't support shoplifting, it's literally not inconveniencing anyone involved here. Worst-case, security calls the police, and they claim losses from insurance.

    That man will probably press charges, and get some money he probably needs, assuming he's okay. Those involved will almost certainly lose their jobs, and will probably end up in the position that this other person was in - unemployable.

    I really don't get what their end goal was here, other than to beat the shit out of someone.
