Build Systems, Not Heroes
  • This is my mantra. Maintainability is king. I can't convince anyone designing our systems that this is more important than fancy 3rd party libraries that add some capability that only a couple of people will ever understand how to use, but will find it's way throughout the codebase and be a thorn in the side of bug fixes and new features for years.

  • What's the worst comic cover you've seen?
  • About 20 years ago, there was a website devoted to Batman covers demonstrating that he was a jerk. I printed a bunch of them and hung them up at work. Boy, I wish that website hadn't disappeared. It was great fun.

  • Why is UI design backsliding?
  • I've sort of been forced over to Mac (not that it's a bad thing, just a thing), and Paint.NET is perhaps my biggest loss in that transition. I've loved that program since its early days, and is always one of my first installs on any new Windows installation.

  • Harris soars to record 6-point lead over Trump in post-debate poll
  • It's a sad commentary on our society. It isn't nearly as healthy as I mistakenly thought it was 10 years ago -- clearly I overestimated how well things were going. That this many would throw away The Great Experiment just boggles the mind.

  • Ohio sheriff suggests residents keep a list of homes with Harris yard signs
  • I'm a paranoid sort. If I paraded a quarter of the signs, flags, offensive bumper stickers, et. al., of some of my neighbors in my red state, I would just expect that my property would be vandalized, my family threatened, my life endangered. I'm intentionally avoiding showing up on any "lists" that might be composed regarding people from different tribes. It's not right that this is a problem, but it is reality.

  • Ursula LeGuin puts the publishers in their place
  • Cannot recommend? Or cannot recommend enough? I don't want to put words in your mouth, but that's exactly the sort of brain typo that I would make, giving my audience exactly the opposite claim to what I'd intended, and based on context, I think the latter is what you were going for?

I've heard of Earthsea, but had no idea what it was about. Now I may need to pick it up. I rather enjoyed a more recent story with a similar plot, written by an author with, shall we say, less progressive opinions.

  • Blame It on the Rain by Milli Vanilli (rain)

Blame it on the rain yeah yeah (Yet another rain connection)

    The Train and The Moon

Considering this was a spur of the moment snap from the car, and with my phone, I'm happy how it turned out.
