Proton.me adds self-custody Bitcoin wallet feature

cross-posted from: https://lemmy.ml/post/18390499

> For those of you using Proton services to protect your privacy, a new feature is being rolled out which is a self-custody Bitcoin wallet. If you have a proton e-mail address, you can now send and receive Bitcoin automatically. This is in tradition with their long-standing policy of accepting Bitcoin payments for their services. > > A few key points to know: > - You and only you have access to the Bitcoin, it is a self-custody wallet. You are not dependent on proton's cooperation to access your funds and they do not hold onto the funds for you. > - Proton automatically translates e-mail addresses to Bitcoin addresses. This means you can send/receive BTC to/from any Proton user by just knowing their e-mail address > - Proton does not support Bitcoin lightning. This means transactions will take an average of 10 minutes for an average fee of 75c. Hopefully they will add lightning in the future so that can drop to under a second for pennies in fees. Lightning would also enhance privacy > - Note that using Bitcoin is pseudonymous. Using it privately and anonymously requires some effort. > - Proton has also put together a good primer on Bitcoin here. > > from their blog post: > > Early in our journey, we experienced first-hand what it’s like being cut off from the financial system and at the mercy of large banks and institutions — an ordeal that affects millions of people across the globe. In the summer of 2014, as the original Proton Mail crowdfunding campaign was in progress, Proton had a near-death experience when PayPal froze our funds, questioned whether encryption was legal, and whether Proton had government approval to encrypt emails. > > Fortunately, in that instance PayPal returned the blocked funds, and Proton was able to start the journey that we’ve been on for the past decade. However, that dangerous moment has always stayed in our minds, and we still keep a proportion of Proton’s financial reserves in Bitcoin. > > Having experienced firsthand the unreliability of the traditional financial sector, building Proton Wallet is an important strategic move to make Proton more resilient and independent in the future. By enabling us and the entire Proton community to more easily adopt means of payment that deliver on the promise of financial freedom for all, we better insulate Proton from the risks posed by traditional finance.

Would be nice to get everyone into the same Bitcoin community

I stopped coming back to Lemmy 6 months ago after seeing there was not enough traction. Is there any good community for Bitcoin or just Crypto that is active with daily users?

The mod for this community (lemmy.ml) seems to have disappeared long ago (no posts, no comments, and I reached out to them many months ago and they have never got back to me)

The main mod for lemmy.world/c/bitcoin is just a squatter, who specifically mentioned to me that they are there to hand it over to the Reddit Bitcoin mods if they ever appear.

discuss.tchncs.de/c/bitcoin seems to have the most active mod, although I haven't checked the other bitcoin communities recently. I think it would be good to move activity over there, unless people think there is a better sub.

To date people have donated over $30 million to Ukraine with Bitcoin. Donations continue to come in regularly

> ! > > Most of these transactions took a few minutes and around $1 in fees. Bitcoin lightning is pennies in fees, but the account shown is on main chain. > > If you know somebody who wants to contribute to Ukraine but doesn't want to deal with the hassle, cost, or availability of international bank wires, this is a great way. Most major cities have several Bitcoin ATMs and in many countries you can buy Bitcoin online easily. > > Transaction list: > https://www.blockchain.com/explorer/addresses/btc/357a3So9CbsNfBBgFYACGvxxS6tMaDoa1P > > Proof this address is really owned by the Ukraine govt: > https://twitter.com/Ukraine/status/1497594592438497282

> This is a day created to make representatives more aware that their constituents care about crypto and want to assert their freedom to use it. Pro-crypto lobbying group is asking people to ask their reps to support the The Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act which pretty much everybody in crypto agrees is a good bill for removing legislative ambiguity around crypto.

Alternate Bitcoin community

This place is looking a bit dead. It seems like lemmy.world has the most active Bitcoin community, so we should probably consolidate our activity there:

So, how do I buy a cola?

I have spent a good amount of time gawking at Nostr and the posts going on there - with all the zapping and whatnot. Think they just hit a millionth zap or something?

Anyway. Whenever I hear people talk about crypto, I just walk away. Because so far, whenever I read an article about the usecases of Bitcoin or anyothercoin, it is filled with "[could] be used for". But "could" is not "can".

So, I would like to ask here: How do I buy a Cola with bitcoin?

Imagine that all I have is an Android phone, a few Euros in my bank and an absolute thirst - right now. What do I do to pay with Bitcoin to buy me that Cola?

(I know the described situation is a little extreme. Basically, I want to know the fastest, most "convenient" way it is done. Not could - but can.)

Video: Payment via Lightning network, from EUR, to BTC (on LN), to USD -- in seconds

This was a demonstration of using Bitcoin on Lightning Network ⚡ for a retail / Point of Sale (POS) transaction. This occurred during the Bitcoin 2021 conference in Miami last week.

The demonstration shows the "customer" scanning a QR code from the cashier's tablet, and paying the Lightning network (LN) invoice.

The customer didn't hold bitcoin. The wallet app (Lastbit) paid the LN invoice using the customer's bank debit card (on file with Lastbit).

The merchant in this instance was also using Lastbit, and in this case, the proceeds of the sale (bitcoin on Lightning network) are converted to dollars on arrival (which is an option available to the merchant).

The merchant doesn't need to use Lastbit. They could be using a self-hosted BTCPay Server, for instance, and never touch dollars. But to show how LN can work well for retail payments, the merchant in this instance is receiving payment in fiat -- which many merchants choose to do (for now, until their vendors, employees, etc. also accept bitcoin).

  • Yeah , thanks, good that it worked out so well for you. I put for the long term, but way less money (it was starting to get really interesting at the peak) I cashed out exactly the fiat money i put in.

maybe i'd like a credit card with the balance still kept in bitcoin and converted just in case. With my bitsa once you sent an amount, it's suddenly converted
