With all the upheaval at #reddit I've been looking for #teacher-related groups in the #lemmy / #kbin #fediverse. Two I've found are : @teaching and @australian\_teachers

Have you found any others?

Book Recommendations

I've been looking for a couple of books to read this summer to change up my practice. I'd love some recommendations.

Here's a few that I recommend from previous summers:

Here's what I'm reading so far this summer:

What are your favorite digital labs?

I really like digital labs they're no mess and it's really easy for students to make them up when they're absent.

Here's a few places that I get mine:

  • whscience.org - I especially like the Bug in the Meadow lab. Since I started using it, I haven't had to clean up bits of paper off my carpet. I also really like his Pedigree Tree Diagram Maker
  • PhET - Great simulations for students to try things out without blowing things up.

What are some other great ones?

Tips for Teaching Private Music Lessons
  • Absolutely! When a student finds the joy of music, they have become a musician.

I also look for what the student does well- what kind of musician are they? Some a great at reading sheet music, some are great at improvising, some are story tellers that see a song as a vehicle for their craft. Imo, it's best to treat the student as a genius. As Viktor Frankl said, "If we overestimate [our student], we can promote them to who they can be [...] If we take [our student] as they are, we make them worse, but if we take them as who they should be, we make them who they can be"

  • Anyone thinking about Gamification?
  • This book is great for gamification of the classroom: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0986155500

  • @cyberic there's actually another #edtech group on #lemmy.world that seems to have some interesting posts:

    @edtech

But you are right, in general, the level of activity on lemmy seems quite low. It will be interesting to see if it picks up as better clients become available.

  • Teaching has been the same in many ways for the past 100 years!
  • I don't have access to TikTok, but the following article challenges the traditional transmission model that is still quite prevalent today: https://educationrickshaw.com/2017/12/02/after-100-years-of-the-same-teaching-model-its-time-to-throw-out-the-playbook/

Students will certainly learn from each other. The question is, what will they learn? The transmission model is seductive because it allows the teacher to ensure that the content meets the the required learning outcomes laid out in the curriculum. Giving students more autonomy may work well for some, but there will also be a lot of cases where students will not engage with the desired content, and will instead find other things to entertain themselves. Keeping students on task is a constant challenge, but with the transmission model there is at least the illusion that students are taking in the required content.
