Valve has a new Steam Chart for the most played Steam Deck games
  • I'm surprised by Helldiver's. Has there been some performance patches? I tried playing that on my deck near launch and it really struggled even at minimum settings - I can't imagine how it would run at higher difficulties.

  • Should I or should I not use a VLAN? I have trouble understanding the benefits for home use
  • Maybe I am not thinking of the access control capability of VLANs correctly (I am thinking in terms of port based iptables: port X has only incoming+established and no outgoing for example).

I think of it like this: grouping several physical switch ports together into a private network, effectively like each group of ports is it's own isolated switch. I assume there are routers which allows you to assign vlans to different Wi-Fi access points as well, so it doesn't need to be literally physical.

Obviously the benefits of vlans over something actually physical is that you can have as many as you like, and there are ways to trunk the data if one client needs access to multiple vlans at once.

In your setup, you may or may not benefit, organizationally. Obviously other commenters have pointed out some of the security benefits. If you were using vlans I think you'd have at a minimum a private and public vlan, separating out the items that don't need Internet access from the Internet at all. Your server would probably need access to both vlans in that scenario. But certainly as you say, you can probably accomplish a lot of this without vlans, if you can aggressively setup your firewall rules. The benefit of vlans is you would only really need to setup firewall rules on whatever vlan(s) have Internet access.

  • Cargo ship had engine maintenance in port before it collided with Baltimore bridge, officials say
  • So maybe you've heard something I haven't, according to this timeline, there was only 2-3 minutes between when the ship issued a mayday and the bridge collapsed: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/francis-scott-key-bridge-collapse-timeline-911-call-dali-cargo-ship-mayday-maps-construction-worker-recovery/

It sounded like there was 1 police officer already stationed on either end of the bridge, so thats the only reason they were even able to close the bridge before the collapse.

In the time it took them to do that, I can't see how there would have been time to warn them physically (it's like a 2 mile bridge). From the article, it sounded like there was confusion about if a crew was even on the bridge. I also don't know how often / what mechanism police can use to directly contact crews, if there even is one.

  • Where do you get your news?
  • NPR News Now publishes great little 5 minute podcast digests every hour or 2 summarizing the big news items of the day / hour.

Their politics podcast and Trump's Trials podcast are also good.

All three of these are very U.S. centric, obviously.

  • Markdown tests
  • So I know that will make it look correct in sync, but I guess what I'm getting at is that the comment is an example that looks right in other clients but NOT in sync.

Sync should show the list correctly like other clients do.

  • I love my Deck, but the multi user setup is terrible
  • This was my experience as well, though I did notice that many games did not properly isolate game saves from separate steam accounts.

Tip to any devs that might read this: organize saves based on the steam account logged in, not the user of the PC (always "deck" for the steam deck) and definitely not just a single location among the game's data.

  • Alaska Airlines Ad - SNL
  • IIRC Alaska Airlines knew the plane had issues and decided to keep flying it anyway.

So yes, it's Boeing's fault the plane's door blew off, but Alaska Airlines also deserves blame for continuing to fly a plane that was reporting issues with the door hatch.

  • What did you play for the first time this month?
  • I got a bunch of board games for Christmas, and so far I've gotten to play:

    • Jaipur - Nice little 2 player game about becoming the richest trader in the market - this one had very simple rules, and felt competitive without feeling too "mean" - both games we played were close. The "camel" system definitely keeps things interesting.
    • Hues and Cues - A very simple game - you are simply trying to give word clues to get people to guess the exact color on the board - my family definitely had some fun, but we also unanimously agreed to play it only to 25 points - the board goes to 100 which would absolutely overstay its welcome. There were also issues with indoor lighting / shadows causing colors to appear different to different people.
    • Coup - This one is a classic and I was so excited to play it - basically a bluffing / assassination game. My family didn't have too much trouble learning it, though we definitely did not play optimally. It'll be interesting to see how I feel about different player sizes - we played with the maximum player count (6), which for better and worse meant that in time you could pretty confidently learn what was in the entire draw pile. I'm definitely interested in picking up the "Reformation" expansion - I think the new card is really interesting, and the entire faction system could really shake things up for experienced groups - and it's cool that you can add one or the other or neither, and the game still works.
  • FYI for Rust Developers, lemmy_api_common is no longer published to crates.io (0.18.3 and above)

    github.com Dont publish releases to crates.io (fixes #3272) (#3664) · LemmyNet/lemmy@5cd4c6c

This is not needed anymore as from scratch installation now uses `git clone` instead of `cargo install`. https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy-docs/pull/241/files

    Dont publish releases to crates.io (fixes #3272) (#3664) · LemmyNet/lemmy@5cd4c6c

You will want to change your Cargo.toml to point to the Lemmy Github repository + either a specific tag or branch for the version you want to target.

    See the examples here: https://doc.rust-lang.org/cargo/reference/specifying-dependencies.html#specifying-dependencies-from-git-repositories

YSK there are options for backing up / migrating your Lemmy subscriptions, blocks, etc.

(Full disclosure: I made one of the tools)

LASIM - A little tool for migrating Lemmy settings / subscriptions / blocks between instances / accounts

See the linked page for information about how it works, limitations, etc. and I’ll of course answer any questions below!

Right now supports just Lemmy BE 0.18.1 (rc9, rc10, and final release).

When your instance defederates from another instance, their content can’t be pushed to you, but is there a way to stop your content from being pushed to them? (Answered: Misunderstanding)

    Or have I misunderstood?

I suspect the response will be that content on your instance should always be considered public, and that you can't really stop a bad actor from spinning up fake instances or scraping your site for the data regardless, but I just wanted to confirm.

Note: Supports 0.18.1-rc9+ - I have tested it with rc9, rc10, and the final release of 0.18.1.

    Question About Lemmy API Versions

I'm working on a little tool for Lemmy using the rust backend (lemmy_api_common crate 0.17.4).

I've tested it against some 0.17.4 instances with no issues, but yesterday I went to test it more thoroughly on the official testing instances and had JSON parsing issues. I realized later that these servers are currently running 0.18.X.

Is this a bug? Or are we expecting that even within the "v3" APIs that you'll have breaking changes between Lemmy versions?

Best Providers for hosting a Lemmy Instance?

Over the next week or so I'm sure a lot of people are going to try spinning up Lemmy instances - I've certainly been looking at it.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a VPS provider / resource allocation?

From what I have read, it sounds like you're going to want a host that focuses on storage / bandwidth (at least if you are allowing image upload), but maybe those of you already operating an instance have a different opinion?

Former Reddit Moderators, what kind of moderation tools do you think are missing from Lemmy?

This could be either site tools or popular Reddit bots that need to be ported over.

I think a big reason so many subs are going dark tomorrow is due in large part to how hard Reddit is about to make moderation - so it might make sense to make this an area of focus for Lemmy.
