wait what is the genshin impact one doing
  • Let's see... Just today, in their presentation for the next patch, a child character got a new outfit, and a teaser that the next archon (god) is a kid - again. xD

I sometimes wonder wtf they're doing, ngl...

    arm64 image for 0.17.4 missing

I just wanted to update to the latest version, and noticed that there does not seem to be a tag for 0.17.4.

Any particular reason or should I use a specific tag in my docker-compose.yml instead?

    Thanks!

  • Best way to receive anonymous SMS? (germany)
  • Volla Phone, makers of some degoogled phones, actually asked for if people wanted that on Twitter a while back.

Dunno if they went through with it, though. Would also be interested in hiding my phone number; would allow me to come back to Whatsapp. I ain't giving Meta my number... xD

  • Me on my first day of lemmy
  • No, just the way the Fediverse works. :)

...and, to go on a bit of a tangent, how the internet "used to" work. You still see the remnant with E-Mails; they can go between servers. Most other services have become locked and centralized now. There was a short bit of time where MSN, AIM and YIM were practically compatible with one another due to sharing many of the same XMPP protos.

Personally I am happy to see this again, been too long ^^

  • Thoughts on Nostr?
  • Here's a brief: Instead of tweeting to one server, you tweet to many. When you and another person share the same server, they see you. Those servers (relays) can also be broadcasting your messages to other relays, so you might end up indirectly sharing servers as well. Because there are so many servers that potentially sync data, it is supposed to be "uncensorable". Each user is identified by a public key, and signs their message with a private key.

As for the SN aspect; you follow people. Hence the Twitter comparison.

Now what I did not mention on purpose: You can do microtransactions in bitcoins. And if you read that and thought "oh god no" - then yeah, exactly. xD

  • Thoughts on Nostr?
  • My biggest gripe with cryptobros is that they have built some actually good tech; like IPFS. But then they ruin it with their coins. Filecoin, seriously?... That said, the sheer protocol of Nostr is actually damn impressive. But man is it verbose (but not as stepp as I thought) to get into... Still, a social network is made and broken by its community. At present, Nostr is the latter.

  • So, how do I buy a cola?

I have spent a good amount of time gawking at Nostr and the posts going on there - with all the zapping and whatnot. Think they just hit a millionth zap or something?

Anyway. Whenever I hear people talk about crypto, I just walk away. Because so far, whenever I read an article about the usecases of Bitcoin or anyothercoin, it is filled with "[could] be used for". But "could" is not "can".

So, I would like to ask here: How do I buy a Cola with bitcoin?

Imagine that all I have is an Android phone, a few Euros in my bank and an absolute thirst - right now. What do I do to pay with Bitcoin to buy me that Cola?

(I know the described situation is a little extreme. Basically, I want to know the fastest, most "convenient" way it is done. Not could - but can.)

How has joining the furry fandom affected your life? Was it positive, negative, or did nothing of note change?
  • I joined the furry community somewhere in 2009 - the internet was a whole different world at the time. The idea of dynamically fetching content via JavaScript was still "being explored", in a way.

Initially, I landed on ychan/yiffy.tk and spent a great deal of time there and found many friends. I had landed there, because I was looking for something else, but found a Panty and Stockings rule34 picture and decided to dig down further into this "awkward, odd, but interesting thing".

To make a long story short: I am german, and my english was bad. Through roleplaying and interactions I learned how to speak and write english so much and drasticaly, that I improved by magnitudes and actually wrote the school's highest ranked final exam for graduation in my entire year. I also started to run my own community - those who remember who Karma was and what he did, might know what I mean - when the admin started to swing the ban hammer...aimlessly. xD

From there, I maintained the community all the way to 2015. Due to IRL circumstances, I had to let it go. But, it still lives on as a discord server.

In all that time, I have bought many commissions, done a boatload of roleplays, found people to pour my heart out to and find some friends that I have stuck with since. In fact, most of the core-members of the community I founded (Dragon's Inn) are still my friends!

So yeah, the fandom gave me a lot and I will be forever thankful, which is why I keep using my phoenix icon, although I haven't bought a commission in a while, let alone roleplayed... It just means too much to me. <3

  • What do you all use for password management?
  • Selfhosted Vaultwarden and the Bitwarden apps.

Gives me access to all my things basically any time and anywhere. Its pretty neat. And if I don't want it anymore, I can export the data and just nuke it - and it's gone. :)

  • Thoughts on Nostr?

The past few days, I have been heavily experimenting with Nostr as another alternative to centralized services. And, I am honestly impressed by just how good it is. The protocol is quite simple and works very fast.

However, the almost constant bugging of the integration with idontcarecoins is a little annoying. Easy to ignore, but still always there.

What do you think about Nostr? Have you tried it?

    Does Lemmy perform backlogging?

I just finished setting up my instance and so far, it works quite well. But I have noticed, whilst observing the logs, that activity trickles in rather slowly, although I have a very good uplink - my VPS is situated with Hetzner, and, as far as their marketing speak goes, I should have a rough 20gbit. I don't quite buy it, but it should be plenty fast for communicating. Also, 4-core arm64 box.

I saw that there are admin settings that can be done. Got any recommendations on how to improve my Lemmy's performance?

    Thanks a lot!

[solved] Subscribing to a community on a different instance is so annoying!
  • When I add [email protected] into my search field, it doesn't show anything - in fact, it ends up telling me that there are no results. I have to then go into the Communities tab again, and hope it shows up there.

I can see it doing work as I watch the logs. But this is really a little weird/frustrating. I hope this sees improvement eventually! =)
