  • We have a new technology that is extremely impressive and is getting better very quickly. It was the fastest growing product ever. So in this case you cannot dismiss the technology because it doesn't understand trick questions yet.

  • Lincoln would be rolling in his grave to see the modern GOP
  • No no no you see it's more complicated. No, I can't explain it. I don't fully understand, myself. I can't personally defend the Confederacy but I identify with them strongly and questioning them makes me angry. Instead I'm going to attack you, Joe Biden, communists, and BLM in order to derail the conversation.

But also it's not really sarcasm it's more like satire because I truly feel like some Republicans think this way.

  • They were protecting their way of life!

They were defending against northern aggression!

While the north died to free black human beings

    They had economic anxiety!

  • The inflation is caused by a conglomeration of things, and mostly not from us giving out stimulus. Trump is a clown but he didn't cause the inflation.

The inflation is supply side. That means it's caused by reduced stuff, not increased money. The Russian war caused oil to skyrocket and that caused a significant amount of the inflation.

  • Newt may have been the last but that's his own fault. He oversaw the GOP as it shifted from everyday "shitty conservatives" to insurrectionist nationalists.

I just want to make sure I get that off my chest. Newt heavily contributed to starting this. He's the original McConnell. He wrote the playbook.

  • Why does this community, which is privacy oriented, use Discord rather than Matrix?
  • Crypto enthusiasts don't really care or understand decentralization. If you talk to crypto bros you will realize pretty quickly that a lot of them are very very low IQ morons.

I was at an event and met a crypto bro. He tried to explain to a group of us that btc is like moss and the world is the forest. A couple people legitimately "got it" and began to get excited about crypto.

  • For better or worse it is unrealistic to expect business to just eat rising costs just because they got into business before the costs were so high. That would be nice but it's just not how the world works. If that were true then entire economies would collapse every time there was an economic shock.

  • Random daily meme n°6
  • That's a very interesting idea.

Quick question, you say 80% of the carbon is stored in the root and that you can harvest hemp 4 times a year. Do you harvest the roots when you harvest it? Or are you only harvesting 20% of the total captured carbon on each harvest?

  • Get out of here with your reasoning. It's more fun to feign outrage because it gives me an opportunity to feel smart. If you start to invalidate my superiority by pointing out how arbitrary and dramatic my response is then I'm going to downvote you.

  • A Universal Basic Income Is Being Considered by Canada's Government
  • Yeah I would love to see them do it. I mean hopefully it works and we can use it as a reference. If it fails, well that's their program.

Unfortunately they will bungle this shit the same way the fucked up their healthcare and it will just be a disaster.

  • If and when do you tell friends?

I have a few friends in my life who have seen me manic, depressed, etc over the years. At this point we've largely fallen out of touch and I'm better handling my illness but I still want to tell them. I'm not sure why, maybe just to spread awareness I suppose.

    Really interesting climate data

berkeleyearth.org June 2023 Temperature Update - Berkeley Earth

June 2023 was the warmest June since record-keeping began in 1850. El Niño is strengthening, and 2023 is likely to become a record warm year.

Found this on hacker news and wanted to post it here. It's fascinating to see how quickly the Earth is heating and just how anomalous the temperature is this year.

The new law is madness. If this happened in the US people would riot, and rightfully so in my opinion.

Understanding War | Russian Offensive July 8th, 2023, Day 500

understandingwar.org Institute for the Study of War

Five hundred days ago Russia launched an unprovoked war of conquest against Ukraine. The Russian military intended to take Kyiv within three days but failed to accomplish any of its intended objectives in Ukraine. Determined and skillful Ukrainian

I rarely read this sort of thing. It's honestly just very dense and I can't motivate myself to read it every day. That said, with the new cluster bombs getting shipped to Ukraine and some Western pundits accusing the Counteroffensive of stagnation I kind of just wanted to know, "What the actual F is going on in Ukraine right now?"

    So my partial TLDR is:

    • It's very early in the counteroffensive to say who is "winning".
    • The source publication believes that the Ukrainian Army is focusing on inflicting disproportionate casualties onto the Russian Military in lieu of focusing on taking back land as quickly as possible.
    • There's a lot of uncertainty inside the Russian political sphere and the upper echelons of the Ministry of Defense.

What are your thoughts on the Republican presidential candidates running against Trump? Do you think they have a shot?

I really think it seems like they're going to get destroyed. Trump still has a grip in the party, as evident by the number of people supporting in as he continues to go through legal woes.

I'm interested to see how Christy does. I don't think he's going to win but I do want to see him try to pick on Trump.
