Why does open source take up so much memory space on Macos

I have macbook air with M1 chip, I wish I could change to linux but unfortunately I cant so I try to stick as much as possible to using open source on macos. But i cant understand why FOSS apps take up so much space in memory. I'm even getting messages that says that I dont have space left in memory and i must close apps, and I thought that chip M1 was enough with 8gb of ram. I send a pic of my memory usage.

Where's the feel of the old Internet gone, and what sites do you use?
  • Hey, this is great. Thank you. I have actually just created a community here !oldweb if anyone is interested. Just a place to share these sorts of sites and lists etc.

    Just joined, thanks :)

  • Costa Rica - a community for users of the Central American country. Also hosted in a CR server!
  • El link ya no funciona, todavía existe esta comunidad?

  • Image editor or cool cam app?

Is there an apo to apply cool filters to images instagram like? Or any image editor which supports using images as stickers?

Is there a foss biometrics management app?
  • i cant find it

  • Is there a foss biometrics management app?

Using password managers and 2FA with passwords can be a slow and boring process, if you can unlock with fingerprint is much faster and frictionless, however I dont want my provider to know my fingerprints (samsung) is there a way to achieve this?

Which FOSS apps can be synced with Syncthing?
  • I used one called simple generic text editor available on f droid. However I just found out KDE connect works very well for sharing links and clipboard. It is even better and faster and works with almost all operating systems i guess. Would be nice to give it a try.

  • Calendar and tasks sync between devices
  • I tried almost every possible solution suggested here, but i couldnt manage to make it work, I'd really like a simple guide on how to set something like this or a self-hosting solution, though i dont even know if i can do that without a server

  • Calendar and tasks sync between devices

Ever since I started degoogling my life, i missed how to integrate calendar and tasks in all my devices. Because of my work Im stuck using Macos and I have a debloated samsung device with F-droid. However I need a way of syncing calendars and tasks between Macos and my phone, so I can get push notifications on both of my devices about events and pending tasks, I really need this as i often struggle with ADHD and the only way of getting my tasks done is being very structured with my apps notifying me with the tasks i need to do. Do you guys know what is the best way to implement this using FOSS software?

    Protestation
  • Calling everyone advocating for socialist revolution a man-child is a prejudice as you dont personally know more than 10 people defending that idea, whatever you say about "all people who defend the idea of revolution" is necessarily a prejudice. What I'm saying is even obvious, I can't believe I have to argue over it.

  • Protestation
  • Your comment evidenced some prejudices

  • Protestation
  • Risking nothing we will achieve nothing.

  • Which FOSS apps can be synced with Syncthing?
  • I use it on logseq, on aegis backups (2FA app), KeePassDX for my passwords, also I have a folder inside my picture galleries which is synced with my computer, so everytime I take a picture I want to save on my computer y just copy it there. Also I have plain text editor and I have a txt file shared with my computer I use it mainly to share web links between my devices. I'm still looking for ways to sync calendars and to do apps, so I can get notifications everywhere for my events so I dont forget them, but havent manage to do it just yet.

  • Is it possible to install microG on Samsung phone?
  • I guess thats the way that i have to take, thank you for your reply

  • Ugh. So frustrated with iClouds unreliable syncing across devices. I use [@logseq](https://lemmy.ml/c/logseq), but it relies on iCloud doing its job. Which it ain't.
  • Its a shame that syncthing doesnt support iOS because it is a great app, I didnt know about that. I use it even on MacOS

  • Ugh. So frustrated with iClouds unreliable syncing across devices. I use [@logseq](https://lemmy.ml/c/logseq), but it relies on iCloud doing its job. Which it ain't.
  • Syncthing is also free as in free beer but it will use your device storage instead of cloud based. Which is also good in terms of privacy but bad in terms of limited storage

  • Try syncthing instead its the best option for syncing across devices plus its open source. I use it to sync Logseq with my phone, working perfectly

  • A piracy utopia - the ultimate media sharing platform
  • Theres a lot of discussion here against centralization, but i wonder how possible it would be to maintain a federated infraestructure and build on top a mega meta search engine for centralization of resources

  • A piracy utopia - the ultimate media sharing platform
  • That would be amazing and even building a streaming app in too of it to compete with strraming services. Something similar to stremio for films and a music streaming service

  • Is it possible to install microG on Samsung phone?
  • Its a shame i didnt manage to find a single rom with support for my samsung a22 device. I wanted to use /e/Os or graphene, but none of them support my model :/

  • Is it possible to install microG on Samsung phone?
  • How? Id really like to know how to do it

  • Is it possible to install microG on Samsung phone?
  • I would but Im still not that tech savy so im afraid to brick my device

  • Is it possible to install microG on Samsung phone?
  • How did you do it?

  • Is it possible to install microG on Samsung phone?

I have a samsung A22 which is not supported by any of the foss roms i would like to try, so i started to debloat my phone and logout from google, removing as much propietary software as i can from my phone and replacing by foss alternatives. The only thintg i didnt manage to do is removing google services as i live in a country where foss options of maps apps doesnt work very well unfortunately so I have to stick with google maps. I tried Gmaps WV but it still needs google play services to work. I also added the micro G repository but I cant see the option to install it, is it possible?

    Is therean Graphene OS repo?

Its not a secret that grpahene OS amd other foss, privacy oriented roms dont support many devices letting a lot of people locked inside proprietary roms. Thats my case so i want to replace as much as I can the proprietary software on my samsung phone if possible for Graphene OS alternatives but i can't find their apps on F-droid unfortunately, so i wanted to ask if theres a repository for their apps, itwould be a shame if not, because i think it could help people to have more FOSS apps on their phones.

Is there a way to repurpose an Alexa device?

My girlfriend gave me an Alexa assistant as a gift with all good will, since she knows I like technology. I know in terms of privacy it is garbage, however I wonder if there is a safe way to use some functions of this device, perhaps without internet. Some way to hack it or something, do you guys know something about this?

privacy android rom for Samsung phone from Latin America

I live in Latin America and I found out here governements dont require Samsung to OEM lock bootloader for Samsung phones, so thecnically im able to boot a custom rom unto my phone. But Im curious if this still enables us Samsung users from Latin America to boot any privacy respecting android rom, since most of them doesnt support Samsung devices at least that's what they say on their web pages. So, do you guys think there's a solution for us?

FOSS options for low storage Apple sillicon?

I'm a music producer, so I'm stuck with Macos because of Logic Pro, which is used by my coworkers. There's no chance they change it for a FOSS option. I know Asahi linux is out there but my M1 computer only has like 250Gb (which isnt a problem for me because I store all my logic projects an external hard drive , but I guess if Asahi an option for me. I also tried running Fedora virtualized on UTM, which runs not bad. Do you guys think that its safe to use UTM Fedora as my daily driver, and for important things like university work and my dissertstion? Or is it worth trying dual boot Asahi even if I only have 250Gb storage?
