Well, I added "The Lou" for two reasons - 1) Some other person had started up a /c/saintlouis community (and let it dwindle) and I wanted this one to visibly stand out from that one in search results, and 2) I also started /c/missouri and named it "Missouri | The Show-Me State", so I wanted a nick name to go along with this one as well. I haven't heard anyone call it "St. Louie" in a hot minute, so I went with a newer one.

What do you think of using "Gateway to the West"? That's probably the most tried and true city nickname I know of.
For the record, I'm not commenting on this only because I'm not going to doxx myself. 😉
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF ST LOUIS-ISM COMPLETE. LET US NOW EAT GOOEY BUTTER CAKE AND PORK STEAKS AND TOASTED RAVIOLIS.
Sam Page, still looking out for the well being of people in STL. I didn't know much about him before COVID and how he dealt with all of the anti-mask / antivax assholes, but every time I hear about something he's done it's been good for the community.
Also, obligatory: fuck christo-fascists.
You can pick it up at three different locations or it can be mailed right to your door
> But now there's another option for emergency contraception if you want to get it for free or without an appointment. Missouri Family Health Council and the St. Louis County Department of Health have stepped up to help get free emergency contraceptive kits to you in person and in the mail.
> “In March, I signed an executive order committing St. Louis County to the reproductive and sexual health services it currently provides while working to expand services in an equitable way to address health and racial disparities,” County Executive Dr. Sam Page said. “Making emergency contraception free and accessible is a responsible public health decision. Thank you to the Missouri Family Health Council for making this possible.”
I think Denethor had more regard for Faramir than most Tolkien fans have for The Hobbit movies. I know the only way I'll watch them anymore is the fan edit 4-hour cut that removes all the crap that wasn't in the book.
I guess if it does we can call Des Peres "The City of NIMBYs".
I thought this was newsworthy mostly because someone used the sentence "Just say no to drugs." unironically and as a serious argument in favor of banning something in the year 2023.
Des Peres Aldermen voted Monday to ask local voters on Nov. 5, 2024, whether to ban recreational pot sales. But a dispensary about to open on Manchester Road will get
> Des Peres will be the first city in the region to ask residents whether they want to ban recreational marijuana businesses next year, even as the first and only pot store in the city of 9,100 residents nears its grand opening.
> Des Peres aldermen voted 5-0 Monday to give voters the option on Nov. 5, 2024, the first date allowable by Missouri law. Alderman James Osherow was absent.
> The move was cheered by about 50 residents who have for months raised concerns over the dispensary’s proximity to a youth math tutoring center and that it could increase crime by becoming a target for burglaries.
> “Just say no to drugs,” said Kevin Quigley, who was among eight residents who spoke during nearly two hours of public comment Monday.
Looks like a good lineup this year. The Muny is definitely one of our city's best attractions.
Among its seven shows this summer, outdoor theater in Forest Park will present four Muny premieres: "Beautiful," "Sister Act," "Rent" and "Chess."
> With another summer comes another eclectic, enticing lineup of Muny musicals in Forest Park. The outdoor theater’s 105th season, featuring seven shows, kicks off with “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” and concludes with “Sister Act,” both Muny premieres.
You do what you will, don't let me stop you. I never called anyone an outsider, but I also wouldn't have the hubris to start an online community on a growing social platform about a city I recently moved to, then tell people repeatedly how I don't know anything about the city and otherwise contribute very little to that sub.
It's infuriating that we're letting these christo-fascists determine how the rest of us are allowed to live our lives. I wonder what it will take for us to reach that "Have you no sense of decency?" moment with them. But of course they don't, because that would require a conscience.
Now I know that we're at meme status when it comes to expired temp tags, but this seems a bit much. Where's the victim in that crime? Does it really warrant stealing someone's car from them? If the person couldn't afford the taxes in the first place, how do they expect them to afford to get it out of the impound and pay the taxes, when they can't drive to work? I suppose the answer is that they don't, and they just like ruining lives.
I wonder, will it change anything now that dealerships are required to collect taxes at time of sale? I guess that still won't affect personal sales.
Been doing alright so far. Haven't noticed any blips since late yesterday I believe.
The rule of law means nothing to christo-fascists. They'll stop at nothing to enforce their regressive views on the rest of us. Expect more attempts to stop the will of the people from reestablishing reproductive health rights in our state.

Local entrepreneur wraps up 'search fund' process with purchase of Chesterfield IT firm
> When Nick Akers set out to buy a business in late 2021, his search process had a 24-month timeline attached to it. He figured he wouldn’t need that much time, hearing that those in a similar situation typically are successful around the year and a half mark.
> “That’s exactly how mine panned out,” Akers said.
> Akers in May wrapped up his acquisition search, closing on a purchase of Chesterfield-based IT managed services provider STL Communications Inc. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Libraries, one of most valuable public resources. Shame that they're constantly under attack from the GOP fascists.
So, putting aside their chances against fascism bro Hawley for a minute, who do we like better for the Dem ticket? Bell or Kunce?

Too christo-fascist for any sane person, but not fascist enough for the MAGA movement. Too bad, Pence.
Really, who does he hope to win over? The people who built the gallows for him?
Because obviously no one knows better about healthcare than fascist Republican politicians. Doctors? Pssh.

I found that if the community you want to cross post to isn't showing up in your login server's search results, go to the Communities search (filter for All), and then use the full Lemmy community syntax to search for it - "[email protected]" (make sure to include the exclamation mark).
Your server will then go out and index it and it will pop up in the search results within a few minutes. You'll then also be able to cross post to it.
Missouri public libraries must certify that they have policies in place that put parents in charge of what their children read and see.

Some libraries are receiving lists of 100 or more books and challenges overall are increasing, Moeller said. > “Most of the items being included in these lists relate to identity, race or sexual orientation,” she said. “What we really seeing is the ones that relate to identity are being called ‘inappropriate.’”
Since 2017, Missouri districts have sought to suspend the licenses of 32 teachers who quit on short notice. Others face fines up to $10,000.

If you are looking for a place to watch the fireworks on the 4th of July, then give these locations a try. There are plenty of places in the St. Louis area that are having fireworks on America’s birthday.
Anyone have any spots to add to the list?
Within a half-mile radius in St. Louis, a dizzying array of historic and contemporary venues and organizations have created the most exciting emerging arts district in America.
"Forbes Contributor" (read: blogger) says STL is the "most exciting emerging arts district", then goes on to describe art & culture... that we've always historically had? 🤔
Just curious, why is the midwest.social profile icon missing MO and KS?
Just wondering why the "midwest" icon leaves off part of the midwest.

“We have to do something!” It was a statement among many emotional pleas 8th Ward Alderwoman Cara Spencer made to her fellow St. Louis Alderman on Thursday.
> It was the first time members of the Public Safety Committee got to hear and give comment on Spencer’s recent ordinance proposal, board bill 29. The bill aims to tackle the proliferation of guns in the city by requiring anyone who openly carries a gun in the city to have a permit or endorsement. > [...] > Spencer says in speaking with the city attorney, she feels confident this bill does not go against state laws so long as it is not infringing upon the rights of people to still own a gun without a permit. However, she plans to take out an existing part of the ordinance dealing with the confiscation of weapons if someone is found in violation of carrying openly without a permit. Instead, officers would temporarily remove the gun and safeguard it and have the opportunity to get it at a later time. > [...] > Other concerns raised by city leaders include whether this ordinance will disproportionally target communities of color, and if it would put officers in even more danger approaching those who are openly carrying a weapon.

St. Louis County Public Health Dept. distributing free contraception kits
> The St. Louis County Department of Public Health is distributing free emergency contraception by request at its three permanent health centers. >The emergency contraception kits contain Plan B (levonorgestrel), which can be used by women to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or after other birth control methods fail.
While the bill was promoted as a way to enhance safety, critics contended it would have made life worse for people with disabilities.
Page still out there doing the right thing by STL county.
